  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Curious to hear what is it you love with a 65mm sensor?

Probably the large formats characteristics: DOF, noise performance, those healthy big pixels soaking up light, etc.

I think it's safe to assume RED is probably working on larger format sensors/capture as well. Digital still has ways to go to match the experience of something both captured and projected in 15 perf true IMAX film.

Yep, all of that indeed.

Hey Jarred what’s the latest state of manufacturing in China for Komodo in relation to the Coronavirus? Has Komodo already been sourced to different manufacturers outside China or is RED still waiting for the dust to settle? Looked like Coronavirus was on the decline two weeks ago but is back to growing again. Terrible thing for those affected and rough to see how it is affecting the world markets. Apple today projects earnings for iPhone to be down this quarter due to the virus. The health of anyone potentially affected is the most important consideration, just hope they are able to quickly contain and develop a fast acting cure.

It's pretty terrible for everyone in China...We are not pushing at all just helping where we can and waiting for them to take care of all the people first. It's a pretty bad situation.

Mexico has done a really great job taking up a lot of the supply chain instability and I am pretty sure we will end up rolling over to them because even as China comes online the shipment situation is a nightmare right now and I imagine it will be for quite some time. I think after a few tests over the next year, we will do A LOT in Mexico going forward.

This health disaster today will probably lead to a financial disaster for China for many many months to come. Apart from the obvious financial impact of most of the workforce not working right now, and businesses being closed, I can only imagine the impact that is created when a lot of vendors ( including us ) move away from China to get their things made elsewhere, and a lot of those companies might not return back. Moving Manufacturing is not something you really want to do twice in one year. It's not fun, and it's not cheap.

and we are leveraging a global supply chain instead of just trying to make them all in Southern California.

I'm curious if you can say any more about this? I would've thought you were already using a global supply chain quite a bit as cameras require things like NAND and sensors that you just can't make without a fab. I figured the in-house stuff was mostly the assembly of those types of components in housings, bodies, mechanical parts that you made yourselves. Are you talking about not going outside not strictly for manufacturing but more of an ODM situation?

Mr Soderbergh would disagree :)

Well, since the company that designed the camera didn't design it to be an A cam for big productions, his opinion on the subject is irrelevant.

What Stephen Soderbergh's experience using AS an A camera on a big production shows that Red did a very good job on the camera, not that its designers didn't know what they were designing it for.

IMO it just makes his endorsement stronger, because it's basically telling us that it's good enough to hang with the big boys even though it wasn't designed to.

Was already in for one now I’m in for a second! Stormtrooper and a black one for those times I need 3 REDs or keep one on a gimbal while the other is on sticks or mounted to a car lol.

IPP2 and 3D luts?
Awesome news!!!

Exactly!
I'm trying to budget for an extra one or two as crash cams...

I am rather curious about if it will be possible to use Komodo as a stills camera. To me that kind of implementation would seem rather straight forward. I bought the side handle for the Epic that has a stills button, but it didn't ever get implemented to my knowledge. I wish for this functionality on Komodo especially since it is a smaller camera and has design cues borrowed from stills cameras. It would be rather easy to carry Komodo around and have it ready whenever images appear. Naturally it is possible to take images from video, but to me that isn't really the same.

Can you tell us Jarred more about resolutions and frame rates? Or is that still in the software side of things not hardware?

What does everyone think the price will be for non hydrogen owners?
I'm hoping to see some footage soon so I can decide if I'm gonna sell my c200 for this camera!

That brings up the next obvious question...
How secure is that CFast card (and the footage) in there?
And when you say "blown up", do you mean to pieces, or just in close proximity?

That opens up a world of possibilities for extremely risky takes!
Which is something I will try to avoid with my Stormtrooper, but the regular production baby dragons will be fair game!

I think what he meant was "El Kaboom" type blow ups :)

If this thing costs less than a 1Dx III and D6, Canon and Nikon got some splainin to do.

Canon is a global leader in multiple areas of technology. In a given month, Canon files over 6000 patents on their new inventions. In global camera sales, Canon leads their closest competitor by a margin of at least 1:10,000. They research, develop, design and fabricate their own CMOS and other digital imaging sensors. Canon designed a 250 million pixel CMOS sensor in 2015. They also, invented a sensor in 2015 with the equivalent of ISO 4,560,000. I've also, heard that they had developed a 160 Gigapixel CMOS sensor for earth bound and space telescopes. Financial wise, globally Canon probably makes daily more than what RED had made in their entire history. So, do they have some explaining to do? I doubt they would give two flying farts about what other companies are introducing. They do have their customer base and it is safe to bet on that number is going to increase as the time goes by.

However, Canon seems kinda always late to the party in digital cinema arena where ARRI and RED seems to hold a preference among DPs and Directors so far. Then again, ARRI is doing the same play cautious attitude in this industry.

Just like everyone else, I'd love to see Komodo become the go-to, the most compact, rugged, all weather, even the best digital cinema crash camera in the industry. But, we have to be realistic to say the least.
