  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Hope other manufacturers (Tokina, Formatt, etc.) will offer fixed ND filters to fit Canon Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter.

An eND solution would be interesting option as well.

So you went with the 7350 mAh, I think I would most likely go with the 5200 mAh for my Komodo to keep it more compact ;)

I'll definitely get the smaller ones as well, but the deal was too good to pass up for two of the big ones - and I'm sure I'll need them at some point.

So this is confirmed to be a camera running on lower voltage. Very interesting. To me this confirms a completely new sensor running on lower power requirements than what we've seen up to now. Which may mean lower quality sensor with lower DR for instance.
But... when you contemplate RED's DNA they tend to push things and not settle for lower image quality.

If that's the case this new sensor could be in line with current DSMC2 sensors in terms of DR and color and light sensitivity. (Not frame rates)

If true I really want to know how they did this. Has technology suddenly made such a leap forward that allows camera manufacturers to put a top of the line sensor design capturing raw data in a little box running on low power ? If it had been possible before now, I assume they would have done it ...

From early last year - if the sensor is new maybe it's through a partnership like this (unless this news has been debunked in the interim?)

As an early Ti Hydrogen customer (which sadly is sitting in it's box) i'm very curious about this - i was seriously looking at Z Cam so this is great timing.

The pain of waiting for news....

cheers
Paul

Foxxcon took over Sharp and its not a leap to think they will continue to make CMOS sensors. Who knows, maybe the Komodo is the first out of the gate using these sensors.

I also really hope their EXT port or whatever external control port(s) that'll be on there is envisioned to be as future proof as possible and maximize flexibility and combos. For instance connecting to a MDR tapping into RED camera control like what Teradek/RTmotion is up to with accessory integration like thumbwheel and controllers that also access camera's settings and operation.

And then also connecting to another external control devices like SmallHD Cine monitor series that offer a 1800 nits touch screen camera control display. RED support is coming for this line. Really hope/expect a Cine 5 inch is coming, perfect size for komodo.

These two accessories tap into RED's camera control. Being able to use both at the same time would be golden. Hope the team has been designing everything with that in mind... Maybe there will also be some form of modularity, back connectors perhaps, allowing clean integration of things like video transmitters...

BP975 have been around for years (decades?), have a capacity of 56Wh (~hour runtime on DSMC1 & 2), hold their max capacity for years even when stored, and are thinner than REDvolts... Was there a reason why they weren't used as the original side handle batteries, because they're basically like Daft Punk & Kanye (cheaper, better, faster, stronger)?

2 x 30? Watt batteries.

Does that mean that Komodo can run:
+) For 2 hours with two full batteries
+) or 1 x battery hotswap each hour ad infinitum

Low weight = good for Drone, Gimbal, Remote location work.

If boot up sequence is more like DryOs (*) - this could also be more of a doc camera.

* : When Canon DryOs starts up - it initialises all components in a phased approach.
GUI is almost instantaneously available when the Canon device is switched on.
Canon Storage device comes 'online' at a later point, and does NOT lock out GUI use.
In the case of Red F/W - perhaps something similar could be utilised during I^2 startup -
especially as there is already RED menu functionality to enable/disable menu branches
and for retrospective updates to those branches to be sent out over RedLink.

Well, the first thing is the 14.8 Volt output of Redvolts versus the 7.4 Volt output of the Canon BPs not being able to even turn the camera on.

Komodo is a whole different ecosystem and has significantly lower power draw compared to DSMC or DSMC2. This whole camera is very much in a place RED hasn't built anything for yet when it comes to power, accessories, size, price, etc. That's why I'm so curious about what the sensor can do and what the camera itself can do.

Me too. There's a lot of opportunity and the mechanics do not seem difficult (just got mine)

OK, i get it now, I apologize Phil and Jarred, I think you are making the right battery choice here. I have never dealt with a canon C series camera and probably never will, so I was basically fully unaware these even existed, i thought they ran on some larger lp canons or something. Though the Sony L series seems to be on the back of every on board monitor on set, now im wondering why. One of the reasons i dont want to own a more professional camera anymore is the size and weight of a case of V mounts, so this could be a welcome change. still dont know if its for me yet but time will tell. My personal equipment is basically for personal projects and favors. being a DP in LA is like having a pickup truck, you get the call and you have to help a friend out.
one thing i would love for this camera that would set it apart is not needing a monitor, for settings or anything, Id rather a small compact or built in wireless EVF, maybe even Hasselblad style. and the settings for recording just super simple, like 4 little on camera buttons that control everything. thats my wish!

If I were to offer you a camera that is less than 3lbs, shoots 4K at 48fps r3D, has 4K output through SDI at a total shooting package of less than $8k USD would that be something you are interested in?

Yes, Bob, I think I would be interested in that.

Definitely my next gimbal Cam. Assuming image quality and DR are up to par, which is to be expected. At least 4K 48fps is needed which looks like it’s going to be that or better. And I’m willing to bet I’ll be able to control the camera with Fool Control so if all that is the case than anything else is gravy. This is good.

Touche. Granted, two coulda been connected in series to get 14.8v. Also doesn't explain why, if left to sit for 3~4 weeks, RVs loose 33% of their holding capacity... but I digress.

I'm hopeful that Komodo is a good indication that DSMC3 will be far more power friendly as well (both in terms of draw and in terms of battery options).

Anyone who travels for work feels this way at some point. DSMC1 and 2 brains aren't that big or heavy, but rigged to shoot (even minimally) they balloon up so fast. A substantial portion of that is the amount of battery they require.

The first time I used a Scarlet was with a fresh RV in the sidehandle (just brain+sidehandle+monitor+EF 50mm) and I was admittedly quite pumped about it lasting over 30mins. Three weeks later, the RVs only lasted for like ~15mins (2mins of which is wasted on boot time)... was definitely less pumped about that. :D

Don’t know about Komodo, but one BP 5400 mah will run my old GL2 for at least four hours of near continuous shooting. Given its age, CCD circuitry and tape transport I would not expect it to be as power efficient as current hardware but intensive processing requirements could offset that.

Very cool. I've seen some griping over the form factor but the only thing I'm seeing is a replacement for the Raven in terms of weight and on the fly usability. Can't wait to hear about the sensor and see some images.

If its light enough for the ronin S then it’s an immediate purchase! So I’m guessing it’s controlled by hydrogen since I didn’t see any controls?
