  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

I'm pretty damn excited.

Lots of cool chatter this past month on how Komodo is planning to be used by various filmmakers. We're getting close, real close to launch.

Crash cam, A-Cam, B-Cam, Helmet Cam, etc.

Personally for me, perhaps Komodo's #1 biggest strength is it can be with me at all times. Totally going to exploit that concept.

Going to be our A cam and man are we going to put it to work. Gotta prepro a passionate project for the first shoot. What a time to be alive.

I was just thinking that this morning. Small set-ups, large set-ups, stereo set-ups, multicam set-ups, and so on.

If I were a scientist I'd buy one just because of its global shutter. That's very important if you're recording motions in a wave tank. You don't want to allow any skew whatsoever. I actually was asked by a scientist to transcode some footage from a wavetank - this was many years ago now. The footage was interlaced. Sad!

It will be such an amazing camera to have on you all the time and will make travel so much easier. Lightweight, high res and small form factor, ticks all the boxes for me.

This little camera might change my life for all my travel work. If I can leave the Movi Pro at home and trade it in for the Ronin-S for one specific client my grays might start reverting back to brown. It’s worth a shot.

Yes, literally always in my bag at that size, even without it being a shoot day. Just laptop and the Komodo.

Yeppers. Same feels. In my spare time I've been figuring out my ruck sack Komodo kit that will come with me. Chargers, media readers, etc.

There's another thing that should be mentioned. Jarred hasn't fully spilled the beans on all of Komodo's features yet. I'll be looking forward to that post or thingy on red.com when the time comes. There's a few things that sort of point in specific directions that are worth guessing at.

On another level, there's so much potential for Komodo in array setups. I'm not talking my normal stitched goodness, I'm talking similar to the work we did with Mova for The Incredible Hulk with live action footage generating 3D meshes. This can now be done in a much more compact and portable way as well as much higher quality. Komodo is the perfect size for that.

Oh yeah, eagerly awaiting all the specs.

Yep. Totally my intentions too. :)
(the thing is with the Covod-19 epidemic, loads of my works have been cancelled or delayed so I might not be able to jump on the Komodo train at launch T_T)

Been away from here for a while - so sorry if this has been asked or covered already but is there any footage with the final sensor yet? I saw a skateboard video that was supposedly shot on Komodo but it didn’t really look that great to be fair. So I’m guessing that was a half baked sensor? But now that it looks like the camera is about to ship to people I assume the sensor has to be finished, so wondering if there has been any links to clips with it on here? Can’t wait to see what lots of talented DP’s do with the finished product.

Nothing public yet.

All of the footage so far is with the production sensor, but the firmware and color science aren’t finished yet. Even if it was, highly compressed web video is worthless for judging much of anything about sophisticated cinema cameras. So far the Saturday Night Live clip of Brad Pitt playing Anthony Fauci is the best example. The Michael Bay Super Bowl commercial shows it intercuts seamlessly with other Reds and you really can’t tell with any certainty which cameras were used for which shots.
All of these are still beta test footage from production prototypes. The hardware is finished and locked at this point and sale of the limited production run Stormtroopers is imminent.
I’m sure there will be plenty of promotional footage showing off Komodo’s capabilities soon after Jarred and Graeme are satisfied with the sensor calibration and color science, along with posted R3D clips for us to play with. But rest assured it is going to be right in line with the DSMC 2 cameras for IQ since it is designed first and foremost as a companion camera for them.

Oh yeah, eagerly awaiting all the specs.

...e.g. if Komodo has a really good accelerometer built in for image stabilizing in post?

I'm also looking forward to all the accessories from RED and third party manufacturers.

JARRED: " in 2 weeks I’m gonna start selling some crazy colored Komodos to my friends and anyone else who wants to be a little “different” . Super limited low quantities. Will make just a handful per week till the stormtroopers are ready . Email me if your interested."

The real courageous choice would be to ask for a "super limited edition model" in black, right?

My New Zeiss Milvus Kit + SmallHD7 Touch are waiting for KOMODO :)

Get one with Hello Kitty styling. Everyone would remember that one until the end of time ;)
