  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Baby dragon is so small!!!
Got the 3D file that’s circulating on Facebook courtesy of Fabian Erblehner!

I love this so much.

Gregory wins ( if he wants ) a seat at the front of the line when the stormtroopers start to ship.

Is it possible to create a RAW camera that doesn't have any image delay in processing the picture to the monitoring path?
I have a problem when framing un reheased fast moves. I usually open my left eye to see what's happening in real life as the HDSDI feed shows me some significant lag.

Count me in!
Cannot say no to that! :cheers2:
Got a nice idea to give a little something funny back to the community :)

Well done jarred, that the RED spirit. Nice one Gregory.

Good job Gregory. And well deserved!
congrats, cool shots!
Hehe, I tough that much :)
See you soon in LA Gregory.

Congrats Greg! You deserve it.
Thanks Jarred! There are not enough ways to say it :)
And that right here is why I love the REDuser community!!!

Obviously, “soon” is a relative term, considering the fragility of the current world situation...
Hopefully everything will go according to plan and come some time in May, I’ll buy you all a round of beer or two while we sit down and come up with a cool joint project for all of our Stormtroopers!

Everyone stay healthy!

In the meantime, stay tuned for more while we wait... :)

And dynamic range. (at least every bit of footage I saw from the FP seems to be around 13-ish stops of DR max and we expect Komodo to be around 15)
But the FP is a good camera in its own right and the director's viewfinder mode looks awesome, at least to me.

The Sigma fp's has excellent color rendition and an impressive array of features, but no raw encoding (coming this summer, apparently?), no timecode, no wireless control, can't record raw without an external SSD hanging off it, and so on... it's a great compact stills camera that happens to record raw video, whereas the Komodo is a professional cinema camera that happens to have the same resolution as the Sigma fp.

There will be a legion of clickbait shootouts between the two I'm sure, but the reality is that the Sigma fp is really not a competitor to the Komodo. The ZCam line and the Kinefinity Terra cameras are much closer competitors. I don't really see the new Pocket cinema cameras fitting the bill either; they're too fat, and have too many operational problems (like the display not showing useful information such as time lapse mode being enabled) to compete.

And don't ask me how I discovered that bug...

What is the Field Monitor top candidate for Komodo so far?

Which brand has it shown on the teaser pics besides SMALL HD?

The fp is like a sensor in a box. It's uncompressed RAW to an external SSD (or 8 bit RAW with a tone curve to SDXC - calling it 8 bit is unfair because it's pre debayer 8 bit and the quality is remarkably good). If your workflow can handle it it can produce some beautiful images. No compression is really nice. The scale from 6K to UHD could be better but you can also run it in crop mode and get a 1:1 pixel from the centre of the sensor, around S35 size. You may see some aliasing, no OLPF. But it is tiny and lightweight and you can literally tape it to things.

But it's not a Komodo - the fp is really around 12 stops (bit more with highlight reconstruction) and it's a rolling shutter, albeit not too bad. It's also UHD which is problematic rather than DCI 4K and if you're in 25p land you cannot get 12 bit uncompressed. Komodo appears to be built better, higher range, R3D and a rolling shutter but it's also 2 to 3 times the price!

I mentioned before but i would love to see Komodo having a stills mode, or a nod to some stills orientated features. And some kind of really small HDMI/SDI based EVF!

cheers
Paul

Portkeys BM5ii shown here....2200nit, sdi/hdmi cross conversion, touchscreen, can control certain cameras via LANC or bluetooth.

I can agree with pretty much everything you said... except the part about the Sigma fp not being up to snuff on build quality. Indeed, by all accounts the Sigma fp has excellent build quality. I’m not saying the Komodo won’t also, but I don’t think the Sigma falls short in build quality at all. Honestly, if Komodo can match the Sigma on build quality we are in for quite a treat. For the Sigma, it’s all the details after that where the fp becomes a bit of a letdown. The fp is a camera I wanted to love. But too much is off to win me over.
