  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

My only potential concern with this camera will be the crop in 4K. Red could have avoided a lot of issues with their existing lineup if they just made the Komodo a great 4K camera (putting it in its own market segment compared to their higher-end cameras).

A full-frame DCI 4K camera that has R3D and their usual 4k frame rates (120fps or so) while also having an RF Mount and CFast cards and small Canon batteries that last all day would be an instant buy for me. Even all of that at Super35 4K would be an instant buy. As long as ISO 2000 looked great and 3200 was usable.

But, at 6K, I don't think there is any way we're getting something that won't have close to a 2x+ crop in 4K now. The 6K is probably Super35, as a 6K full-frame camera would really step on the toes of Monstro and Gemini. So that means a very significant crop in 4K, which is what I do 99% of my work in and is a sweet spot for file size and storage costs, especially with R3D files.

We'll see and it's still looking likely I'll snag one of these if it at least has R3D and 120fps in 4K, but really hoping for a minimal crop (close to Super35) in 5K.

I agree with all of this.

RED's most common pixel size is 5 microns. If that is what Komodo uses, 6k will be 30.72mm wide, larger than super 35, same as Gemini. 5K will be 25.6mm wide, slightly larger than S35, and 4k will be 20.48mm wide, a 1.2 crop factor. This does seem to be the most likely scenario.
Don't forget that rather than recording Prores or some other codec internally it is likely to scale full sensor or 5k to 4k SDI for external recorders.

I think this would work for me, if true, as long as the 4k and 5k are clean at ISO 2000 and usable at 3200.

agreed, this is what i've been saying too, where the crop falls at 4k is my main concern. I like what sony did actually, its a 6k sensor but records a full sensor scale down at 4k.

I don’t care about the full specs, it being 6K and s35 shooting r3d is all I need. I am dying to see some footage, if it’s a little brother to the Gemini skin tone and color wise I will be in love. If it’s clean up to 3200 that would be a welcomed bonus

Don't worry you will see lots of footage before you can actually buy Komodo.. It has already shot a feature :)

And Komodo is not a surprise "take over the lower end market" camera, it's a camera designed for a specific application at the highest level and hence is being tested and tested and tested and then tested some more before release. That has always been the plan since the start, remember I told you all exactly how Komodo would be rolled out and it's sticking to that path pretty well.

Of course.. people will compare it to everything else out there from Black magics to our own cameras and everything else in between.. but it really sits in it's own market... at least that is what it was designed to do. It's a complimentary camera , designed to take the best images possible that do one thing very, very well in its most simplest of form.

It is not a replacement camera nor should it be anyones first camera, even though I am well aware that it probably will be one or both of those for some, because It is good... It is really, really good.

Sorry Darius, I quoted you but then got sidetracked and didn't actually respond to your question... Anyways, if that's your list, then you should be happy.

I can't wait to see it... with any luck I'll be able to use it on some of the films we have in development and/or preproduction :)

Well that's good to hear. Clean to ISO 3200 and at least Super35 at 6k and shooting R3D. Sounds good to me. Glad I already have my batteries and the RF Variable ND adapter. Looking forward to release.

The Soderbergh feature will show before a Komodo purchase can be made? What kind of time frame is that? 6mos or 1yr

Hmm... I really don’t get what kind of camera this is.
If it’s 6K, shoot R3D’s on a S35 (or larger?) sensor that is clean at ISO 3200 and use tiny batteries that will last all day... Why wouldn’t lots of people wanna use it as their A-Cam?
I almost never shoot high speed and 6K is more than enough for my needs... Why would I want anything more than a Komodo?
Or am I forgetting something? What’s the catch? :)

We don’t know compression and frame rates yet.

Dude Bob you're always 4 steps ahead. Love it. I think you've nailed it with this.

Komodo may well be limited to say 30fps at 6K. And also 8:1 compression. Fine for many needs, but not for others.

This makes what Jarred is saying make total, total sense.

Speaking to Jarred's hint about Komodo's uniqueness (ie it does one thing very well): we already know what Komodo does that no other RED can do - output 4K SDI. This may also be part of its uniqueness. Who knows maybe Komodo's most gradable master files are 4K Prores 4444 Quicktimes, and the R3Ds are 10:1 compression - they are almost proxies. Anything is possible I realize.

Very curious for the final reveal.

Ha ha. 4K SDI is interesting as thats now in Atomos Raw recorder territory. But as a small nimble camera ideal for gimbals, I would hate external recorders. Plus if it is gimbal focused, I would certainly love up to 48 FPS. Music videos and corporate films always want some slo-mo!

But the surprise could be having sensor level stabilization which is certainly where things are headed.

Hey this season of Mindhunter, which I think is an amazingly beautiful show, was shot 8:1. If all other things are equal I’d take that (I know you’re just speculating).

I think you may have hit on something with the 4K SDI. I wouldn’t be shocked if this thing needs a specific module to shoot r3d, and it primarily shoots to an external recorder over that sdi.

Don't worry, we already know it shoots internally (R3D... Well, we know it records internally and that it can record R3D....)

WOW 8:1!!! I would have never thought this....Nice to know

Hey, are you sure ? Netflix seems to be asking a 6:1 maximum compression ratio for 6K RED cameras. (I know the Xenomorph is not listed by Netflix but isn't it basically a Dragon 6K in a custom shell ?)

Yeah, I mean personally I'm assuming it shoots R3D masters (but yeah maybe maxes out at 6:1 or 8:1). Maybe the 4K SDI is for streaming, etc? All part of Komodo being the best digital content cam?

About slowmo - even if it had 48fps at 5K that would be great. But agreed 48fps at max K would be optimal.

Hmmm...the inner gyro...BOB you are killing it again. Maybe this is it?

Maybe Komodo IS all about digital content - from 4K streaming, to gimbal friendly, to 4K Prores if you need it - Komodo has you covered.
