  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

I am rather curious about if it will be possible to use Komodo as a stills camera.
It might be odd to use a cube as a stills camera, but if it's compact enough, it can work.

Canon is a global leader in multiple areas of technology.

Really? That leadership doesn't seem to be trickling into their sensors or cameras. Their sensors are the worst in the business. Their cameras are unappealing. Nobody else uses Canon sensors, but lots of companies use Sony sensors. But the divisions that don't make cameras? Yeah, they do good stuff I'm sure.

Canon is a global leader in multiple areas of technology...we have to be realistic to say the least.

I'm not sure what point you're making? Or what point you think I was making? My point was just that comparing data throughput, costs of making a jellotron DSLR sensor in-house in vast quantities vs buying small batches of a specialty global sensor, and generally having far higher sales to amortize across [perhaps even within just this one model, and certainly when you consider the far broader product portfolio over all], the 1Dx III ought to have lower costs than the Komodo. If anything I think much of what you mention supports that.

But also, 1:10,000?? Who do you think Canon's closest competitor is? They care about Nikon and Sony, not Red or Arri.

I am rather curious about if it will be possible to use Komodo as a stills camera. To me that kind of implementation would seem rather straight forward. I bought the side handle for the Epic that has a stills button, but it didn't ever get implemented to my knowledge. I wish for this functionality on Komodo especially since it is a smaller camera and has design cues borrowed from stills cameras. It would be rather easy to carry Komodo around and have it ready whenever images appear. Naturally it is possible to take images from video, but to me that isn't really the same.

Been waiting for stills functionality since the Epic-X too!
I think Komodo is the ideal size for that to happen and actually have some real world use.

What does everyone think the price will be for non hydrogen owners?
I'm hoping to see some footage soon so I can decide if I'm gonna sell my c200 for this camera!

My guesses:

$6499 for a stormtrooper (limited)

$5999 for a regular run

$4999 for an early hydrogen serial

Canon DSLR’S are designed for stills shooters. Video is an afterthought.

Your guesses are in line with mine.
(and my wishful-not-gonna-happen-guesses would be 500$ off of each tiers :p)

Yeah looks to be right around my thoughts as well, cant wait to enter my hydrogen serial number.

Jarred once production is ready will hyrdrogen owner get to do pre-order, and will this be processed directly with RED only or will dealers be able to offer it as well.

I wish Stormtrooper could benefit of the hydrogen deal... I know I'm asking too much but that's just a wish ;)

Or you can disassemble your regular Komodo and paint it white ?
(it is obviously a joke, please don't do that)

More in line with what we know, if manufacturing issues and added costs do to the COVID-19 do not make things much worst.

$7,500 - $7,950 for a stormtrooper.

$5,950 for a regular run.

$4,950 for an early hydrogen serial.
If that is correct I am going to be out and will have 2 preorder serials available if anyone is interested

That sounds sensible.
And I'm fully on-board!
(And waiting for the chance to grab a Stormtrooper of course ;) )

Would Komodo be listed under Netflix Certified cameras?

Would Komodo be listed under Netflix Certified cameras?

I doubt that Netflix is putting unreleased cameras on their list, so as of today - TBD.
Based on what we know about Komodo, I expect it to be Certified as soon as Netflix can test a production unit.

Cheers - #19

Yeah agree, I think it’s going to be 7 grand (usd) for a basic Komodo unfortunately.

Not to bad but it does make you start to ponder the other options at that price. Especially if dynamic range actually isn’t as great as initially thought. just have to wait and see some longer duration footage before we can Judge that. That Super Bowl TVC didn’t really tell us anything more than its small, nimble and can shoot a shot at least 1.5 seconds in length.

Still it’s a competitive price if you already have all the bits and pieces to go with it like cfast, batteries. Sdi Monitor. which a lot of people stepping up to this camera will have. so I think around $7000usd will be the price they go with considering the hype on the camera now.
