  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Happy Easter I hope everyone is staying safe!

As some of you know our Mayor now extended the shutdown here in Los Angeles County to be at least half way through May. It does look like this social distancing is really having a positive effect though.. so let us keep on keeping on. The extra 2 weeks of lockdown will definitely affect the stormtroopers... likely day for day, but it is such a rollercoaster right now It impossible to predict.

We still are cruising along.... Engineering is getting a tremendous amount of work done and our manufacturing and supply chain literally wake up to a new plan and new direction every morning. As most of you have seen the sales team have been working on Solitare Series video chats and we have a bunch more of those and a few other online training deep dives coming soon so keep your eyes on our social.... even if you know everything about shooting RED these things are fun to partake in.

I also just posted a little PDAF update on Instagram... Considering it is Easter, there are a few small little easter eggs in there.

Thanks Jarred. Looking really smooth already. I keep thinking that my phone will be useful as a backup monitor, and forgetting that theres a monitor built-in :) The video display is not using the full width of the screen. Will there be options to make the interface elements smaller to maximise the video?

Regarding "R3D MQ", the fact that you've written out "R3D" implies other recording options. Care to spill any beans yet?

The duration timer on screen will be very useful.

Hi everyone!

Notice a bit of back and forth and "steps", reminiscent of contrast detect. Especially noticeable when focusing on the pink guy again. Overall looks promising and convenient with dragging the focus area.

The only improvement that doesn't look like it's happening is UI. Simply removing all of the unnecessary* drop-shadow and gradient effects would've taken it to a whole new level.

*all of those are unnecessary

Could very well be the 28-70mm f2 Canon RF lens.

Judging by the breathing this very well might be!

I am with you on this one. but it might still come.

Regarding the UI, maybe RED might develop “Skins” functionality where users can load
different Top Screen looks to suite their taste.

Would remind me of WINAMP if anyone remembers that software.

The UI seems clean-cut and simple enough to me.
The trend is more towards 2D and flat graphics, but that doesn't mean anything.

Hehe, winamp :D

Jarred, thanks for the update. Good Pesach, Happy Easter, and hope everyone is healthy.

Thanks for the easter eggs. Like Brian mentions, R3D MQ sounds like Medium Quality, perhaps there is a Low Quality and High Quality. (LQ, HQ) In due time, I'm sure Jarred will inform us of the ratio equivalent, perhaps 3:1, 7:1 and 15:1?

And 4 channels. Super kool.

Sounds like the stormtroopers may be held up a bit before battle, and normal units still on course. No need to rush the 1st Cavalry.

And you previously announced that PDAF might not be ready at launch! Red team is doing a wonderful job. This UI seems already familiar, feels like we already use Komodo everyday.

Did you get a chance to make a benchmark test CFast 2.0 cards already? Just to allow us to anticipate our next investments...

What are the chances will the komodo have a m43 adapter in the future?Apparently the Vazen 40mm covers S35 like the zcam s6

I've got a feeling we're going to see 3 levels of R3D from the Komodo

R3D HQ
R3D MQ
R3D LQ

Or maybe it's an ode to the classic Panasonic MQ DV tapes popularlized with the DVX100.

Crazy how we've come from the DVX100 (very revolutionary for it's day) to a camera like the Komodo.

This is one wicked little beast. Love the new tech.

Makes me hope I can achieve some more value to my 8K Heliums before the DSMC3 comes along...Perhaps DSMC3 for the 8K+ is a year away? 18 months?

Just as a personal fantasy I recreated the UI without skeuomorphism (and a couple of tweaks). Not saying that an hour or two of work is a solution to the problem that didn't necessarily exist, but I would prefer usability of this approach. Used one of the older photos of KOMODO as mock-up:

And of course those quick settings overlays:

There are a lot of usability possibilities here, especially with the Resolution & FPS UI & UX!

Stanly,

That Looks great Dude! I thought I had missed a post by Jarred when I first saw it!

YES! Please remove the unnecessary skeuomorphism. It makes the cam look so dated.

Like what you did here... good job and appreciate the effort. UI feedback input is welcome right now as I am torn between a few different overall directions. So speak up...

SO GOOD! Props, man!

How much of a pain in the ass would it be once the UI is all dialled in regarding the location of stuff to do it in say a light and dark mode? So nothing is changing apart from the back ground colour of it.
