This is the basic issue, here. No one can, or should, fault RED for circumstances beyond their control. But, the lack of transparency, the changing story coming from RED, leaves me distrustful of their integrity and care for their customer. Given the cost of acquisition, RED should be much more careful with how they treat customers. If their honesty is questionable, I would run from purchasing a RED.
Ordered from a Local "Standard" RED dealer on Nov. 14th as well. Was told I was on a pre-order list. Still have yet to get the camera. I ordered just the body. The wait continues and the patience thins.
It’s arrived yesterday! I’m happyI ordered and paid the Komodo production pack in November 14. The delivery time was designated 8-10 weeks.
No one has ever sent me a single letter. Eight weeks later, I wrote to Red on my own, when their move was over, I received an answer that the expected date of dispatch was 02.20.2021.
Unfortunately, on 02.20.21 I did not receive the camera, and again contacted Red myself.
This time I got the answer that my camera will be available by the end of March. it's awful that the company does not even inform about such huge delays and disruptions in delivery and the buyer has to write letters on his own.
I'm in the middle of a situation where I have no idea what to do. has spent around 15k plus on equipment for the komodo. I used Sony, so I replaced all the equipment. bought the camera through a standard dealer and I hear absolutely nothing. I'm now in the 16th week people say it takes to get the camera. I fear it may take longer since the dealer I bought it from apparently does not get any cameras from RED. Very strange that there is no info from anyone about what is really happening.

Red has taken down the "add to cart" button for komodo and I think informed everyone that there is problems with the delivery lines, corona and other things causing delays. Likely its difficult to predict how fast they can deliver to those that already ordered, especially as there is local dealers involved. In theory I guess the dealers could take up more preorders than red could ever deliver. When red where only selling trough their website there was simply just one way to source a camera and everyone had their order number, sure Peter Jackson and some others where jumping in line but basically most orders where delivered in the same order as they where placed. Now with the dealer, it's quite different, some dealers make sure to have cameras in stock, others order when they get a downpayment from a customer etc. So I guess for red there is no easy way to say when a placed order will be fulfilled.
Ofcrouse frustrating to have to rent when having a camera on order. But renting a komodo without accessories can likely be done at a fairly low cost, or you bite the bullet and order a used camera for a prime price.
Or just give up and cancel orders.Buy something similar with a better viability and go on with your business.
I believe Red is shooting themselves in the foot with Komodo. For many the box that Komodo checked was global shutter. Rumor has it that the new Canon R1 will have global shutter, 8K, Raw and will not overheat as this is their flagship pro model. It will also feature Quad Pixel AF and a 85MP sensor. As a 1D series equivalent, the R1 will be built like a tank. For many, the R1 will appear as a better option for a travel friendly, rugged and high quality capture device. In many respects, the R1 has the potential to out class Komodo for only a couple thousand more. As more rumors are confirmed, I think we will see the Komodo quickly losing its luster in the eyes of many that are waiting to take delivery. It will be interesting to see how things play out when Komodo is no longer the only game in town with smallish size and global shutter.
...but a certificate of reliability.
Are you building a business based on what will probably come out next?
...and then there will be another, and another, and another. Most people can't even get good images with Komodo, not based on the camera but based on not having the experience or knowledge of photography/cinematography. So they keep buying the next system and the next and so on, but never really learning the system they have and getting good with that first. On top of that, it's not just the sensor and specs you get when buying a camera, but a certificate of reliability. We've heard good things about Canon cameras before and yet they still disappoint.
You know what you get with Komodo, you don't know what you get with the R1.
So far, most systems that have been released in the last four-five years have not resulted in better-looking stuff from people, because camera tech has somewhat stagnated. The diminishing returns have made it so you can get really good material out of the regular Epic Dragon that looks just as good as stuff shot with new cameras, if you know how to handle that camera. The R1 is still a still camera first and foremost and all the focus will be on those areas, video second. If people want reliability in video, why chose a DSLR?
