  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Komodo 6K anamorphic settings?

What are likely aspect ratios, frame rates, and de-squeezed resolutions?

• 1:1 ?
• 4:3 ?
• 5:4 ?
• 6:5 ?
• 9:8 ?

Nothing has been confirmed yet apart the fact that anamorphic support will come via firmware update.
For aspect ratio, I'm confident it'll be the same as what's available on DSMC2 since Komodo, even if it's not part of the DSMC2 lineup (and is not DSMC3 either), is suppoed to be able to easily integrate any workflow and shooting scenarios with those cameras. ;-)

Im sure you can extract the info from the red r3d SDK Komodo is allready in there and should be possible to extract the compression ratios.
 
If you mean "regular" anamorphic times 2, then it's 6:5 . For Komodo : Format/Res = 6K 6:5 = 3888x3240 - Aspect Ratio = 1.20:1 - Image Plane = 17.10x14.25mm (22.26mm image circle)

2X works exactly how it should. RED makes wider sensor digital cinema cameras, which is of value in a primarily wide screen 16x9 world full of about 99% of productions filming with spherical lenses.

You extract from your given format your anamorphic frame. In the case of RED that is the 6:5 formats usually for a 2X anamorphic workflow to a standard 2.39:1 delivery.

If you have a lens that covers the full sensor with 2X anamorphic you get a hilariously wide 3.79:1 ratio, which is um, not a cinema standard by a mile.

There's constant back and forth whether it's better to have a taller sensor than not and usually you have lower frame rates going that route when using the added height and then there's users who never ever use the added height.

There is one unique stand out. Gemini is the only sensor from RED that really seems to be hammer on the head a Super 35mm 4-perf direction.

Not to cool versus working as intended is a wild dynamic! And this is from a fan of somebody filming anamorphic.
 
I really hope you get the same anamorphic features as on the DSMC2 and ranger and I can’t wait to see what can be done with the native RF Mount as more glass is made, I hope RF makes its way over as an option for ranger and dsmc3 one day as I truly have faith in the development of autofocus in a professional setting and look forward to seeing what can be done with modern lens motor technology!
 
Huge fan of 1.3X anamorphic, particularly the Hawk V-Lites. The are some fabulous 2X anamorphic pieces out there. That said, IMO, there are far too many that seem to think anamorphic is a substitute for original ideas, creativity, production design, lighting, etc.

There's so much potential once I had a good amount of time to think of a few possibilities regarding the future of lens mounts. There is no spoon :)

While I've swooped in. On the topic of anamorphic, for the moment I am indeed using on board monitor's anamorphic modes to desqueeze and then tending to the footage in post accordingly.
 
Resurrecting this thread a little bit - but seriously, if anyone at RED is reading this. Please please give anamorphic aspect ratios + monitor desqueeze.

And let me know who I need to send whiskey to in order to push that out before the first week of June ;)
 
Agreed. For my use case I need the de-squeeze to come from camera for use with 2x (and in my fantasy dream world 1.65x) anamorphics. As soon as this is possible I'll be trying to buy 4 more.
 
Would love an 8:9 mode like on helium. Jarred, I’m going to the outer Hebrides in May if covid allows, I’ll visit a distillery and pick you something nice & old if you can make it happen ; )
