  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Trying to decide on which version to order but very happy you came out with these!
Any advantage of the USB C version other than convenience of not needing an external reader, that is, can the content be uploaded faster via USB C than using Red's minimag reader?

Speeds are the same from the built in usb as with the current minimag reader.
Faster than a minimag either way. I usually see just a hair under 500mb/s read speed offloading.

No other advantage than saving on carrying a minimag reader when travelling light, or maybe saving numbers of readers when offloading multiple mags

I bought 4 of these sticks and I will report back as soon as I have tested them!!

I definitely want to investigate incremental backups properly... and will do so carefully when the sticks arrive... but let me ask this forum... what is the best software to do incremental backups!

My DITs always seem to use Silverstack?

I have checked in hedge and it works pretty well... but what is best, easiest and safeist for incremental backups?

With Johns media I am going to try a completely different work flow where the media is one of my backups until I have processed the shoot , put it all on my Editshare and done a LTO7 for ofsite safety. This should transform data wrangling on my shoots form high risk and slowish to low risk and fast... and I love the idea of not touching the original files to I know I have zero doubt all is ok!

Not without a substantial change to the way the camera addresses the mag.

Honestly I’m also unconvinced that the added complexity of a hardware raid controller and the doubled probability of drive failure pans out to a genuinely more reliable system. Dual recording slots with independent paths in camera would be the better wish for the future IMHO.

Since they stopped selling the 48, 64, 120, and 240 GB mags, would you consider selling those sizes? Kippertie Short Take 48GB Mini Mags?

I've been asked many times on this, so I've requested a formal answer from Red. It was *not* on the table per my informal discussions with Jarred previously.
If Red have a lower capacity cut-off that they will not be revisiting, I would consider it. Not a firm yes even then though, as the economics are not as favourable for the consumer.

My view is also that risk to data multiplies by mag units used far more than by TB shot, and people shoot quantities largely independent of overall mag capacity.
 
OK we just received 4 x Longtake SSD mags...

1st brief impressions:

it is a brilliant idea for them to come in their own 4 mag capable mini Peli case that are the exact same size the Red ones. I LOVE THIS!! you can use Red and LT media side by side without finding a new home for the cards to live.. Our camera cases are cut with a space for this particular mini Peli case so a real bonus for us!

they feel very nice in hand and share the same premium workmanship you would expect from Red/Arri etc... They are full of little thoughtful design touches..! The bright coloured part being only on one side and facing inward for example..

they run a little cooler than Red mags. I have no idea if that actually matters but if feels reassuring.

I initially thrashed them in a Monstro for about 1/2-1 hour each (max everything) and they perfomed perfectly but then I ran a fake test with a workstation dumping 1.5 TB of R3d data onto them and the mag never dipped under 400MB/s..

The shape does feel slightly odd against the Red mags we are used to but we couldn't realy find a proper concrete negative...

We would never ever buy 3rd party media without Red approval and even then I feel we only took the leap becuase John is such a stickler for the impotant but sometimes boring details ;-)

Will report back after some serious TBs of shooting....

Next thing is we need to work out a slightly new labeling system due to the shape... but that shouldn't be hard

Sounds cool with the new mags. How much do they stick out of the camera? I once had a 1TB mag fall out when I was carrying so would be nice to know how to extra length work out.
Seems like a brilliant concept.
When can we expect the USB-C versions?
Will they be any faster than using the red reader or is it the same?

The mag is 25mm longer, but narrower of course. We've no yet found any fitment or clearance issues.

USB-C is due late in December. Speed approx. the same as Red's reader.
