  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Damn....he’s onto me.

Oh!! You have changed the design of the power button!

Yeah man.. There have been lots of little updates and changes. You guys are part of the process, watching the process.

Apologies if this has been covered before. I know Komodo is not an A cam, but will it have TC/Genlock capabilities? Even with an added module of some sort?

Absolutely, was just curious if they were planning to make it a priority to boot faster than the DSMC2 cameras. I concur, it'd be great if it fired up nice and quick!

Fast boot cinema camera doesn’t make sense. When she’s all booted up, gotta roll to get her warm and then blackshade.

~ Question IS would it be possible to have different front plates for KOMODO ? (in the future) ? @Jarred Land or is it super integral to the whole camera ?

Please and thankyou.

What is the "Proper name" for the front plate / bulk head on the front of the KOMODO camera ?

Some Medium Format Cameras have the sensor board attached to a front block so if you take that block off the sensor comes with it. (connected via a ribbon cable).

With Komodo ~ Can't completely "Grok" how the chassis / box etc. goes together ? Clever and intriguing seams and bolts and screws etc.

Trying to figure out what's connected to what , "Knee bone connected to the thigh bone, thigh bone connected to the..." .

If you grab that front "bulk head" is the sensor board most closely coupled to the bottom plate of Komodo ? (via a fancy angle bracket - I seem to remember that some of the earlier RED cameras had this really beefy assembly for the sensor / sensor board + back focus adjustment .).

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I really like that the KOMOD seems more symmetrical (about it's vertical axis ), than most cameras i.e. its not super biased Right handed or left handed... Munging cameras side by side that's a great help. Doesn't have a million buttons all over it and seems you can grab it many different ways. Cleaner to engineer with / integrate in an unobstructed way (unlike most cameras out there (at any price.)).

- For some applications it's best to grab hold of the "Thing" that's most closely coupled to the sensor for rigidity and high precision and repeatability... especially for different positions and orientations + various accelerations/Gs/ mild shocks / getting knocked about.

well great wait n see..kozmik

Maybe there is still a chance that they'll put these power and Rec buttons on the left side of the brick, for shoulder mount and Ronin S operators... Swap with the audio I/O?

I hope the great Jacques Jouffret who shot the tests talked to Jarred about that. Maybe one of the "little changes"?

But I think it might be too late already, anyway I'll survive.

Aye, indeed .

Cool piece of kit in your avatar there @Jim Kozmik

Big picture, does or will KOMODO have a future beyond first release ?

If there's a lot of demand will RED keep investing and supporting that line ?

If RED gets completely mauled tech support wise etc. could or would RED set up a separate entity for KOMODO and KOMODO applications and extensions etc. and invest in KOMODO II / III etc.

Or is KOMODO both beginning and EOL ?

Wanted to touch down on a few topics:

Stormtrooper Komodo

Jarred already has his:

Media Cards

Just want to provide some insight on media cards in general.

If we're looking at CFast and CFexpress range style cards they have a printed max read and write speed on them. Almost always this refers to the burst speed read/write and provides not much info on what we as filmmakers care about.

What we do care about is Sustained Reads/Writes. That generally informs us of what the media can actually do and how that speed can be utilized in a camera.

But there's more. Flash Media behaves differently at different points in it's life as well as under different temperature conditions. And you need to also provide a little more room when figuring out what you can do due to individual media variance.

This is a fun thing because on the web most media tests are pretty short and sweet, but never under long term study nor varying conditions. Sort of the reason why companies do so many stress tests on stuff like.

We're discovering a lot on the latest generation of CFexpress cards and they do get bloody hot. They are a faster media for sure than CFast, but I'm going to be curious to see how 1-3 months in on rigorous shooting conditions treats them. I suspect this is why the C500 MK II and FX9 don't exactly hit anything close to the max sustained read/writes. But that's just a hunch.

Powering Komodo

At the moment it's Canon BP. And yes you can use a V-Lock plate to Lemo cable adapter to Komodo for real long runtimes. I'm not 100% sure, but I think a V-Mount adapter could be made to slap on the booty of the Komodo which would pair well w/ the newer GDU batteries that just dropped today and they are nearly exactly 4 inches tall. The other real gain there is longer uptime as well as crazy concepts like shark fins and all that for insane battery life without cables involved. If that's gonna be a thing I hope that's ready around launch.

Monitoring/B]

I think it's a stay tuned thing for now. Everybody is seeing the SDI cable solutions, but we have yet to see a pogo driven concept. I imagine that will be the next big drop from Jarred, but who knows, could be other stuff.

@David G ^^^ not sure if this part of the thread helps you or not ?

Click the double white blue arrows in the blue box next to the veneralble Holland's name... (you know the drill etc.)

Combing through the later part of this thread I'm not sure if I'm loosing my sh*t (#SniffyMcAdderall) or whether certain "Peeps" self deleted some posts ? There were some good posed questions that would take quite a bit of time to carefully unpack... Re: Doco Applications versus odd Sony offerings etc. (I'm sure it's there) and I think Jarred answered a CF question tooooo.

nope...

But Jacques ( and of course Bay ) gave a ton of great input over the last few days.

This "test" was incredibly valuable... Komodo was right at home throwing down nicely side by side with it's big brothers.

[empahsis added].

That's super exciting... Trying not to get tooooo super excited :-)

That's KEY - global shutter and professional quality imagery / color space-decent DR / R3d / "Red code" capabilities.

It seems that with a bit of planning and a smidge of budget that "Good light" can be made to happen ~ Maybe I'm a fuddy duddy but seems that a lot folks select cameras based on really adverse shooting conditions and bad light ? I get Gemini's appeal that seems more "Special" .

In photography light and planning is everything... Even supposedly capturing that seemingly impromptu "Moment". "Moving pictures" usually requires a lot more planning.

I own an FS7 and typically work with rented cameras (Red/Arri/Venice) for non-doc stuff with a little budget. The FX9 and C500 II both are very attractive as potential upgrades, on the one hand; on the other, last year I nearly pulled the trigger on a Scarlet-W. But I've been holding off on a decision until there's been a chance to really evaluate Komodo.

They're all quite different cameras-- but are part of the same discussion about investment as an owner-operator. Setting aside my thoughts on full frame, I see the FX9 as a nice direct upgrade to the FS7 (lots of image upgrades at an attractive price, timecode, etc.), and the C500II as better able to play a bit both in doc and narrative/commercial world due to the availability of a higher res RAW workflow. With the FX9, I'd still be renting for most narrative stuff. But how often would the C500II be billable as a replacement for a Red or Arri, or would I still always be renting-- and with a more expensive camera that you can't just throw up on your shoulder the way you can an FS7? So, while a lot about the Komodo remains a question mark, I'm definitely one of those indie filmmakers interested in testing Komodo as an A-cam on the type of job where I'm currently renting a Scarlet-W or 6k Dragon. I'm excited about the idea of being able to offer Red's proven capabilities in the narrative/commercial world (top-tier s35 image quality, modularity, post workflow) for an investment under $10k-- and with the benefit of a global shutter.
With this in mind, I personally care less about built-in ND than how secure the mount is when used with PL lenses, less about lack of dual ISO than image quality at base ISO, less about HDMI ports than SDI ports that are easy to access and practical power solutions. And I'm eager to learn about the codecs and compression options-- and how they play out in the real world.
Looking forward to learning about this stuff with all of the rest of you...

HA, found it !

These threads move fast and deep ! lol.

This is a good post ^^^^ but has a ton of things compressed into a small space to unpack as it were as it's pretty relevant.

First thing comes to mind riffing of also what @Andrew Dease is posing also...

Odd combing through the specs for the Sony FX9 that it's a 6k sensor but they don't let you have access to that 6K raw file / image.

Sony used the term "Upsampling" but surely it's downsampling ? ~ Even the B&H website states that the "resolution" for FX9 is like 3.something K ?

scratching my head on that one ?

-FX9 lot more expensive but is traditional camera with lots of buttons and crap all over it and quite wide and not so much to engineer with / hack. + not so 6K ish ????

But nice if that's 100% your bag / thing.

Block Utility Camera (Like what Phil Holland kinda types Komodo as ) is a different horse for a different course - yet perhaps more versatile... ?

@M Harvey (if you are still "tuned in", I think there are some really good applications for KOMODO on the documentary format / side of things especially where having a shoulder mounted camera would be kinda in your face / not appropriate for a more sensitive situation or interview. I've always liked documentary film makers and interviewers that were able to put the camera low and to one side and the interviewer is forward of that but having a "light touch" in terms of single camera interview style.

I've been lurking on this thread since it's conception.

I migrated here from H4Vuser I have to say I am super impressed with what is being teased.

Hydrogen is still a wild ride; excited to see it paired with my komodo in a few months.

One thing I don't see much discussion on anymore is a Stills mode for Komodo. Any chance that is still canon?

Greatly looking forward to all of the news in the next few weeks, you have me at the edge of my seat :)

I don't want to spam up the joint nor over post ~ Tooooo laaaaate (face palm). [Apologies for length.].

I'm not sure what direct connection / connectivity KOMODO has for HYDROGEN. (per say)…

But with KOMODO'S possibilities global shutter and synching that stereo / 3d type applications should possible*. + various digital extensions thereof.

Theoretically it would be possible to author re-sample output / readability for HYDROGEN / LEIA type device and also of course other 3d/ S3d stereo 3d and VR based outputs.

Although HYDROGEN "Project" may be shorter lived than anticipated the NEED for HYDROGEN like capabilities and NEED for RED quality imagery hasn't gone away. + NEW RED (implemented) Global shutter being a very big deal for that.

So at least from my corner of the Universe HYDROGEN project thematically (very very broad strokes) has been very much in line with things I / we (my little ship / group) have been working on diligently for more than 15 years.

In spite of the DSMC moniker and concept and I'm not sure that there would be anything obstructive with KOMODO to capture single stills or very short bursts ? Even though it's not specifically broken out NOT STILLS (moving image Camera) , :biggrin5: ? (shrugging shoulders) [Maybe I'm 100% wrong on that ? in terms of decoding stills real time on/ in camera , but seems the wireless capability may have a lot to offer and maybe Apps on the HYDROGEN for more advanced interrogation of decoded imagery ?]

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

* There are lenses that have dual exit pupils and single entrance pupils that could work as narrow base separation stereo but HYDROGEN kinda already has that covered. TWO KOMODOs synched side by side on a nice rig precision built and aligned + complimentary optics would work very nicely also. + software , and if you like mirror rigs etc. KOMODO should be easy to implement as well.

** [Separate note]: Deeper issues with 4 cameras and resampling for maximum range of apparent depth that a LEIA display can produce ---> Kinda OT for this thread, but doable if some one really wants that.

Certainly a lot can be done with multiple cameras arranged variously. Again software / application dependent.

There are a lot of applications for KOMODO and 3d / VR / CG/ CGI broad applications + better VFX capabilities for more conventional workflows / capabilities as well [KOMODO being a more cost effective test bed for that].

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The key question is will the original "Spirit" for KOMODO be upheld / preserved or will much of those ideas wants and capabilities be removed or scrubbed out ? I'm leaning to the former given the form factor and ability to sych properly / genlock + pretty solid build geometry (seems).

Gateway to the digital domain with world class imagery ? Orrrr will that be "Blocked" ? I don't think so … But you don't know until you know (or have a few in hand lol and figure out who's fix'n to do you in lol).
