  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

My first impression of this was "Yuck! Too much like my Panasonic GH5s!!". What I don't like about the Panasonic menus is that there are too many of them, strangely organized, and they try to do too much.

To me, things like base frame rate, format, shutter angle are very much project and/or scene specific. Good to know what universe we are living in, but not things I want to change willy-nilly. Iris, ND, WB, and maybe ISO are things that need to change on the fly.

Could split the bottom buttons into "scene" and "on the fly" settings, although I'd keep shutter angle with iris and ISO. Also, I keep forgetting this thing needs to be operable with only 4 buttons: up, down, back, and select.

Here's my attempt. First image is interface while recording. Second is in standby (with a subtle functionality hint :).

These seven boxes at the bottom are buttons, right?
Aren’t they too small? too many?
Soon, we gonna need a stylus to use Komodo!

I like your multi-purpose REC button very much.

UI & UX ideas video

UI & UX ideas video

Hi everyone! Happy to see so many mock-ups!

There are a bunch of things that I would also love to see easier access to. But for now – made the video about UI & UX ideas just for the bottom section of the main screen based on the official UI (same font size, elements and general layout). Kept all of the interactive bits below the image preview, to keep fingerprints and smudges away from that section of the screen. Mechanics can be extrapolated to other sections of the main screen as well as other menus. Minimalistic UI helps make everything consistent and eases the complexity of settings.

Wish I could come up with more stuff, but there is not enough info about the camera tech specs, what is possible and what MUST be in the menus.

Just make it like the Hassleblad X1D it’s perfect.
Hasselblad X1D UI is my favourite amongst photo cameras! I only wish the scrolling (for ISO etc.) was more robust.
there are old "flat and clean designs" as well as there is a new "skeuomorphic designs"
Absolutely! Soft design is the current trend (flat-looking with softened edges and less contrast, like one of the images you attached). But it is much less readable so not as useful for mainstream interfaces (OSes, cameras, cars, gaming etc.).
the fundamental weakness in post-iOS-7 look-and-feel is simply that it’s been drained of joy.
Hello fellow John Gruber follower! I do agree that iOS7 was a bit too much for a phone, draining all the joy and colour. But that doesn't apply for any UI, for example cars (especially head-up display) and cameras could always benefit from the consistency and readability of flat UI. You have to always be context-aware. And besides, there's that sweet 6K image preview for all the joy you may need :D
allow people to upload skins
having multiple skin options for a camera is like grabbing a guitar that is tuned differently. You have to instinctively remember the look of the menu, it has to be recognized even with a short peek. It is also part of the brand and should contribute to the iconic style. Everyone recognized first iPhones for the home button AND apps grid with a dock.

Damn Stanley. You don't mess around. Nice one!

A Custom layout would be awesome, you could pick which buttons you want on the screen?

I know someone like Brad must be used to seeing his face all over the place but I keep thinking camera interface mockups was his last remaining safe heaven. I hope he doesn't mind we just took that away from him too!

Great work Stanly! I kinda want to see more of your ideas.
How about single or multi finger gestures to load presets or to bring up our fav tools of choice such as Gio Scope ?

"Jarred wants nobody to mistake the camera for somebody else's."

Then why u all trying to make it an android UI, cheap, flat. Please give me the EXTRA looking drop shadow which screams fun and expensive camera.

Please include a copy of mock up pro for anon users like "Stanly" and everyone else so they can make whatever the h-ll they want.

Andrew, I meant what I said in regards to removing the RED logo from the screen, not how the UI looks.

Adding a few ideas in ; ) What do you think? More to come!

- Clear, high contrast for visibility and text readability
- Round RECORD button
- Adding a recording status bar on the bottom. On standby it becomes green
- A monochrome histogram still works a a small format like this + clipping RGB indicators in the blacks and in the highlights at each end of the histogram.
- The setting adjustment would use a system like Stanley's, but covering the bottom of the screen (mockup to come)
- Time remaining for battery and for CF card
- A new ASSIST shortcut that toggles a set of custom tools (Gio Scope + Composition Grid for example, Or Focus Peaking and False color)
- A shortcut to activate / deactivate the LUT / LOOK.

Alexandre,

I like this one a lot, it has pretty much everything you need! Will each one of those display items lead you to a sub-menu?

Thanks Rand! Yes there would be submenus to adjust the settings similar to what you and Stanley did with presets and a fine tuning slider ; ) I'll try to do a few this weekend.

Any color blind people around? We would prefer RED/CYAN or RED/BLUE patterns as color contrast for the REC button... RED/GREEN is pretty much the same for us. If this display may not become a Ishihara color test, it would be great!!

I've done some research that I would like to share:
"18th century chemists advanced a pseudo-scientific theory defining "primary" colors (yellow, blue, red) and "complementary" colors (green, purple, orange). As a result, it was common to naively believe in this scientific "truth" and we talked about pure colors and impure colors. This gave rise to a symbolism of green, considered to be the "complement" of red, the color of the forbidden, green has become its opposite, the color of permissiveness. This idea emerged from the 1800s, when international signage for boats was invented, and was later adopted for trains and cars."

As a child, my parents kept telling me that color blindness was not a handicap. As proof, they kept telling me that during WW2, the allies had aerial photos inspected by color-blind people because they were the only ones who could distinguish enemy camouflage.

Did they shoot colour for that purpose? I have not seen any, but I'm willing to be surprised!

Side note: from what I know, the British used stereo cameras (all b&w AFAIK), and some inspectors were lucky enough to use Leitz stereo viewers. ;-) The Germans had technically better aerial photos than the British (no surprise) but they weren't as good at interpreting them.

I am going to delete all of my UI posts prior to this one and organize them into 4 post that will show the 4 different record states and the menus from the "6KFF" button to the "5000K WB" in a more organized manner!
