  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can anybody tell me the crop factor if I use a PL mount with Canon Cine 30-300mm and what its 35mm equivalent would be at 6k

Cheers

Love that tool... Made it so easy to compare to my other cameras :001_cool:

The link wasn't working for me, but according to that same tool the Komodo has a crop factor of 1.33x vs. 36x24mm full-frame.

Yep. I shadow updated formatCompare to reflect the new naming convention of formats found in Komodo.

For those familiar with RED, Komodo is a bit different but also sensical when dealing with formats.

DSMC2 to Komodo formats are as follows:
- FF = 17:9 (DCI 1.9:1)
- 16:9 = 1.78 (UHD 1.78:1)
- WS = 2.40:1 (which is actually 2.37:1 and DCI Scope technically is 2.39:1)

The link does not work for me as well.

It's because it's linking to the old format names. i've swapped those out to how they actually are in camera and in the manual. Sort of my worry about adding the formats before the official release, but no biggy really.

You can give it a whirl here:

And here's just an example of comparing Komodo 6K 17:9 with the Canon C70 max format:
http://phfx.com/tools/formatCompare/formatCompare.cgi?makeA=RED&modelA=Komodo+6K&formatA=6K+17%3A9&makeB=Canon&modelB=C70&formatB=DCI+4K&focalLengths=

Basically I removed all the FF, WS, HD formats because Komodo is 17:9, 2.4:1, and 16:9.

I'd be curious to know if RED will ever create a DSMC2 update to reflect this as I suspect this might be the way things go from here.

Thanks, Phil.

As always you are a great asset on Reduser.

:)

Thanks Phil

Thanks Phil

Such a great tool. Thanks for creating that Phil, and adding Komodo to it. Can’t wait for my 100-400mm to reach 710mm at 4K 60. Best thing about Red’s sensor crop is sports for sure. I’ll be shooting some pro surfing as soon as this thing comes up and this svirtually eliminates the need for a lens extender, which always seemed to negatively effect the image. Anyone have an extender for EF that doesn’t effect the image please let me know. Can’t wait to get this little cine-box.

It seems like compared to the standard photo full frame 3:2, if shot wide via crop down to 17:9 and not using anamorphic, then Komodo is basically x0.75 the size (the crop factor is 1.33 compared to shooting the same aspect on a canon R5). I think the wider sensor is potentially less ideal when shooting anamorphic, at least at the more common 2x and 1.8x (1.33x is the full sensor becomes the 2.4:1 image), and 1.5x would probably be okay, but the good lenses in these ranges like P+S are about double or more the cost of “affordable” anamorphics like Orion’s.

It seems great for shooting spherical tho because with less height you reduce your required image circle which is a big part of why the mft designs are so adaptable.

The one thing I was always unsure of is if there is an actual reference standard for FF in video, the closest comparison seems to be 4perf vs 8 perf image circles, though it’s not exact since it’s not like the red VV sensors and the canon FF and the Venice and the Arri LF sensors are all the same size. My operating assumption is they probably just used photo camera scale cause photos came before video even if s35 was way more common on film cameras, either way I was pleasantly surprised when I learned about the crop as I was expecting more like 1.6. Coming in under 1.4 is quite big for s35.

That said, if they release a VV big brother, even if it stays 6k (though I imagine it would be 8k just cause) I’ll gladly order one to pair up. I’d love to see a VV sensor built on the same basic tech. But I’m sure it’s just a matter of waiting.

No one in the film(movie) or video world ever compared anything to "FF" in stills, until the "DSLR" revolution. Most people that have been shooting since before then don't and tend to understand the relationship between focal length and format(imager size) and how that relates to FoV/AoV. It's largely the people that have come in since and have mostly shot on DSLR's and somehow think that everything is compared to "FF" 35 still cams.

It's a great tool but incorrect for the Canon R5 at 4K DCI and 4K UHD compared to Komodo, haven't checked others.

Fixed. My tool generally prefers the actual pixel readout and I didn't compensate for the scaled 4K image from the 8K readout.

Sure, that’s why I think the most relevant comparison is 4 perf (basically normal s35) and 8 perf (film moves horizontal instead of vertical like s35) and is VERY close to being standard 36x24:

Really the problem is just there are too many variables, as far as what I know tho, what ultimately matters is FoV and DoF.

Also Phil’s tool is fantastic. Helped me make so much more sense of what the Komodo sensor really was. I’m just waiting for the Komodo to be added to the lens data view :P

Thanks @Phil Holland, this tool is great! Curious your thoughts on why the Red Crop Factor site shows different numbers. Komodo 6k 17:9 shows 1.33x with a 35mm still reference on your calculator where as on the red calculator it shows 1.42x.
