  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Yea, I think this has to do 120fps in 4K to be really competitive in the market. Seems as though the higher ISO performance will be much better than Raven or Scarlet-W, so that's good.

If this thing can do 120fps in 4K with close to a Super35 crop (1.6x maybe?), good at ISO 3200, and Super35 or bigger at 5k (1.4x, I'm hoping), it will do really well. Especially since it will probably do R3D internal, which remains huge compared to so many other cameras' internal recording options.

I don't see Komodo pulling many sales from Red's higher end offerings. I do see it potentially getting it into a market range they have not penetrated before.

Seems to me that although 60fps at 6K would be great the following would make sense:

50 fps at 6K would match the Pocket 6K - and the Red brand, and RedRaw/etc would justify the price jump.
60 fps at 5K would slightly outdo BMD Ursa MiniPro 4.6K G2 (IIRC)
100-120 fps at 4K should cover the requests below.

Also while no-one would deny the usefulness of dual slots, that extra slot would almost have to take up .25"x1.5"x2" - which is a lot of volume on a 4"x4"x4" or smaller cube that would be better used by additional electronics or connectors. And as far as "out in the boonies" in the field backups, it would seem that the likelihood of a glitch on one that wouldn't be on the second would be extremely rare. Given that we are now talking commodity CFAST cards it seems that you would just buy or rent however many cards you would need to cover your entire shoot. (Also aren't there small devices that will transfer CFAST to SSDs that are very small and don't require a computer?)

Finally the use of the Hydrogen as a monitor is sort of brilliant, especially for that ultra lightweight "out in the boonies" type of shoot, as I can't imagine in this day and age that you wouldn't take a cell phone along and the Hydrogen would cover both needs. Seems fairly obvious to me that the Hydrogen will allow wireless monitoring from the Komodo (that's what the antenna is for) - and wireless monitoring on cellphones is fairly common these days, even over pretty long distances with drones. They may offer a cable ability as well - a Komodo pogo to Hydrogen pogo should be possible either with a bracket that wraps around the edges of the Hydrogen or a via a Hydrogen case that incorporates the pogo connector, however wired capability to Hydrogen seems unnecessary to me - if you are working a lot in environments that preclude using wireless, it seems like a wired connection to a RED or other monitor would make more sense.

The more I hear and think about it, the more excited and interested I am in the Komodo. I hope RED gives us all they can for the price and form factor without worrying about eating into sales of the rest of the line as I think that at the $5K/$6Kish price point and without the limitations of the Raven, they will sell the sh*t out of them and volume will make up for any losses in the rest of the line. For the professional, this price point is a no brainer for a second camera, and for the newcomer or hobbyist it is a lot easier sell psychologically than getting up close to $10K. For comparison the original 2003 $4000 price of the Panasonic DVX100 (the camera that setoff the prosumer/student/hobbyist low budget indie 24P revolution) translates to about $5600 in today's dollars.

I think that the minimum needed for 6K is 50fps. 40fps would be ok I guess, but 50 fps is very much needed for plenty of shoots, not to mention HFR work at 48fps, which I personally I don't like, but is a thing that some people want.

I think a few commercial DPs on this site have said that they are tempted to shoot 48fps at all times. They can easily blend frame pairs for normal footage, and they have 2x slow motion if they need it. I'm tempted to agree with that philosophy. I mean, it's digital, right? The extra cost would be negligible. Imagine shooting 48fps on film all the time.

I am also puzzled on why they are still trying to integrate it with Hydrogen?

Because of high resolution monitoring, touch interface, processing power, multifunctionality, interoperability and OS customization, made possible by a single attached plate ?

I am also puzzled on why they are still trying to integrate it with Hydrogen?...I mean no offense but that device is terrible.

Mostly out of convenience. I mean you don't NEED to use a Hydrogen, obviously, but the cradle integration for a small self powered monitor with no cables is incredibly convenient.

Do we have a release / availability date for Komodo?

Nope.. because neither do we. We have been putting the prototypes in some rockstar hands over the last few months and will continue to do so over the next few months to really bang on and blow up, so you are seeing them here there and everywhere.

There is a lot more testing than usual because the RED engineering team created an entire new sensor for this one.. so we really need to put it through it's paces. Komodo is a badass little RED.. the size is incredible but it really is all about that sensor. And before people get carried away.. what makes it special has nothing to do with numbers.

Anyways, After that testing is done.. and when we stop changing things, then we turn on the machine and start rolling them out. So you know you have at least a few more months of watching and waiting...

No cables? So the Hydrogen link is wireless? Or perhaps the cradle does the connections (most likely I would guess). I was hoping for wireless monitoring, maybe that's still doable hence the antenna.

It's been a while since we've had a good red marketing tease and the speculation is half the fun.

It will be interesting how Komodo is differentiated from DSMC2. IMHO I rarely shoot off speed, so i'd be happy with an awesome image at the usual frame rates...

cheers

ha ha... no cables as in cradle pins to hydrogen pins :)

This also confused me a bit. If it's wireless then why is it Hydrogen-specific and not Android monitoring? If it connects via the Hydrogen's rear pins, whey would it be an advantage for it to be self-powered, when the camera could just power the phone?

EDIT:

I didn't say wireless. I said no cables :)

That's great to hear Jarred, would you say that this new sensor plays in the same league as other Red sensors in term of pure image quality (dynamic range / Color science) ?
When i first heard of Komodo i thought its sensor would be a lowered version of the already existing ones..

Then you may as well just tell us the max frame rates :-)

As fun as it is... I am not just messing with you guys just for the sake of teasing you all.....Specs have not been 100% locked down yet so it would be hazardous to give them.

I laid this all down at the start... Komodo specs and ship dates and everything else about Komodo will come when it's ready. I know me posting photos because I just can't help myself is a bit torture to some of you with so little info. Ill try to stop :)

Weight for the H1 cradle please

Fair enough. But you also said it was an advantage that it was self-powered.

And it is.. because every other 3rd party monitor that sits on top of your camera and connects with SDI needs to get power from somewhere else...

Is it too soon to share some images taken with Komodo? Maybe a short clip or two?

Mmm... okay. How about this: I often shoot 6K 50fps wildlife content. Might this camera be a good fit for me?

I'm in the same situation and trying to build lightest possible 3D rig (currently using Ravens & its still too heavy for run-n-gun)...
