  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Komodo + DJI RS 2

Lots of things that can improve performance on the RS2. We gone a bit nuts with the 3d printer lately. Made these bits and bobs, that makes huge difference.

new dovetail that is low profile, low weight an offset the camera 35mm to the pasenger side, which allows for bigger heavier setups without having to add roll counter weights. Simply put the camera is placed way to high and way to far to the driver side with the original dove tail that also does not have proper mounting points for counter weights. You want to be able to put your counter weights as far back and down as possible without hitting the roll motor. So preferably you want the weights placed as shown in this video... now here is a small lens in use but a big heavy lens works very well.

Then we also moved power out of the gimbal. Simply it flies way better this way. also the power port on the Komodo is not so well placed, a lemo connector sticks out right where you don't want it, even if you use an angled connector the way we made it we fit the Vaxis Atom and we get Dtap or 2pin lemo out on board, still it does not make the camera longer than if we only had a angled power lemo in the camera. And this way we can fly with any focus motor on board and we can choose to power with Dtap or 2pin lemo. The V power plate we made has 2x 2pin female lemo or 2pin female lemo and female Dtap.

Then we made another V power mount thingy that mounts to the Dji arm. Where a V-lock battery can be mounted and it has, Dtap out, 2pin lemo out and usb out. The usb is nice as it can charge the phone. Kind of needed to have power for the phone if shooting for long days. It can also charge the actual gimbal battery as well so simply all that needs to be swapped power vice during a shooting day is Vlocks. Hate to fiddle with multiple chargers, batteries etc.

Then we also did these little biscuits. Good to have when you want to add power to the vaxis or what ever Vlock Male connector without adding the weight of a battery and also stay slim. It was the iteration before we removed the Vlock back all together from the vaxis. But its still a good solution when not wanting to fiddle with the screws for the vaxis backplate.



Then I did some of these, lightweight mounts for 15 and 12mm rods. it slim enough to sit on the revolva on the passenger. side with the camera moved over. So all weight is to the right. Which is good, it makes it possible to push together on the tilt axis and makes the gimbal more rigid so it holds together further when calibrating big setups.

Also here not the best picture but as the Dji focus can not run lenses with traveling focus gears we made a gearbox thingy with a wide gear so we can fly really fat lenses. It's up there in the corner.


And here is a picture of the 2pin lemo Dtap V power plate. Where the camera and vaxis is feed with a single Dtap. Quite nice to actually have such setup for hand held. Camera gets super small and I can have a small Vlock in my pocket and it's nice to have the camera with a nice round ass.

next we are getting some flushed antennas for the vaxis as those are what hits the gimbal first when tilting huge setups, getting low profile antennas lets us move the camera at least like 10-15mm further back which is huge.

This was went into the oven during the weekend takes about 130 hours to print a whole kit with side handle phone mount and the whole enchilada :)



That is one wild handle!! :blink:

Looking for something like this that works with the RS2. Hopefully so it's possible to use the electronic handle on it as well.

However, this one, in particular, is not good. It's low quality and introduces a bounce movement instead of helping. But read that there are some with higher quality and hydraulic system together with the springs, but I've seen so little about these kinds of handles, so there's not a lot of info. It also needs to be as low in weight as possible.

Does anyone have any experience with these?

I hate those things. IMO you're better off perfecting your ninja walk, because using those spring arm handles makes your whole rig feel bouncy and weird....the one I tried did anyway. It's currently sitting in a cabinet, not likely to again see service.

Hmm, makes sense. So which handles do people like most then? Tilta or DJI's own? Want to be able to put a Feelworld LUT6 on the handle with a 12G SDI cable to the camera or splitter if using the Raveneye, but I'm not sure how to attach the Feelworld to the DJI handles and I'm also trying to find a good flexible 12G SDI that doesn't affect the balancing.

Anyway, I think you should start a new thread, something like "PIMP MY RED - DIY rigs and setups" as it's always been interesting and inspiring to see DIY stuff.

Yes, Derailing the thread a bit.

Very proud of my little phone mount. It has captive unc 20 1/4 inch screws underneath where the battery pack snaps in that bolts on to the top of camera. It also has nato rail on the botom of the stand and last but not least threaded holes underneath.

It is. I think few handles has gone trough such elaborate process. First sculpted in clay after my and a few others hand. Then we 3D scanned the clay and used Houdini to merge surface the model so we could continue sculpting it in houdini and z brush. Then trough fusion 360 to add the threads and mount points and finally revert back to houdini to skin it with our digital coconut, lizzard skin, avocado or what ever we will call it texture. Then print it in Carbon PLA. We also iterated the prices easily over 20 times just to get it right. But anyone who held onto the handle think its the best thing since sliced bread. :)

LOL, I didn't realize the battery pack behind the phone (nor the rail on the bottom). Well done, man! :cheers2:

The battery thing is excellent, keeps phone charged all day without wires and can also feed a tilta nano via usb.
 
Need to decide on a side handle grip. Which one works best? DJIs own or Tiltas?

DJI works quite nice nice with the handle that can flip up for breifcase mode. But to me something like this is way better than side handles. And in the addition to the below. I made litle nato ending on the tilta handle that let us fixate a monitor there, which is a nice place to have it.

But then the float came in and it really is in a different league from all other rigs I tried. Had the armor man and ronin before and this thing... yes it really floats in comparison. Testing it with the 3d focus now, which works way better than I exepected and concidering it cost less than most focus motor cables its a steal and you dont need to disconnect or do anything to move to manual focus.

What are your impressions of the Float so far? I've got one on back-order, but worry that I'm going to have to do a ton of compromising to use it.

I find it super nice. None of the bits had any issue in my kit. You need a gopro battery for the remote but except for that it does not need any mods. I think most complaints was people who never operated a steadycam and or got early production runs that had some faults.


Was playing around in the office with it today with the dji auto focus... Together with float its quite a game changer. My films where I chase my cats around the garden will look tons better. Tack sharp and shalow focus. :)

Stability is the issue, that's why side handles are preferable. The float is not something I'll get because I need a faster switch between using the gimbal and tripods. Balancing the Float and operating that doesn't really fit my workflow.
As well as custom-building isn't really something I have resources for. So I need to get what I can get.

So I still need to know which side handle works best, Tiltas or DJIs? And what about SmallRigs Manfrotto plate? Is it possible to mount counter-weights on the back of it? What SDI 12G cables work that doesn't affect balancing etc.

Thanks for the insight. I figured the complaints were from people who didn't quite know what they were getting into. I have a few early classes in steadycam ops, so my expectations for the float are definitely measured. I'm by no means an expert.

Now hopefully tilta can get mine out the door in the next month
 
Checked out the Tilta side handles and there's one thing I don't understand. Why do the handle with the focus wheel have to be wirelessly connected to the RS2 when a cable between that handle and RS2 would make much more sense? Don't understand the benefit of that and is there a cable version instead to reduce the number of wireless signals?

Tiltas wireless RS2 controller that comes with float is superb. Zero lag and good range and just works. I assume their handle does the same.

But is it based on the same tech? I mean, I get that it might be good to go wireless for the handle since you could use it for a second person controlling focus and the head just using the handle, but does it have an internal battery to work like that? I just don't get why the handle doesn't have a cable option? What's the point of having it wireless when it's attached to the RS2? It's not even working towards the moving parts, but the base of the RS2.

The tilta float jostick / controller thing also runs on its own battery and it can be charged / powered wiht USB3 in, is it not the same for the handle?

And the joystick lasts really long on one little gopro battery so no real need for wires. To me its great if all camera equipment that could is self driven + USB-C . Much better than stupidly expansive lemo connectors that can have wrong polarity and breaks far to easy.
