  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DRAGON CARBON + Game of Thrones

Woooohaaayyy Insane!!

I hate you and also love you

Jarred.. I was reading things about redcine, RMD, raw files etc. and my EPIC on the Red site, I have to say that I am blown away!! How do you guys come up with this stuff? Forget the Hype and rumors about film & digital because I'm looking at the never ending technical side of these creations. This is not consumer or pro cine.. this is a creation of its own kind, I can't compare the Red one, Epic & Dragon to each other because what they offer is on different levels. This stuff takes time and I'm glad you don't have a set deadline to your work because it takes skills and time to bring these ideas to life. These ideas is an open door for me to create the films I thought weren't possible because I'm not rich...now there is no excuse. As a so called low budget film maker with high budget dreams..I would like to say that I'm proud of you guys for giving me the chance to make my Ideas come to life with your cameras etc..

I work with an autoclave house that makes CF parts for racing bikes, I could form these parts at 1/10 the cost, assembly is a different story.

Hey Bob, your post got my attention because I love the Pilot, but always assumed it would never work with my Epic, even stripped down. I guess you are saying that I'm right, if you factor in the all metal Epic. But if the Carbon Dragon is enough of a shave to make it possible then I would be interested. Can you show me your math? My rational mind needs permission to get excited about this.

Yesterday Jarred walked up and handed me a Carbon Dragon. I resisted the urge to make a run for it ;-)

It is so light you would think it was an empty shell with no boards. Wow.

Build quality is as fabulous as you can imagine. Wow.

It's too bad that precision manufacturing/finishing with Carbon Fiber is so expensive because if the price delta (vs regular Epic Dragon) was $5K instead of $25K (estimated) it would be an easy yes. The magnesium PL mount is icing on the cake.

All I can say is, if you can afford it - you won't be sorry.

Cheers - #19

Its not just the Carbon and the mount.. the bulk of the body and internals are also machined out of magnesium.. which is big part of the expense.

Next time I'm down near RSH I'd love to see how that feels in hand. Shaving a pound and having something like the new REDVOLT XL Module attached might feel alarming close to just holding the regular brain today with a smidge more weight. Which is pretty cool.

I also had the privilege of seeing this beast. It might be the greatest thing that RED has created. With the power of the Dragon and the weight shaved off with carbon and magnesium, it might as well be the best camera out there.

Might there eventually be a dragon to carbon dragon upgrade?

Beautiful camera! Congratulations on it & GOT.

Jarred - any chance of a matching side-handle?
This is for aerial applications where we are powering the camera via REDVOLTs in the side handle...

Cheers

Not sure why anyone would you use REDVOLTS in a side handle for an aerial application instead of Lithium Polymer batteries. I could, however, see using the REDVOLT XL module.

Mark - the gimbal does not allow fitting of the XL REDVOLT - not even with the new compact back plate.
LiPo's are inherently unstable (would not want to see one "going off" anywhere near my camera) - but that aside - there is no "official" - or at least an "officially supported" solution for connecting them to power the camera...
Also - this is for RC aerials - each flight is less then 30 min - so the REDVOLTs are actually perfect for this. Just swap a fresh one for each flight...
And - since this is RC - shaving weight off is very much desirable. Same gimbal is also used as "MOVI" - again the REDVOLTs are perfect for that kind of work and shaving weight off is even more important... ;o)

cool!

I was reading on the launch of the new Surface Pro 2 (core i5 processor) and couldn't help but notice this:

That certainly looks like the Dragon Carbon. In the article they brag on the Surface playing back at full 6k, meaning, Dragon for certain.

Here's the link.
