  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Komodo shipping?

Anyone ordered from local dealers getting theirs? i ordered from a local "standard" dealer on nov. 14th. Still nothing.

This is the basic issue, here. No one can, or should, fault RED for circumstances beyond their control. But, the lack of transparency, the changing story coming from RED, leaves me distrustful of their integrity and care for their customer. Given the cost of acquisition, RED should be much more careful with how they treat customers. If their honesty is questionable, I would run from purchasing a RED.

I worked for a company much like RED a while back. Small manufacturer in a big space where our competition, though many times our size, were not turning out design nor product nearly as premium as ours. This company was not run very well from the top down (I'm not saying this about RED), but the product was so good that we experienced rapid growth anyway. There comes a point when in order to meet rising demand a manufacturer needs a bigger building, a dozen more CNC mills running at least 3 shifts, etc. We're talking many millions of dollars here, and it don't grow on trees. Especially during a pandemic, a company like RED could get quite stuck not being able to fulfill orders because their latest product took off. That's actually a good problem to have, but unless you can pull that capital out of your back pocket yesterday it's still very much a problem, especially if you start burning suppliers because you're so late paying invoices. Where WE went wrong (the leadership of my former employer that is) was promising ship dates that we knew we couldn't fulfill instead of just leveling with our customers that because our product kicked so much ass we were having trouble keeping up with demand, but we are addressing it.

IME you can even tell someone you're a recovering crackhead as soon as you meet them and they'll be cool with that because they knew up front...a lot more anyway than some much lesser offense they found out you're hiding from them later on.

Ordered from a Local "Standard" RED dealer on Nov. 14th as well. Was told I was on a pre-order list. Still have yet to get the camera. I ordered just the body. The wait continues and the patience thins.

You are lucky, didn't got any answer from the local dealer from last monthly info mail request. Thinking to give up soon and ask for a refund even if I've already bought many accessories...

We ordered on November 24th direct from red. Called today and got a March 10th ship date.

We shall see.

I ordered and paid the Komodo production pack in November 14. The delivery time was designated 8-10 weeks.
No one has ever sent me a single letter. Eight weeks later, I wrote to Red on my own, when their move was over, I received an answer that the expected date of dispatch was 02.20.2021.
Unfortunately, on 02.20.21 I did not receive the camera, and again contacted Red myself.
This time I got the answer that my camera will be available by the end of March. it's awful that the company does not even inform about such huge delays and disruptions in delivery and the buyer has to write letters on his own.
It’s arrived yesterday! I’m happy

Talking to a sales rep today that is a RED premium/premier(whatever) dealer and they said RED has told them that lead time on a Komodo is 16 weeks(Four Months). So if you order one today(March), the earliest you could expect it would be July.

I'm in the middle of a situation where I have no idea what to do. has spent around 15k plus on equipment for the komodo. I used Sony, so I replaced all the equipment. bought the camera through a standard dealer and I hear absolutely nothing. I'm now in the 16th week people say it takes to get the camera. I fear it may take longer since the dealer I bought it from apparently does not get any cameras from RED. Very strange that there is no info from anyone about what is really happening.

Rent till it arrives? You can get a Komodo at Lensrentals for relatively cheap.

Red has taken down the "add to cart" button for komodo and I think informed everyone that there is problems with the delivery lines, corona and other things causing delays. Likely its difficult to predict how fast they can deliver to those that already ordered, especially as there is local dealers involved. In theory I guess the dealers could take up more preorders than red could ever deliver. When red where only selling trough their website there was simply just one way to source a camera and everyone had their order number, sure Peter Jackson and some others where jumping in line but basically most orders where delivered in the same order as they where placed. Now with the dealer, it's quite different, some dealers make sure to have cameras in stock, others order when they get a downpayment from a customer etc. So I guess for red there is no easy way to say when a placed order will be fulfilled.

Ofcrouse frustrating to have to rent when having a camera on order. But renting a komodo without accessories can likely be done at a fairly low cost, or you bite the bullet and order a used camera for a prime price.

Or just give up and cancel orders.Buy something similar with a better viability and go on with your business.

Unfortunately that's where I am with this.

While Komodo would make an outstanding B cam to my Dragon, the way RED has treated this whole backorder/shipping situation has soured my view of them. I don't think anyone here has unreasonable expectations and heaven knows we have all been impacted by Covid, but RED has had WAY too long to get out in front of this situation with some good, solid communication. I just hope they can learn from this. Maybe if Komodo is actually available in 6 months I'll pick one up. For now though, I'm not playing this game any more...I have work to do.

I believe Red is shooting themselves in the foot with Komodo. For many the box that Komodo checked was global shutter. Rumor has it that the new Canon R1 will have global shutter, 8K, Raw and will not overheat as this is their flagship pro model. It will also feature Quad Pixel AF and a 85MP sensor. As a 1D series equivalent, the R1 will be built like a tank. For many, the R1 will appear as a better option for a travel friendly, rugged and high quality capture device. In many respects, the R1 has the potential to out class Komodo for only a couple thousand more. As more rumors are confirmed, I think we will see the Komodo quickly losing its luster in the eyes of many that are waiting to take delivery. It will be interesting to see how things play out when Komodo is no longer the only game in town with smallish size and global shutter.

...and then there will be another, and another, and another. Most people can't even get good images with Komodo, not based on the camera but based on not having the experience or knowledge of photography/cinematography. So they keep buying the next system and the next and so on, but never really learning the system they have and getting good with that first. On top of that, it's not just the sensor and specs you get when buying a camera, but a certificate of reliability. We've heard good things about Canon cameras before and yet they still disappoint. And then we wait for the next.

People thought the Canon R wasn't really that good for still photography compared to the others like Sony. I bought it and tested the hell out of it so that I knew how it behaves. Still get better shots with it than most people who just sold, bought a sony, sold, bought an R5.

You know what you get with Komodo, you don't know what you get with the R1. Are you building a business based on what will probably come out next? Clients and the work doesn't really give a shit. It's the work that is important. Buy what exists today, then when a new system comes out that outperformes on all levels, you can make the choice to invest in new gear.

So far, most systems that have been released in the last four-five years have not resulted in better-looking stuff from people, because camera tech has somewhat stagnated. The diminishing returns have made it so you can get really good material out of the regular Epic Dragon that looks just as good as stuff shot with new cameras, if you know how to handle that camera. The R1 is still a still camera first and foremost and all the focus will be on those areas, video second. If people want reliability in video, why chose a DSLR?

Don't know about you, but I cant even get a reliable ship date. Based on that, I'd hate for the thing to need service.

If you were not one of the first in line ordering Komodo, yes, that's exactly what you're doing.

If you can’t get a good image out of any of the modern mirrorless bodies, I’m afraid owning a Red will likely do you more harm than good. For the vast majority of shooters, the handholding is a big plus. We’ve all seen lots of badly shot, badly graded Komodo footage. So there is no replacement for skills and talent. But if you actually want to receive the camera that you ordered you mighty need to look outside of Red. The main site removing the option to purchase inspires zero confidence... Is Komodo discontinued? Is there a defect that caused production to cease? I also concur with the comments, that this may be a foreshadowing of what to expect when it comes to service. Do most customers have these concerns about Canon? Probably not. They know Canon has “Pro” level after sales service. The silence from Red is deafening, all the while Nero fumbles about with his book of matches.

I don’t know what you mean by, “ You know what you get with Komodo, you don't know what you get with the R1.” The camera is not yet even announced, so naturally it’s all speculation at this point. But that too will change.

Ordered our Komodo kit on Nov 7, 2020 from B&H and am still waiting. Anybody else having flashbacks to the Raven clusterf*ck? It’s shocking to me that RED didn’t learn from that situation that they need to over-communicate, even if they’re communicating things we don’t want to hear. If that didn’t teach them, nothing will. I fully understand that all manufacturers are having serious issues delivering right now (still have a few monitors and lights on back order from SmallHD and Apurture, so it’s not just a RED thing) but they really should prioritize communication during this entire ordeal.

Really hoping for some movement soon.

Ordered from B&H on Dec. 5th, just shipped, arriving tomorrow in US
