  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Komodo (Production) has finally landed.

Really impressive to honor the Hydrogen discount, says a lot about the company.

It depends, I've lost my phone. And the hydrogren team gave me NO as an answer. It looks like I need to have the phone on me to get the Emei number in order to apply for the discount. I found this very unfair, the phone could have been stolen it would have been the same.
I gave them the original serial and the proof of purchase. Not working. Anyone have a solution ?
I 've been a long time RED customer and want to spend my money on KOMODO. Any advice ?

I believe it was known for a long time that Hydrogen owners would get a discount so on you for not keeping tabs on a piece of kit that cost over a 1K, it's not their responsibility. Then they are faced with giving multiple discounts on one phone if the original phone was 'accidentally' lost or sold.

What EF to RF adapter actually comes with the package? In the photo on the website it's the Canon one with pins [electronic] that costs $99 [MFR #2971C002], in the description it's a 'RF to EF Mechanical Adapter' which could be a passive adapter that costs $20. So which is it?

The IMEI number of your phone, which is used for the discount, is also located on the box your phone came in. So if you still have the box it came it, you should be able to use that number for the discount.

Except, as far as any other country, you will pay double tax. You won't get US tax back, you will probably pay the US tax and then the import tax and your country's tax on top of that. That last tax is deductible, but not the US or import tax.

There is no "US sales Tax"(although some things like fuel, alcohol and firearms are federally taxed). Sales tax in the US is a state and local(county/city) tax, meaning it's assessed based on where you live or purchase something*. There are places here where people pay zero sales tax. For example, if you lived in the US in the state of Delaware, you would not pay any sales tax and the Komodo would only cost you $5,995. But if you live in the state of Florida, it's going to ultimately cost you $6,354.70, because they have a 6% sales tax. It can also vary slightly within the same state, as counties and cities can add their own sales tax on top of the state sales tax. For example, the sales tax just a few cities away in another county is .25% higher than where I live only 20 minutes away.

*It can also vary depending on if you buy something in-person or on-line/via phone, etc. For example, if I lived in a location with no sales tax, but physically went to a store located in an area with sales tax, like Best Buy, and bought a TV to take home, I'm going to be charged the sales tax for the are where the store is located. But if I stayed at home where there is no sales tax and ordered it on-line and had it shipped to me, there would be no sales tax charged.

And on the flip side, if I lived in an area with sales tax and physically went to a store in an area with no sales tax, they are not going to charge me sales tax(although legally you are responsible for reporting and paying what the taxes would have been) and if I made a purchase on-line, I will be charged the sales tax that corresponds to where I live. And this is all a fairly recent thing, as most in the US have gotten away with not paying sales tax on on-line/out-of-state purchases for years. Now most states require/force on-line and out-of-state merchants making $X sales to a state per year to charge, collect and submit the sales tax to the states. There are still large merchants, like Adorama, that are somehow sidestepping this(or just blatantly ignoring it), but a lot/most have fallen in-line and are in-compliance.

I think what Christoffer meant by mentioning double sales tax is the 1000 dollar VAT that was added during the purchase of Komodo. Added to this the 6% import duty in to Sweden. On top of that the Swedish 25% VAT, calculated from the sum of the sales amount, the US VAT, the shipping cost and the 6% import duty.
VAT is charged locally in the destination country and (in this case) shall not be charged in the US.

Okay guys, i got a update about the order issue.
I've been in contact with brady, david, clark and jarred since the release. Because I got stuck in the first 5min of the release with the ordering process for a shipment to Switzerland and the VAT was not deducted.

I don't know if it will help in the rest of the EU countries, but Brady had to do a manual order for me to make it work. It doesn't work for my account in the online shop yet.

You may also contact the support, but consider that they are very busy due to the situation (fewer staff present, etc.).

I hope that this way can help one or the other to order a Komodo.
Many thanks to the entire RED team, especially Brady for the very great support during this frustrating situation!

My experience as well, Brady and David has been of great help and working their ass off getting things done. So huge thanks to the UK department for helping everyone!

Is anybody interested in purchasing my IMEI discount? We can split it or so.
I have been burned enough by the hydrogen experience to limit my enthusiasm of getting a new RED camera....
I expressed it in the past, H1 was supposed to be something than never came, and Komodo is something else that I don’t need.
DM if you are intertested.

Apologies if this has been answered already, but for us Titanium Hydrogen owners who also received the aluminum Hydrogen for free, can we receive the discount on two Komodos, one for each Hydrogen?

That did not work for me. I had to dig up my (unopened) Titanium boxes to get codes that worked.

I have successfully used the code of my free aluminum Hydrogen to redeem the discount. I put my unopened Titanium Hydrogen deep in the closet, it is possible we can receive discount on two Komodos if the codes are different?

You can just try it. Obviously, no person reading this list can make a definitive statement about any one single IMEI number floating around in the universe. If the system accepts it, you are blessed. The end.

A bit off topic but ... could any nice, knowledgable person out there in RedUser world be able to point me in the right direction to any solutions upon how to get my cracked Hydrogen screen repaired (it's so cracked you can't get passed the login screen!).

It would be great to use as a screen and contoller with the Komodo once the Android app is out.

Please Private Message me or reply to me here on this thread with any suggestions, many thanks in advance!

I tried it and it is possible to receive the discount on 2 Komodos using the 2 serial numbers from Titanium and the free Aluminum. I had placed an order in haste when I saw the cameras were available before I had read about putting the IMEI in the coupon box. So my early queue placement doesn't have the discount. I figured it would be easy enough to add that through customer support but as others have noted, this is not possible ("We cannot change the orders at all"). Given Covid and the herculean effort of launching a product in these times, I get it. Systems are in place and I can accept that. I placed a second order with my Titanium IMEI and was considering cancelling the first if a second discount was available. In the end I'm going to keep my original order though because I'm working on some accessory development for Komodo and want to get the camera quickly (and I'm excited to start shooting with it). Anyway, that's why I asked, and it turns out it is possible.

Congrats on the launch Jarred and team. So excited to get my 2 Komodos!

I was also forced to place an order in USD and the $1,012.38 tax was added but is says "Estimated Tax" so I guess (and really hope) it's corrected before invoicing and actual charging? Right now there is only a reservation for the full amount.

Also I wonder what commodity code you assume the Komodo fall under to be charged 6% import duty? As I understand it the import duty from US is 0%.

My order added tax although we do not pay tax for production equipment used in Texas and I am struggling to get it removed. I have never paid tax on a Red purchase until the Komodo. I was told I would have to cancel the order to get the tax removed but may lose the hydrogen credit and my place in line. I was referred to the Hydrogen team (who no longer answers the phone) to find out if I can use the credit on a different order. Not exactly thrilled with the support I'm getting with this purchase but I'm sure Covid has everyone short staffed. I'm trusting that it'll all work out in the end since Red has always taken care of me previously...

That sounds terrible. I take it for granted that RED are going to fix this before actual invoicing. No way I'm going to pay inaccurate tax and I don't understand how RED would justify that in any way, shape or form. Just wrong. And still no official answers here from RED on this matter.

Guys,
Did any of you manage to order something through the website? I have the same error coming again and again at checkout.
I put a couple tickets into support but never got a reply since last Tuesday.
I tried to call them several times today but only had the option to let a message.
I guess with the Covid situation and the release of the Komodo, the all support is more than busy but I'd like to figure out if I should give up on ordering through Red.com and go through a reseller.
