  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

KINEFINITY camera just landed lol

We'll see.

I don't know of anyone who owns one, or wants to own one.
I don't know of any production that's shot on one.
I don't know of any production that's wanted to shoot on one.

In the end, image quality is king. Something tells me the aggressive pricing is making up for a deficit in IQ (however small that me be). No disrespect to Kinefinity - it's a lot of features for the price point.

4 months ago I saw a chart of the different kinds of RAW (Redcode, BRAW, cDNG, etc) and what they could do. Redcode seemed to be about the only one that didn't bake stuff in, like white balance, etc. I don't even see the point at looking at other systems until they can match the flexibility of Redcode. Does anyone know where I might have seen that chart? Can those who've used more cameras and workflows more than me tell me of a RAW that is as or more flexible than Redcode? That is what I like about Komodo, Redcode in a package I can afford.

More flexible? Probably none, since everyone with a raw codec is trying to accomplish exactly the same thing that Red was trying to when developing a raw codec. The only one that might have anything baked in is ProResRaw, but that might just have been teething pains -- I haven't worked with it yet, so I don't really know.

Not baking anything into the footage is a hallmark or raw; even Black Magic raw with its partial de-Bayering doesn't bake white balance and ISO into it.

In the end though, there's a reason that codecs like Black Magic raw have the same sorts of workflow features that Redcode has, like the metadata support.

There's also a reason that several of the raw codecs appearing lately are using IP licensed from Red.

I've used Redcode, BRAW, Canon RAW Light and Cinema DNG RAW and, in my opinion at least, I think they all hold up similarly to grading at similar compression ratios. There may be some subtle differences, but those are pretty easily accounted for when grading. I don't believe white balance, ISO, gamma curve, or color space are baked into any of them. I'd say it's the color science and DR of the different cameras and available compression ratios differentiate how the footage grades more so than the RAW codecs themselves. Depending on your post-production software of choice and system configuration, there may be some differences in debayer and playback performance between different RAW codecs in post.

The irony in this picture is that Kinefinity is using Sony (Semicon) Sensors (as are Panasonic, some Blackmagic [Pocket 4K and probably 6K as well] and Z-Cam). Some even the exact same silicon the Mavo LF is using (Sony A7III, Nikon Z6 and Panasonic S1H are using the same).

Actually, depends on what Panasonic’s you’re talking about. VariCam’s(V35/Pure & LT) are Panasonic sensors.

Sorry I was talking about the GH5, GH5s and S1/S1H. The Lumix brand. ;) (but it wasn't explicit at all, my bad)

Another 88 days and we will celebrate 1 year anniversary of Komodo threads. Lets hope we will do it with real Camera in Red Store.

Talking of sharing sensors, I read somewhere that the Komodo sensor is a cut down version of that in the Canon R5?
Is that just typical internet nonsense?

It's technically possible for another manufacturer to use a Red sensor. But Red would never use a Canon sensor. They've been behind in sensor tech forever, at least as far as their stills cameras go. Of course anything can change. Mirrorless cameras will make DSLRs go extinct soon. That's progress!

I have no clue at all but as Karim said, RED usually have their own sensors. Maybe Canon is making them BUT I doubt it as it would be the kind of information that would have leaked a long time ago :p
And I know Canon is making their own.

Komodo Launch

Komodo Launch

I read on one of the post that Komodo might launch around Cinco de Mayo or at least sometime in May per 12-week timeline mentioned by Jarrad. I wonder if this will hold up?

Not just "usually", Red has never not used their own sensors. Red wouldn't use another manufacturer's sensor, Jarred has even said as much. This was brought up several months ago in this thread.

Yeah, definitely internet nonsense. Red's sensors are the reason it has gotten this far. Of all the things Red could use from a third party, that's not going to be one of them.

Pretty sure Red's sensors are still created by an outside vendor. There are a limited number of companies that actually focus on creating sensors. It would be really costly otherwise if Red did it. That goes for a great deal of of companies. That's why you see Panasonic, Fujifilm, Leica, Nikon, etc getting their sensors from Sony. They have a contract with an outside vendor, then tweak the results . Red might have a deal to keep their sensors proprietary though. Unlike the other companies, which buy that same 24 mp sensor from sony

Jarred already responded to this. Obviously this is a long ass thread with many topics going on so things get lost in the mix. Hopefully these posts give you a more definitive answer:

One
Our sensor team.. and yes, we have our own sensor team, created this sensor to solve a specific problem.

Two
We use someone else's oven like everyone else does, and we do jump around to different ovens as needed but it is our design.

I know there are conspiracy theories out there and crazy videos that try their best to claim we don't have a sensor team and jump and down screaming that we don't design our own pixels... which is completely false... and disrespectful to our team who have been designing some of the best sensors on the planet for more than a decade.

Nice, that was quick that you found those haha. Figured it was something to that extent regarding teams working together

Haha yeah I just remembered seeing it so I clicked a page in the middle somewhere and kept hitting the "Red Team" button until I found them. Also that's how you know there's not much going on haha.

Yeah I guess it seems akin to designing something out of metal and then going to use someone else's tools to make it. They still design it, very different than an OEM type situation. I think that's what Jarred was trying to get across anyway.

I would bet the sensor in the Komodo is exclusive to RED.
I also think the chances that the sensor in the newly announced Kinefinity Mavo EDGE and the Canon R5 are pretty high.
