  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Komodo + DJI RS 2

That would be awesome, maybe somebody from red can tell us if it's doable in the future or it's totally not possible...

It's been awfully quiet from Red on this forum, unfortunately. Not sure if they changed policy to only have a feedback discussion with a smaller group of people or if it's due to the pandemic or whatnot, but I really hope Red would look into this and maybe talk to DJI about it since the RS2 is a very good combo with Komodo and nurturing a collaboration between DJI and Red would be awesome for customers of both.

Agreed

DJI RS 2 | How to Use 3D Focus System

Komodo AF is decent for simple shots, wide lenses, following a subject down a sidewalk etc. for more detailed focus I use an AC, the red control app with an iPad and EF lenses (the Sigma ART look just like the Sigma Cine) but for monitoring I use an SDI TX to the AC's monitor. The monitoring through the RED Control app is still a bit glitchy at this point.

Has anyone experimented with using a bigger antenna on the Komodo to strengthen the wifi signal?

I'm not sure if the antenna is something standard that can be bought anywhere or if it's proprietary, but if it is, Red should definitely sell some antennas with improved range. Not only for stability but for all people who need much longer ranges as well.

I screwed a antenna from a Teradek product on the Komodo, same thread and single pin. it seem like they are pretty universal. But can't be sure. I'll test and get back to ya'll

FOLLOW UP: I tested a longer 4" antenna from a Teradek receiver with the Red Control app and I did indeed get better range. I was playing with the focus wheel and was able to get smoother results from a further distance. in my case about 50' away and through a wall. The stock antenna started to get glitchy at about 30 ft. This was not terribly scientific but I can confirm a standard antenna will work and a longer one seems to work better.

Awesome! Was thinking about the screws, they look like normal screws for modems and routers. There are some antennas that use a more randomized flat surface to capture signals from any direction. Maybe if the shape of the antenna is replaced it could render much of the interferences and hiccups gone. Gonna check this myself as well :)

Possible hardware that exists for Raven Eye cold shoe mount > Vmount?

Possible hardware that exists for Raven Eye cold shoe mount > Vmount?

Just got my RS2 in and patiently waiting for the slew of announced gear coming out from SmallRig and Tilta for this gimbal.

In the meantime, I think a really good solution for an on-gimbal vmount would be to utilize the cold shoe slot underneath the mounting plate. With my Core swx nano 98's, they fit perfectly underneath the mount plate and can easily clear the gimbal arms in motion...

I've looked for the past day and can't seem to find ANY piece of hardware that exists that would be a hot shoe to cheese plate kind of deal. Anyone else thought of this?

I think that a belt-clip V-LOCK would be even better for the entire system. Removing weight from the gimbal and camera helps a lot for some cases of shooting.

A cable hanging from the balanced part of the gimbal kind of ruins the balance. Is it possible to feed the RS2 power up trough the handle, trough the arms of the gimbal?

Seen plenty that is able to do it, but yes, the connectors would be the best way, but they're just USB-C.

Has anyone had the chance to try the Komodo on the RS2 with a vmount powering the camera? I have the Core SWX mount on order but don't know if I'll have to get some BP-955s as well to run it on the gimbal.

Check out Rand's post on the main Komodo thread, about the micro A/B Gold Mounts and bracket. That may keep it small and light enough to work. Although I'm not sure how long you'd want to carry it and you'd probably wanna keep the takes/shots short.

I’ve put a RED Scarlet MX with 16-35 and a 145wH v-mount on rs2 yesterday, works like a breeze. Had to strip the camera down, but a 4500g setup is a breeze for rs2. Thus, see no problem to put a Komodo with a v-mount on it. Probably you should use a longer Manfrotto plate instead of a native one, but it’s def. doable.

With bigger bodies you can’t leave a monitor on the camera, also the ff setup is questionable, but with some lenses it’s doable I suppose. Such a shame there’s no D-tap solution for rs2 yet.
