  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Komodo Batteries

Designing Komodo with these batteries in mind seems to be the worst part of this camera. If it's true that Canon has stopped making them and they are going out of stock, what is Red's solution here?

I would suggest Red starts creating their own batteries, like the Red bricks, otherwise, this will soon be a major problem for anyone buying Komodo in the future or any Komodo owners needing to restock further down the line.
If we are stuck to what Canon will and will not do with these batteries in terms of production, we have no choice but to use V-Locks instead and the whole form factor goes out the window. Please just make your own batteries, otherwise, this will be out of control.

As someone who works for a company who produces a mass produced product I can assure you that the state of the world has impacted shipping of products, and greatly impacted materials needed for producing the products especially in the electronics and battery spaces.

Wasn't there some rumors that the BlueShape batteries would be chipped? Looks like they're listed on BH and Adorama but not shipping yet.

Anyone know whats going on with these?

I was told that the BlueShape batts are licensed by Canon.

Yes, this is what I hope the situation is, that the supply chain is locked down due to the state of the world right now. However, plenty of industries seem to have no problems producing products, so why just these batteries? Do you think it's about the material for the chemistry in them?

Was chatting with B&H sales today and was informed that official Canon BP-955 batteries are back-ordered until March 2021. Adorama say they will back more in stock in 3-4 weeks. Blueshape BP-975s look good and apparently they will also be offering a Blueshape BP-955 option as well.

Speaking as an original C300 owner, no one bought the 955's. Everyone always bought the 975's. The only 955 anyone ever had was the one that came with the camera.

And for what it's worth, B&H is showing expected availability as Jan '21, right now, for 955's & 975's. The Blueshape 975's are gonna be the way to go with higher capacity(over the Canon 975) and $110 lower price. The biggest question is will they be able to keep up with demand, especially since people will probably be buying them at least four at a time.

RED Komodo Battery Availability UPDATE Nov 3, 2020

By Take One Film & Video

Have a hard time finding a proper charger for the BP batteries. Hopefully a double or quadro charger of some kind.

Cameron Sino BP-955 battery

Cameron Sino BP-955 battery

I have a Cameron Sino BP-955 battery for sale. It powers up the Komodo but the info can't be read and not on Red's approved battery list.

But it does boot it up and works if anyone wants to buy it.

I can't speak to the batteries. But i've been using the Kastar dual charger for some Komodo testing and its worked great.

The cheapo Amazon batteries ($20ish) will power the Komodo but the camera recognizes that you are being cheap, gives you a warning upon startup, and then does not given any battery levels.

Any daredevils try out the cheap amazon batteries, yet?

It's both, hence the "hybrid" part.

From the link, it appears that the hybrid part is that is charges both Sony BP-U batteries (as used by FS7, FX9, etc.) and Sony NP-F batteries ("L" batteries). It doesn't seem to charge Canon batteries of any type.
