  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

And it is.. because every other 3rd party monitor that sits on top of your camera and connects with SDI needs to get power from somewhere else...

I see. So an advantage over third party monitors, but not an advantage over Red monitors.

I'm starting to really like the Hydrogen monitoring idea. Especially if it will record proxies onto the phone. Would be very convenient in the field to have everything I've shot available to review at any time on my Hydrogen.

As fun as it is... I am not just messing with you guys just for the sake of teasing you all.....Specs have not been 100% locked down yet so it would be hazardous to give them.

Just do 6K with a decent compression ratio with at least 50 fps in FF and it will please most people. Everything on top of that will be great, but as you mentioned, if it does one thing and one thing very well, let it be those recording specs.

I would say 6K 60P would be the rate where all the world would be happy with. Both Ntsc and pal broadcast standards would be included for the two most common delivery requirements in both regions: 60p/24p and 50p/25p

This.
But if the IQ is as exceptional as Jarred is hinting, I won’t care much about the frame rates.

Komodo is a badass little RED.. the size is incredible but it really is all about that sensor. And before people get carried away.. what makes it special has nothing to do with the numbers...

I find this more intriguing than anything.

Everything can be expressed with numbers. I learned that from the TV show Numbers.

Nevertheless, some things are much harder to quantify than others, which brings me to the conclusion that this new sensor more than likely has a design based on love, is constructed of happiness and the images look like desire.

Does it have a name yet? Or, does the name reveal too much? Either way, don’t tell us. It’s too soon.

Also, does it need a theme song? I’d do it for a reasonable amount of numbers...but, I’m telling you right now, it won’t be dubstep.

Mostly out of convenience. I mean you don't NEED to use a Hydrogen, obviously, but the cradle integration for a small self powered monitor with no cables is incredibly convenient.

Nope.. because neither do we. We have been putting the prototypes in some rockstar hands over the last few months and will continue to do so over the next few months to really bang on and blow up, so you are seeing them here there and everywhere.

There is a lot more testing than usual because the RED engineering team created an entire new sensor for this one.. so we really need to put it through it's paces. Komodo is a badass little RED.. the size is incredible but it really is all about that sensor. And before people get carried away.. what makes it special has nothing to do with numbers.

Anyways, After that testing is done.. and when we stop changing things, then we turn on the machine and start rolling them out. So you know you have at least a few more months of watching and waiting...

I'd rather wait until it's 100 percent ready, though end of year is money spending tax write off time! early 2020 is save money and see how the year is going to be time...but regardless dont rush it out before you are satisfied!

Ha ha well technically you of course are right. And loved that show :)

Very intriguing! Though it's also a bit challenging to imagine what you could have done to improve on the Helium and Gemini generation given how beautiful their color rendition is nowadays.

Argh! Actually, that's not such a big argh; my Sony stills camera shutter died after IIRC six years, so I can replace that now and plenty of time to set aside money for a Komodo :)

Jarrd, thanks for taking the time to clarify a few things. Its greatly appreciated. I know you're putting Komodo through some rigorous testing using top people in the industry but I was wondering if you're also letting some indie/one man band/smaller production test it as well? I am only saying this because by testing in both high end production and much smaller productions you would get a better overall feel for how the camera is doing and stuff. As I'm sure you are aware the needs and usage are different for these two groups. :-)

«*It’s All about this sensor*» Is global shutter even possible?

Global Shutters are awesome, specially with fast moving stuff at normal framerates , but Rolling shutters have become so far ahead of them that global shutters were given up on by almost everyone quite a few years back and tucked away into the unattainable unicorn box.

I know me posting photos because I just can't help myself is a bit torture to some of you with so little info. Ill try to stop :)

Torture?
I'm just adding stuff to my shopping list ;)
Thanks for the teases, helps while away the wait!
What else would we do, work???
