  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

I dont know, but to me what ever package you would get together I would say a dji inspire 2 6k would be a better option du to weight, built in gimbal etc. Dont really see the benefit of getting a komodo or red camera in air instead of the dji stuff..

Does DJI have global shutter?

can’t wait to get Komodo!!

Does DJI have global shutter?

On a drone its ofcrouse nice to have. But normally especially if you fly a 5k + USD camera you keep some distance to target and then the rolling shutter is not much of an issue, as camera is really well stabilised / not shaking etc on a drone. Good gimbal I find more important than rolling shutter on a cinema drone and the the Zenmuse 6k is difficult to beat in that regards.

Heh heh you never know. I've heard " Arri would never " a lot over the years.

I remember when we released the Red One with that crazy monster EVF and Arri had the D-20 optical finder and it was " Arri only makes cameras with optical finders" Until they didn't and switched to EVF.

And when we released the Monochrome sensor it was " you can just desaturate the Alexa color image to get the same... " but you couldn't and a year later they made a monochrome sensor.

And when we released the Epic it was " Arri would never make a mini Alexa box like the Epic as that's not what real cinematographers want " until they did.

And when we made Fincher's camera with all the built in wireless " Arri would never do such a silly thing. " until they did.

And you know the whole Arri campaign " 2k is enough "..... until it wasn't .

Arri isn't dumb... they eventually respond and when they respond they do it very well, and probably even smarter they usually always just sit back and wait for the dust to settle after we blindly trailblaze haphazardly through the weeds pretending to know the future...

THIS.

I have to disagree, Björn.
So far, I have been only asked to fly Inspire twice. Don't get me wrong, Inspire with X7 makes beautiful images. But production only ask for Inspire if there is no or limited budget. Director/DOP usually want you to fly the same camera/lens combo they shoot on the ground. Tell me want you want but that is reality. 99% it is either Alexa or RED, at least in my case.
Yes, Inspire can fly very fast and is agile. But so can a good custom build drone with 12S too - and it can carry much beefier camera setup at the same time.

Agree and disagree.
Unfortunately, Komodo doesn’t have internal stabilisation à la GoPro 7/8. I wished it had. That would be a game changer in the aerial/FPV world. Think, if you can mount Komodo on a bigger racing quad and do super high speed proximity flying along mountain ridges - this will be the next level of FPV Cinema. Global Shutter would definitely help in this regard.

OFF TOPIC:
There will be new drone regulations in Europe as of June 2020. Every single drone pilot must register himself and his drone and pass a theoretical test to be able to fly in the open category (outside of urban, cities, people etc.).
For the specific category (cities, near airports), or BLOS (beyond line of sight) additional requirements has to be met. Advanced theoretical test with practical exam. And your drone must fulfil "certain" CE standard. For the moment, this is not clear yet.

And YES, even if you want to fly DJI Mavic Mini, you have to register and pass a theoretical exam.
There are no exeptions, unless you want to take the risk and do something illegal.

So a lot of things will change soon.

Actually, GoPros only use EIS, so if there's any internal gyros on the Komodo, a similar "hypersmooth" stabilisation effect can be accomplished in post with Komodo footage by leveraging the data same as with it's bigger siblings.
Better yet, you can dial in the exact amount of stabilisation for more granular control.

Done that!
Passed the theoretical and waiting for the practical exam for all kinds of drones up to and including C4 (<25kg)
Drone must be insured too!
The Mavic Mini falls in the < C0 category but since it has a built-in camera it gets a bit more complicated... probably needs a license only for professional use, TBA...
Anyway, let's discuss the EU drone regulations in some other thread, lest we add more confusion to this super long but ever so addictive thread about the baby Dragon!

I'm curious what the Komodo's direct compatibility with Dragonframe will be. This could be an ideal head to use for stop motion and motion control setups. Many DSLRs work with Dragonfrome over a basic USB cable. So far DSMC2 cams need to feed in through an SDI module going to a converter box. This means losing the Dragonframe's in-app camera controls, which makes using an old Canon 5D an easier choice. But Komodo?

Yeah that would be great! We use dragon frame often for commercial work and it would be great to have matching codec.

Not sure if it is relevant in this context but many Canon lenses have optical IS including the very compact 35mm RF lens that seems to be perfect for gimbal use and probably for large drone use as well. It weighs just 10 oz so with Komodo and probably only one battery needed it is likely to be less than 3 pounds total on a drone. If Komodo has a robust wifi transmitter you might not need anything more on the camera/drone setup.

Also I wouldn't be surprised if they come out with an RF version of a "pancake" lens like the current EF 40 millimeter pancake that only weighs about 4.5 ounces. Not sure if there are technical issues with the much shorter flange distance but offhand I don't think there is. A quick google suggests that ideal pancake focal length is around the flange distance so likely 18 or 20mm, which would be an excellent addition to the RF 35mm for gimbal or drone work.

How's Komodo sensor size regarding Speed Boosting full frame EF lenses? All the EF-Leitax Leica R, Contax Zeiss, Canon FD.

There is an EF - RF Speed Booster Ultra available, wondering if Metabones decides to give it the 'cine-treatment'.

Hi! You should definitely spend 4-5 days readings previous posts! Or simply check out Phil Holland posts about that mater.

Enjoy

Anyone know what the crop factor would be using an EF full frame lens on Komodo? What would a 35mm full frame EF lens be on Komodo RF through an RF to EF adapter?

Komodo's crop factor is around 1.3. An EF to RF adapter doesn't have any effect on crop factor...it's 1.3 whether you'd use a native RF lens or EF lens via adapter. Crop factor is determined only by sensor size, not the lens or adapter, so it's 1.3 no matter what lens/adapter combination you use (unless you're talking about using a Speed Booster).

I think you're getting mixed up with your terminology there. You might already know what I'm about to say, but it's the internet and misinformation runs rampant here so allow me to be a little pedantic.

Remember, the crop factor comes with the comparison to different formats, not different lenses designed for different formats. The way you've worded it seems to imply that the crop factor is inherent to the lens itself, which is why you described the lens as a "Full Frame lens." You also added extra details like EF mount and RF to EF adapter -- these things don't change the focal length.

A 35mm is a 35mm is a 35mm. It doesn't matter what mount it has or what format coverage it is designed for. So if you're asking if this 35mm lens that was designed for FF coverage, when mounted onto a Komodo, will see a different frame than a Super 35-designed 35mm on Komodo, the answer is no.

But if you're talking about the difference between a 35mm when viewed on a FF format camera versus a 35mm on a Komodo, then Phil's got your answer right here:

http://phfx.com/tools/formatCompare...B=Film&formatB=FF35+Still+3:2&focalLengths=35

Yeah there is already an RF to EF adapter which will make it full frame. So def something I would consider If i would buy a komodo (waiting on prices / IQ / specs)

Ha ! I have a question... But if it has already been answered please forgive me...

Here I go : will Komodo be compatible with the Cooke /i technology ? (obviously via a mount adapter since I don't think this protocol is available on RF mount lenses... yet ?)
If not, is there similar technology compatible with the camera ?

I would get your point if it was a 25 page thread. We're up to 358 pages which means thousands of posts and even when trying to sort Phils through the search I couldn't really find the post mentioning if 0,71 boosting makes sense with the Komodo's sensor size.

It's a simple yes or no answer - if it's that simple and you know it.

If it's not I guess it's worth discussing, there's been another post suggesting interest about this topic in the meantime.

We discussed the metabones speedbooster a while back. There was no simple yes or no answer, but if you can find a full frame image from an RF mount camera with the speedbooster on we would be able to check if Komodo will vignette at 6K. Read for a few pages from here: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?177459-KOMODO/page261

And here's a useful post of everything we know so far:
