  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Each of those has it's own features and limitations. Jarred said at one point that Komodo was developed as a companion camera to the DSMC line and he would consider it a success if it only sold to Red owners.
Most of us feel it will have much broader appeal. Price, frame rates and resolution are not the only important considerations for potential buyers.

I get that. However, the more flexibility you have overall is a better tool IMO.

Komodo is cheaper for other reasons. Not image quality.

I’m starting to wonder if this is the case? That skateboarding video was not exactly impressive IQ wise. I understand that this camera is still a work in progress, so I will reframe from any final judgments. But atm it’s looking a bit mediocre.

I think you are wiser than to take any Social Media highly compressed and lossy image quality at face value. On top of that, it was shared on Jarred's personal Instagram account, not as something intended to showcase IQ or for other marketing reasons.
I know this is a long thread (understatement of the year) so here's a quote from a part of Jarred's earlier post on the subject:
...
Remember, we all at RED have all been in lock down in California, our factory has been closed. So I gave a bunch of Komodos to my troops to go shoot with. I've been doing the same. It's great for testing, and it is even better for us all to not lose our minds.

Most of us have gotten so busy over the last few years with the "business" that actual shooting has become one of those things that always seems to get pushed down the to-do list. And you gotta remember most of us are shooters... so watching my team go out while we have been on this pause and shoot stuff again and seeing that creative spark light up in them has been one of the most gratifying things ever for me. Heck... I personally have shot more in the last 2 months than I have in the last 2 years. It has reminded me why we started all this in the first place.

So yeah.. I know you all want to pixel peep and see footage and trust me that stuff will all come like a storm when it's out and people get their hands on it. It's getting close. When that happens I am sure there will be a ton of people sharing full resolution R3D's sent around the world and back again for you all to dig into, and I am sure some of it will be awesome, and I am sure some of it will suck.

Try not to draw any hasty conclusions, even preliminary ones! :)

I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

I wonder why RED just can't make the camera API and open it for developers to create custom interfaces. make a couple of skins and let others do the work to satisfy different cameramen/dps needs. or maybe make an interface studio app to enable you to customize the camera UI easily the way you want, arrange it, design it, upload to camera. yeah, people have different priorities on how they wanna use their camera. we all used different cameras along our history. each had its own way to customize it or no way at all. This is the age of touch UI, with just few rendering happening underneath. the screen will unlikely change in the camera through its life, but whats on it can. and adapt. like we agree on assignable buttons are important, it could be the same for a custom UI. and here.. RED will be first to lead the idea in the Film industry increasing adopters.

PS: Sorry didn't read every word on the post, I hope its not redundant

$6,000 in black later

Could we ha some definite specs now ?

Hello Jared I’ve been eagerly waiting for Komodo like many others and would be super grateful to get one in a special color, unfortunately I do not have your email. I’ve been documenting the streets of New York City throughout the last month and a half and it would be amazing to get a Komodo to continue to document what’s going on in New York City in these crazy times. I would love the opportunity to get one in yves klein blue paint if possible. thank you so much

best David Grigorian

its happening !!!!!

6k for the Storm Trooper version, or for the final production version? What's the Hydrogen discount?

Apparently it's $7K for the Stormtrooper version, $6K for the production version, and the last I heard the Hydrogen discount was $1K.
