  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

I would assume that RED has thought about what verticals they might get traction in if they could meet certain specs. Total size, power consumption, easy tap into established infrastructure (SDI as it turns out) and a multipin physical connector to enable operations unsuited to wireless comms. Clean and simple.

Whether its a Hydrogen or something else, an off board control/monitoring topology is already become common on set (Fool Control, Pocket Control, etc). I'd expect that "driving" many camera operations will happen near to - but not on - camera via wireless. How awesome would it be if you could snap your Hydrogen on to the top of the Komodo as your on board monitor (recharge station...) then remove it and walk away - perhaps with proxy files from the shoot loaded on...

Per the TC discussion, I have been digging the TimeCodeSystems Ultra-Syncs wireless solution that puts a tiny box (we call them matchboxes) on each device you want to sync. They have their own internal batteries. Their sync signal is on low band RF, so it neither causes or suffers from interference in the (2.4GHz, 5.6GHz, etc) high band space where video hops, WiFi, etc live. I'd expect such functionality in camera to become a standard feature in the not too distant future.

IAC, lots of exciting possibilities!

Until DSMC3 (or maybe this is the beginning of that). It Sounds like KOMODO will be the best RED camera outside of Monstro. Just my speculation based on Fahnon’s post.

Besides recording proxies the phone could upload them to a cloud server for dailies cuts.

True, he has, but not with Meryl Streep leading (probably want something more serious for that), and Fincher was also part of the equation there. This seems like they both can afford to shoot Monstro so why go RED at all if it was lacking something as basic as TC?

I could be wrong, but I’d be surprised if this thing didn’t have a way to get TC in.

Soderbergh‘s Twitter picture showed an Atomos Shogun Inferno, you could sync Timecode with it... So could that be the workaround if you can’t get it through the Komodo “brain”?

IMO, you could live on the Shogun footage until final color even on a feature - with the exception of any key VFX pulls/comps/etc. With the Komodo so early in it's life, no offense to RED, you're going to want redundant TC which the Shogun can provide. No doubt the folks involved have it all well in hand, its not their first rodeo.

Do you guys think it's safe to say that IPP2 will be native in this cam? Also, their signature 16+ stops of DR?

wow.. great deal. I just paid $200 for mine ;)

Don't know how good these are but some folks bought these through Amazon for $26.00 and are happy about them.

I heart USB charging. I really do. It makes field shooting/mobile work sooo much easier, since you don't have to fiddle with chargers and battery plates.

Kastar products are considered to be shit junk-ware. Sometimes they work alright for a few months and often they are DOA or go within a few weeks of heavy use, but they are popular because of the price. You can find battery test reviews that show their products are often under-performing and not near the stated specs, but that's rather normal for off-brand stuff. Also, their customer service is non-existent.

This thing has to have some sort of TC. I can't imagine Soderbergh and Fincher would be bolting TentacleSyncs on in an actual production.

Why not? Audible LTC workflows are simple, effective, and well supported. Also worth mentioning that Tentacle sync boxes are terrific; when size is a consideration, they’re second only to Denecke, IMO.

Don’t knock it ‘till you try it.

I'm referring to some way to jam timecode mainly. Given the only port we see on there is a 3.5mm mic, I wonder if we can feed TC that way or maybe a wireless way or maybe "just use the force" (joking, sync to slate). It could involve the EXT port similar to the breakout cable we use in our world already.

I'm not really opposed to any of those methods btw. There's one or two I prefer in that mix, just curious to know what we'll end up having.

I don't think I'd expect this camera to generate timecode, then the question of transmission is there. But who knows, there could be a lot of new stuff inside this little lizard.

I don’t think it’s likely for this body, but something that I have noticed with more than a few of RED’s custom bodies is that they’ve integrated Zaxcom hardware for wireless audio and timecode. Worth noting is that the latest Zaxcom recorder, Nova, is using a newer version of ZaxNet that can transmit Scene, Take, and file metadata wirelessly across set. What I’d give to have ZaxNet or Zaxcom’s digital UHF reception in camera... ;)

Oh man. You're going to make me whip out my Maxx again.

Which reminds me. I need to dig in and see if there's any new two channel or quad channel w/ timecode gen field recorders. I have a few, but I always feel like something is missing.

My favourite little travel recorder. I’m a fully Zaxcom shop at this point; they don’t always nail the fit and finish but they’re sure pushing boundaries with the feature set.

I wish the smaller MixPre recorders did, but they only RECEIVE timecode rather than generate it. Closest thing is a Zoom F4/F6, but go ahead and ask me how much I trust a Zoom...

Yep, similar vibes.

At the moment the MixPre6 is my goto little recorder. My Maxx is what we used on my last narrative piece, the Zoom F8 hasn't done much lately. Got a bunch of other two channel stuff, but I might be looking to consolidate into one or two recorders at this point. I have no idea why I have so many.

I'm curious on the F6 with it's 'RAW' audio recording!

Back to topic. With the size you would expect the ability to genlock and sync multiples of these together. The look ideal for smaller 360 rigs and 3D.

There's audio in isn't there, so a tentacle could do an audio TC track as a last resort.

cheers
Paul
