  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

If it easily flips open it does not matter if it covers the whole top. Someone made a loupe for the 5" red touch before that was on a hinch which worked great just flip it to the side if using the touchscreen and flip back when using it as a view finder.

I had one that connected with magnets and it was great. It had a strap that I always kept around my neck when it was sunny, so I would remember to remove it when not in use to avoid burning the screen. But I do think it would be much better if the buttons were accessible - nice to look through the loupe while adjusting settings.

I like the optical viewing finder attachment. I've been using one with the sigma fp (from sigma) and actually it's quite nice to see a big bright image rather than the smaller EVFs.

On the UI side i would caution about too much going onto these screens. There's a lot of stuff that's just not front and centre. +/- Green Magenta. Vector scopes, parades - these are post tools. You're really wanting to see traffic lights and histogram and maybe shadow clipping as well.

What would be awesome would be having both the full image displayed and under that a zoom of an area. The screen is square, so why not make use of that - a magnified centre patch in addition to the full frame.

Once you've set ISO and shooting controls i don't need to see them all the time.

EDIT - i just mangled Roberts example to show what i mean... (with apologies but on my laptop with limited tools here)

cheers
Paul

Lets keep all UI related posts in that thread from now on...

Having a small display of the camera image on the top screen along with the UI is certainly useful. That said, using it as a viewfinder while operating is problematic to say the least. Fortunately, Komodo does not require (or even support) a RED touch screen that might be a budget issue. There are a plethora of low cost, small monitors to choose from these days, many with their own recording facility. Even with a loupe/magnifier, the location limits use cases.

I'd expect a lot of folks to rely on a smartphone as their primary monitor and control point. IIRC, when physically attached to the "cradle", the phone can display a fairly hi rez image. If so, I wonder if there will be a way to attach a short cable to the topside cradle to support a mountable cradle on the side or rear. No idea if the hardware can support anything like that and AFAIK the cradle is still in development. FWIW, if I was kitting out a Komodo I'd get a 7" monitor with good contrast, >600nits that can record the UHD/4K SDI signal to ProRes/DNx.

when are people going to make evf glasses you can wear?

Good points Blair. I'm sure a cabled option for monitors will be available. And when a monitor is attached, what happens on the touch screen? Would be great if we could set it to go black to save power, or just display settings, histogram, audio levels etc, or 1:1 for focus. While it's obviously way too small for any serious shooting, I do like the idea of pulling this camera out of a bag and grabbing a shot without rigging a monitor.

Zeiss had a head mounted display (HMD) on the market years ago, not sure if they have been updating that product. FWIW, if anyone is going to make an HMD for CamOps, I'd suggest the camera image only be sent to one eye so your other eye is free to keep track of the physical environment. Early in my career I trained myself to keep both eyes open when shooting with an EVF so I could anticipate where to be, where to have critical focus and when to start adjusting the framing based on the blocking, perspective, etc. (Side note: if I am at all concerned about a focus buzz, I just close my left eye to peer more carefully at the camera feed for a second.)

Thanks to the cell phone industry, much of the tech required to make a high quality, hi PPI, lightweight, power efficient HMD has become available at commodity level pricing. Moreover, there is plenty of engineering going on to create next generation HMDs for AR/MR/VR applications. Sure seems like a perfect time for someone to develop an HMD for imaging work. For starters, using an HMD with a phone camera would facilitate all kinds of interesting angles while maintaining a clear view of the frame...

Indeed. It's also great when trying to determine if an issue is confined to the monitor path or not.

Unless I missed something, external monitoring is via SDI cable only as of now. A cradle for smartphones is on the roadmap, but AFAIK still in development. There is a mounting point with contacts just forward of the onboard display that would presumably host the cradle. This essentially mimics direct mounting of RED monitors on the top front of a DSMC2. It is expected to be cable less.

My suggestion was to offer a cradle to cradle extension cable to facilitate other mounting locations. It should have several 1/4-20 threaded holes to interface with Noga arms, etc. Not too different than DSMC2 LCD/EVF ADAPTOR B in concept/design. I have no idea if anything like I'm suggesting is feasible, but as a longtime CamOp I can't stress enough how important it is to be able to position the EVF/LCD/Phone exactly where you need it.

Augmented Reality eyewear:

Facebook are proactively trying to workout what Apple are pumping R&D funds into .. and bulk buy their produce at the moment.

Hopefully Google, Apple, Facebook or another enterprising company (Microsoft?) will get a high res MicroLED product out before 2023(?).

Perhaps the H/W market needs killer sustainable software, and the software side need a solid piece of AR hardware to exist before they commit?

Agreed. I'm sure if Red doesn't make this, companies like wooden camera will quickly fill the gap.

Here's me with my head mounted display in 1988 shooting a horror feature called "Night Feeder". I made my HMD using parts from a welding helmet and harmonica holder, etc., which mounted my viewfinder at my eye and allowed my camera to be elsewhere. I've been planning on doing something similar with my Helium and EVF, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Komodo as well...

So... The Suicide Squad to be the first feature film to use the Komodo then ?
