From a Hydrogen email from Jim:

“Additionally, we eventually realized that the original camera module would have to change due to the fact our ODM was not going to competently complete the module that they committed and guaranteed to do. Our best option was to modify the program and bring it back into the RED house. We have completed the new and extraordinary sensor and redesigned the package. Jarred at RED will be posting about Komodo fairly soon. Its capability will vastly exceed the originally planned module. The HYDROGEN One and Two will integrate with this new camera. While it does not replace its big RED brothers, it will certainly be a complimentary camera for cinema grade images at the highest level at lower pricing.“

I bet this is using the c-fast slot that Jarred posted

What do we think the pricing on this will be? $1500-3000 or code RED, hide all statements, shred those papers...

$5k max is my guess but who the heck knows anymore - its the wild west

Its a new sensor so thats exiting. I wish to finally get to use my hydrogene for filmaking. Make sure there is autofocus in this one.

The KOMODO,
Is not a new RED CAM per say, but it is a new Cam system from RED for the HYDROGEN ONE & TWO :)

Well... Jim wrote “The HYDROGEN One and Two will integrate with this new camera“ so my guess is that it’s a new camera (per say) that Hydrogen one and two will integrate with... ;)
Looking forward to some words from Jarred about this :)

Um, yeah he just said it’s a new camera

Like an add on module for a cell phone?

The cell phone is an add on module for the cam given Jims wording.

The cell phone will be the display. Maybe physical connection, hopefully wireless monitoring...which was teased with hydrogen but never delivered.

Maybe bring your own display via android...which would be great.

I stopped using my hydrogen 1 as a phone cause it was becoming unreliable (like so many units) . I might be able to use it with komodo but hydrogen is not a device to rely on. Imagine a monitor on set with an unreliable power button? ( I already got the minimag unable to mount problem slowing me down, dont need another device not coming waking up)

Komodo sounds good, Dragon sensor related. Does Dragon have access to IPP2? I cant recall now.

Exactly,
As per Jim's words so far, we can only speculate that the Komodo is either the name of the NEW Sensor or NEW Camera Module coming from RED for the H1 & H2, meaning that you can either upgrade to the entirely NEW H2 system with the Komodo or simply continue to use the H1 and add only the Komodo system.

Should this "Komodo" system be also a possible Stand Alone new low end RED camera system, can always be also a possibility.

But as of now we can only speculate this was originally created for the Hydrogen and that it will NOT have any other monitoring possibility other than making use of the Hydrogen 1 or 2.

Then again, since RED has always had a way of surprising every one last minute with their specs, I won't be surprise if the Komodo could indeed come out also as an Independent camera system, like a small compact "TRUE Pocket Size" DSMC.

i asked this on jarred's fb post and he said "nope'

That’s not really what you asked tho. You asked if the teaser was a module and not a pocket stand alone... so when he replies “nope” to that question I thought he meant “nope, it’s not a module”... I might be totally wrong tho :)

Yeah that’s what I thought.

Ketch, Jim clearly says above it’s a camera.

I took it was not a module given the question.

um, that's what im saying... i said "So I guess that Instagram tease was the module. Not a pocket stand alone."

and he said nope.

i take that as meaning, what he posted was not the hydrogen camera module, it's something completely differnt and possibly either a stand alone pocket camera or a module for dsmc2... no?

Ahh! I understand. Guess we just see it a bit differently, but who knows what’s correct.
I don’t think the Komodo is a Hydrogen module, but a stand alone camera that the Hydrogen phones can connect to. That’s why I thought the “nope” meant that the picture (with CFast) is not a Hydrogen module, but possibility the Komodo.

- or maybe I’m just confused in the sun and we are saying the same thing. Then I apologize :)

Yes Jake,
Of course it's a camera, I never said it was not, what I mean is that it clearly can be integrated in the Hydrogen One even so specifically created for the Hydrogen Two.

But it could also be very well offered as also a stand alone camera with a different accessory from RED.

It has its own Sensor, and it has its own processing unit, so the Hydrogen One or Two will be a Monitoring device and partial Processing unit, where most likely the Komodo will also be integrated with its own processing unit.

What I would imagine it is like a FLAT out Mirrorless DSLR Compact Camera without a Back LCD, that the Hydrogen mounts on to, and or possibly where a Mini RED Lcd could be used to make a Stand Alone use of the Komodo as a Stand Alone camera.

Recording wise it should and most likely will also have its own Recording Media as well as a Battery Option.
