  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Not to mention who wants an untested media card like that? Give it some time and some time for that $$$ to drop. Also, how will offload be any faster if what your offloading to is bottlenecked? Everything needs to get faster and as far as I know, most people aren't running NVME 2.0 drives for offload.

CFexpress 2.0 runs on NVMe 1.3, Type A 1 pcie3-lane, Type B 2 pcie3-lanes and Type C 4 pcie3-lanes, the main difference between CFexpress 2.0 and m.2 drives is the more robust connector of the CFexpress 2.0.
The biggest problems of CFAST and CFexpress 2.0 is throttling, because of the heat generated during continues write, the aluminium housing of a MiniMag is also a heatsink.
 
Hey Jarred, Have you thought about XQD media? If this is a potential higher end consumer camera, Best Buy...regularly carries thes cards for the Nikon stills camera....
 
This is such a great idea. The RF mount is the future of canon . Glad Red is onboard.
The fast RF zooms are Ziess Otis good and you're basically getting variable primes .
And, the RF primes are right in there with leica's best still lenses .
I don't know of any other camera manufacturer building a camera with an RF mount .
I just so excited about this. Its going to get good.

XQD media?

I'm not Jarred, but I got a lot of POV from using various camera systems day to day.

I did a moderate dive over at H4Vuser on the topic, but there's a few things to note regarding XQD just on the business and performance side of things. I'll jump in here too. Performance first.

First and foremost, we as motion picture peeps are really interested in the Sustained Write and Read speeds. Not the more often published Burst Data Rates (Sequential) as they typically look better on the marketing side of things (what you typically see on the sticker on the media). I'll focus primarily on the writing side of things as reads are typically always faster and we are mostly concerned to how fast we can push data onto a card.

Firstly, Sony doesn't publish the Sustained Write speeds, so you've got to grab yourself some current gen G-Series XQD media which states "Writes 400 MB/s Burst". However, running disk speed checks reveals Sustained Writes are <= approximately 250MB/s.

Current compact recording media landscape as of what's available in 2019, Sustained Writing:
- CFast 2.0 = approx 490MB/s
- XQD G-Series = approx 250MB/s

So yes, CFast is significantly faster when it comes to read world data rates right this second. This is with the current fastest media available on the market and you can pretty easily test this for yourself these days.

XQD does and will support future CFexpress PCIe 3X, but we've got a handsome amount of time before that really exists, much of that focus is likely Q3/Q4 2020 even, and that will be still the early days. The media is out there and cameras even have media bays with it waiting on firmware updates, but a lot of stuff is getting sorted on the "behind the scenes" side of things in terms of stability, power, and heat management.

And because media is a hot topic these days, i'll go a bit deeper. The Maximum Sustain Write is the number we care about, but when people are looking to write data to these tiny fast cards there's a lot to take into account.

- Media Manufacturing/Manufacturer Variances
- Performance at Higher Temperatures
- Performance at Lower Temperatures
- Ideal Provisioning to avoid Buffer Errors
- Diminishing Performance Over Media Lifespan

So more or less, when a camera company taps into any media type they are *hopefully* testing all this out and figuring out what the fastest possible data rate is to safely record our work. Typically with flash media I've noticed manufacturers like to stay a fair amount under the top rated sustained speeds likely due to media variances and all that, perhaps the temperatures involved with a full day of shooting in the sun. My analogy on H4Vuser was it's sort of like driving a car loaded up with a bunch of fragile cargo in a 75mph zone, it's likely going to be more ideal to drive around 50mph to ensure your cargo gets there safely. That also allows for you to be trusted to do additional cargo trips and feel good about your ride over and over again.


The the point of the business side of things, XQD is primarily Sony media and the two other camera companies focused on that media type also utilized various Sony technologies like sensors within their cameras. Just something to look at when you think about Nikon, PhaseOne, etc. Not a bad thing, love my A7rII and likely grabbing the IV, but it's interesting that XQD is even absent from that upcoming camera.

Im also not sure what the optimum IPD or what the calculations look like for capturing full H4V (no extrapolation) with four imagers, but maybe the form factor not only gets us the 2D pocket cam most of us have been wanting, but also a non-beam splitter version of an H4V capture rig that we saw the stereo prototype of at the Hydrogen event.

I could definitely be trying to make this thing solve too many problems. All i want is a 2D "pocket" cam, but the form factor kept the gears turning in my head today for some reason.
 
I am with Phil 100% on the sustained write speed concept.
I've mentioned it on H4Vuser that since we are probably looking at REDCODE or a variant of it for shooting with the Komodo, we wouldn't need sustained speeds higher than 120-240MB/S from the media.
CFast or CFast 2.0 seems like the best, most reliable and most sensible choice for Komodo!

There is A LOT of potential with what is looking like a rather compact form factor!
And even at the maximum 4" for the Horizontal dimension of Komodo (most likely less!) we are looking at the ideal 4 camera (or more) non-beamsplitter setup rig for multi-view displays.
I've done a lot of 3D and VFX setups with 4-view in mind and successfully delivered rather compelling content for Holopix and other Hydrogen One targeted video content over the past few months.

I am looking forward to maybe even getting 4 Komodos with matching lenses to rig together and set up a multi-view rig.
Ideally you just treat them as sets of 2 with every camera beginning at the closest distance to eachother and then going by the rule of 1 by 1/2.
That suggests that the "Center" Right and Left pair would have the distance between them increased by 1 unit while the "Far" Right and Left cameras would see the distance from their respective Center Right and Center Left cameras increased by 1/2 unit.
That is a sustainable IOD to have a "lookaround" effect while avoiding extremes.
It's worked great for the Hydrogne One display.

At the moment I am experimenting with a rail-based rig to attach 2 Hydrogen One devices and shoot 2 sets of H4V Pro (2x1) shots and align & compose them for a Q4V (2x2) shot that would allow for maximum depth.
 
Wow. Times have changed. RED effectively announces a new sensor and basically all that gets talked about for 11 pages are lens mounts and recording media.

Only because this plays a big part of the small camera form factor.
 
Coming from the 5DSr and a number of 1D, 1Ds and 1Dx cameras, the <2 pound spec fits nicely with my shooting style.
I'd love for it to have a FF sensor, but an S35 would work just as well!
If it could do 8K or 6K at <10fps (effectively a burst mode for DSLRs) in FF and then crop the sensor for 24fps and ultimately 4K @ 60 fps, it would kill many birds with one stone!!!!!!!!

I'm imagining that a side-handle of sorts where a small battery would fit, would be one of the first accessories I'd buy!
If it was a GDU cowboy-style one, even better!!!
V-Mount option on the back would be welcome for longer shoots, or even a belt mounted V-Mount with a Lemo attachment can work.

Integrating with the Hydrogen family can add multiple connectivity options, potentially opening it up for syncing with multiple Komodos, offering HDMI via the Hydrogen USB-C output.

Got many VFX related ideas to test and try.....
Can't wait to get my hands on my new pet(s)!!!

If it were just about numbers, the Alexa should have died 10 years ago. The Sony Venice will be ok, don’t worry.

Would like to see some concrete data that the RF zooms are on par with the Zeiss Otis line, I find it hard to believe.
Same is valid for the RF primes vs. leica best still lenses.

The best stills lens I've seen till today is the Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM with a rather big margin to any other lens.

Within 2 years time everything will be different since they just found the solution for spherical aberration.

That it does. But we're really talking about three things: a new sensor, a new mount, and a new, smaller body. For most (all?) other manufacturers, this would be a single entity.

RED, however, has a sensor swapping program. It seems a reasonable assumption that this new sensor would also find its way into the unified DSMC2 bodies.

I'm surprised at the lack of conversation about where a new sensor fits into the existing lineup and what it means (if anything) for the unified body, mounts and lenses people already have.

More concerned about power consumption... ~2lbs is good. But <20w draw is better, since it means a handle battery can power it for an hour+ and it’ll still be super light/tight (as soon as you need an AB or Vmount portability drops/weight skyrockets.)

...Basically hoping for a “RED Mavo LF” at ~$6k... That’d be awesome.
