  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

I purchased an RF 35 1.8 for my EOS R gimbal camera about a year. It hasn’t left the body since. love that little lens. We traveled the world together in 2019. Will be a Great gimbal choice for Komodo.

Should be a great gimbal lens, very lightweight and short so smaller CG offset. It is designed to cover DSLR full Frame (36x24) and testing shows that in the center it is as good as sigma art 35 and Canon EF 35mm L lens with slightly lower performance in edge/corner performance. Since Komodo is basically an APS-C size sensor those slight performance degradations should be mitigated as they are outside of the Komodo frame.

Happy New Year to all. I recently picked up the RF trinity and love all the new lenses. The 15-35 and the 24-70 see the most use. But the 70-200 is always nearby now that it is small enough to snug into my bag. It's a great lens system. Now that i have the trinity the 24-105 f4 sees much less action. But it's there for whenever I wish to travel extra light.

I hope to see GDU come out with Canon RF 35mm Macro f/1.8!

Not sure how it performs on video yet, but his is a very sharp little lens with fantastic Macro capabilities.
Could be a perfect first lens for the Komodo, especially if Armored by GDU!

What’s also great is that this RF 35 should be the perfect partner for an Isco 36 ;)

Guys, if you're going to quote him on the RF 35, please do what he should've done in the original post and delete the image tags for that massive uneccessary photo of the lens. It's making these pages hard to scroll through.

oh boy yes, please.

I've been staring intently at this image … And all I can think of, is there a similar image of this lens with the body cap (end) off ?

The normal RF fitting/ flange ID etc. is like 54 mm ⌀ (If I remember rightly), ?

That's a wide ass lens barrel (nice).

Good close look at the knurling (nice and crisp) , did they use broaching or are those key ways molded or stamped, nice threading and use of different materials and surface finishes / coatings etc.

So you can see the image from space... or it's about the right size for a small smart-phone ? (my eye sight ain't what it used to be.).

Happy now?

Happy now?

(Faceplam ) you caved … tut tut lol.

It's funny "Peeps" I have known for many years in visual arts and design and photography and film virtually never complain that an image is tooo BIG lol. (That's excluding scenic painters / backdrops back in the day .).

"It's too big! " ~ 'cuz internet.

I'm serious about the flange... Will poke about
.

It took all my strength and will for normalcy and conformity to not repost Lee Saxon's comment with the giant image ... "You mean like this ??? Don't do this ? "...

@Lee S and @Ketch R you guys are the best. [big hugs]. Hoping 2020 is gonna be BIG for all of us !

Interesting news about the release for Komodo.
This is what Jarred told in the DSMC2 Facebook group:

“(...) Komodo isn't being sold yet. But we are shipping the pre-production units out around the world to be used on some pretty insane stuff right now... for testing. We still have a few mechanical tweeks to do from all the feedback so hold on to your horses, you still have a few months to go.”

So I guess we’ll have to wait until March to order it (hopefully full specs and pre-orders in February)

^^^ That's what I'd kinda expect too / my "Vibe " on that too.

Wonder how the pre-order thing will go down...

I've kinda not exactly been waiting for RED to turn out a globally shuttered sensor of some sort for over a decade now... So a few more months is not a deal beaker lol.

Kinda interesting how folks have become spoilt with more contemporary technologies... 'Ohhh no , no dual ISO / Gemini characteristics "

I remember back in the 'Old days" making the switch from Film to Digital that the dynamic range was less than what is available now (almost substantially so) and yet we still were able to generate world class imagery … More mindful of lighting in some instances.

Seems Jarred on #insta-jarred has a few seemingly low light shots and tricky backgrounds that seem to indicate that KOMODO is no stunted slouch in terms of Dynamic Range and reasonable low light capability.

But for sure we will (my little ship) will be taking the Global Shutter capability to the MAX no matter what form it is delivered in.

You’re right: I’ve already noticed that a few times they posted shooting at high ISO (1700)
Hopefully, dual ISO

It doesn't have regretfully dual ISO. This has been mentioned already. I's a bit of a bummer for me, but there are reasons as for why a Gemini costs 3-4times a Komodo...Maybe it'll have a native ISO of 1280 since Jarred's posted image of the top screen showed ISO1280?
That coupled with a truly proper AFc (in combination with the native RF lenses) would make my dream combo..

I haven’t read any confirmation or denial yet. The only thing I found Jarred said was that it will have less Dynamic Range than Gemini
So, who knows?

Jarred said dynamic range is similar to Helium. Except for Monstro all of the DSMC2's are spec'd at 16.5 stops DR. Dual gain may reduce shadow noise at high ISO's but it does cost DR, at least a couple of stops. There is no free lunch.
As Mr. Simic has pointed out repeatedly, gain or not, you are still going to get a thin lifeless negative at extreme high ISO's because the sensor is not saturated with light.
Indeed when there is so little light, there is not enough surface reflectivity to produce rich color. High ISO is not a substitute for even minimal creative lighting to improve IQ.
There were a couple of firmware experiments with the Digital Bolex applying pre-charge gain to the sensor, essentially partially filling the pixel well to get black level above the noise floor. But it didn't work out as the loss of DR on a 12 stop sensor wasn't worth it. Better to deal with the noise in post.

Very True. Although I'm no longer holding my breath for it I silently still hold my fingers crossed...

Equally or even more important to me is AF. I'm very curious of the AFc possibilities...

Jarred has already mentioned the AF implementation will take a while. Don’t expect a miracle... not at first anyway.

I shoot a Digital Bolex, have for five years now. S16 sized global shutter CCD 2k DCI format uncompressed CDNG raw only camera. Decided to go raw only after playing with an early Red One, but couldn't afford a Red after the original 2/3" 3k for $3k Scarlet morphed into the $10k+ S35 Scarlet. For me it is a personal creative camera, not a commercial production tool.

Those are nice cameras. I was hoping the company would be able to thrive, but it just goes to show how hard it is to be a successful camera manufacturer these days.

Just as exciting as the Komodo itself, is the fact that Red's sensor team will most likely apply its experience developing global/rolling shutter + auto focus support into a future sensor for its DSMC lineup... :)

Jarred said dynamic range is similar to Helium. Except for Monstro all of the DSMC2's are spec'd at 16.5 stops DR.

I didn't mention it because it might sound antagonistic and I value the leader of a camera company interacting with the users in this way, but I actually had a question about that. Jarred said Komodo will have similar DR to Helium, but also the Gemini has more DR than Komodo, which by default means that Gemini has more DR than Helium. But as you say, Dragon, Helium and Gemini are rated the same by RED everywhere I've seen (see here).

So I'm confused as to the DR differences between the sensors (Dragon; Helium; Gemini; Monstro and now Komodo). I looked for tests but didn't find anything I thought was definitive....
