  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Kinefinity in full atack mode

GM said the same thing about Toyota haha....;-)

Yeah, and they weren't wrong right off the bat. Korean cars were crap for the longest and now some of the most reliable on the road... It'll take time but do ya really wanna invest in Mavo if it ain't working well right now... Or wait.

Mavo isn't out yet, so whose to say if it works well or not...

Bloom seemed to really like the Terra 4k. I would've been all for the 6k, but apparently the rolling shutter approaches a6300-bad (which is a deal breaker).

I really love the idea of a camera that weighs 2lbs, APS-H~FF35 (with an extra stop of light!), and lasts over an hour on a miniscule 23wh BP-U30 battery... that's crazy. Plus Raw/Prores, off the shelf SSDs, dual 800/3200 ISO! It addresses all of RED's shortcomings at 1/10th the price (or half the price of just a Raven brain...) Plus Highlight ISO mapping? Definitely worth keeping an eye on at the very least...

I'm cautiously optimistic for the Mavo and LF.

Here's hoping BMD counters with some FF35/focal-reduction announcements at NAB!

My guess is that their target market is more BollyWood(and China, vietnam, etc..) than HollyWood. BollyWood and China are also loaded with UMP's because of the price/perf.
In the Western world we watch movie's shot in 8k, 6.5k, 3.4k mostly on 2kDCI, in those countries they watch their local movie's shot in 6k or 4k on 2kDCI.
Or we watch it highly compressed in FHD or UHD on Netflix, Amazon, HBO, etc...
Most viewers won't see the difference when something is shot on RED8k and ARRI65 vs. UMP or Kinefinity and displayed on 2kDCI in theaters or highly compressed network quality FHD or UHD.

Watched a Vice shoot about Nollywood (Nigeria's "Hollywood") that just came out, and in all the scenes you can see a BMCC being used:

Wouldn't surprise me if in a few short years we start to see URSA Mini cameras and Kinefinity filter down to be used by Nollywood as well.

The lens set is made by Nisi, or at least it will be made by Nisi... I owned a Terra 6K up until a few weeks ago. It's a solid camera, I just wish KRW was more widely accepted. I'll probably pick up a Mavo for the price and codecs.

Why did you sell your Terra?

Now, on my dream equipment wishlist, no matter how many drafts I do, I still have a Kinefinity camera on there for not only the great RAW image quality to price ratio but also because of its off the shelf modularity with regards to SSD media, inexpensive batteries (Sony NP-F I believe?), and the new E Mount option which is an absolute killer feature. These features really make it a great travel camera candidate and the complete ease of use in regards to accessories and E Mount lens options make it fun to use. For example, I love my RED One MX but even though I can put it together in no time flat, I still have to go through the motions and gear it up but I can just pick up my Sony AX100 or A7S and be ready to go and that makes those cameras fun to use, especially the AX100. So with the Kinefinity Terra, I can see that all I'd have to do is grab a couple batteries for the LCD and camera, pop in a Samsung Pro SSD and be ready to go. Some would probably say just get a DSMC1/2 but the fact that I could stop into any Best Buy, Fry's, or whatever computer store and grab another SSD or even a battery if I need it is a big sell and then there's the E Mount which I could put a Speedbooster on and/or use just about any lens available with inexpensive mount adapters. That's a kind of openness that I wished RED had continued with as it was all there with offering the Nikon mount for the RED One MX for many of us who were coming off of the 35mm adapter rigs with manual Nikon and M42 lenses, but that all went away into these expensive accessories and proprietary devices which, at the time, made sense as nobody made storage as fast as RED Mags and so on but now, much like choosing the RED Mags vs Mini Mags, I don't see why a standard SSD option isn't there for the lowest end recording options as Kinefinity and others show it's clearly possible. In any case, I wish Kinefinity all the best and I'm looking forward to seeing how the MAVO line turns out.

Kinefinity Terra cameras can use Sony BP-U batteries (same as in the Sony EX1/EX3/FS5/FS7/etc etc).

I think the E mount option is very appealing to use the Terra with the new Fujifilm MK zooms!!

Red is only one camera with that style. It is like one of the moon mission cameras from memory. Actually, you could say my two Box Brownies (or do I have one)ook like that. I don't think Red invented or has rights over the box. So I wish people would give them a break.

Maybe people will start acusding flat panel TV's of copying iPhones.

A few reasons. Mainly I plan on moving to a Terra 4K and Mavo LF combination. I got in fairly early when they started shipping the Terra 6k's, and was stuck with a fixed EF version which isnt ideal now. On top of that the rolling shutter and low light performance weren't great, so for now i'm picking up a Terra 4k which is vastly superior in RS and low light, and then will get the Mavo LF when it ships. I'll be the first to say that they aren't perfect cameras, but as a shooter I made a list of the things I valued most and the Terra's checked off the most boxes for me. I had an epic dragon and a red one before this, and I really miss R3D, but what I wanted most was something incredibly light, and something that could be powered easily by a side handle battery and thats what these really excel at. On top of that I do like the images that come out of them and working with prores is easy. Throw in the price difference of this vs helium or Monstro and it made a big difference.

hum not to start a flame... but its alot more than the physical design, the sensor temp thing, the whole design, the modular bits, sorry but even alexa minis far more distinct ... this looks like a red and the modular design bears that out :) still it looks cool.

Well did Red invent modularity, or the box?

I believe it's the same Sony sensor that's in the new DJI X7 that's also in the Mavo. Sony seems to be making some of the best sensors these days. The x7 is a very nice camera and DJI should build a cinema version of that camera, or possibly something like the Osmo.

We'll what happens to the price if Trump starts a trade war with China.

Question is how much less american a Kinifinity camera is compared to a RED. Sure RED cams are assembled in the states but it´s not really like they digg them out of their own soil.

Well we have an update on that, US $ is rising, so the US $ price will be lower. Isn't that what Trump wanted? Oh no...

Something I've noticed and it almost seems weird saying this but Kinefinity cams are getting too expensive. It's almost as if they don't sell enough like Blackmagic does. If this is truly the same sensor as the DJI X7 (specs look almost identical), then at 8K body only, it's almost 4x the cost of the X7 which also is a gimbal as well. If either DJI or Blackmagic build a cinema camera out of that sensor, it would mean bad news for Kinefinity.

Kinefinity cameras are nice when they're cheap and affordable, but once you start pushing 10K+ for a camera system, there are much more options available.

Kinefinity is pushing into higher end products (such as MAVO LF) than they've ever done before, so no surprise that their prices are rising. But yet their prices are still very low for everything they're offering at their price points.

Also the same (or so people think) as is in the BMPCC4K, GH5S and the Z Cam E2, seems to be a popular sensor!

Kinefinity does seem to be one of the few Chinese "copycat" brands that now is doing their own thing and innovating. They have some really unique features. The size of the Mavo/MavoLF cameras is very small compared to DSMC2 cameras, and on top of that, the wireless back looks very nice too. The only thing is they continue to push their Kineraw codec with no one wants to use. I think they definitely have matured and produce very good cameras now but I'm not so sure how well they will do. Blackmagic seems to make a more practical camera for a lot of people at a good price point whereas Kinefinity is trying to push high-end features into their cameras.

Blackmagic definitely has better color and dynamic range than Kinefinity due to the dual-gain sensor approach and it definitely gives them a nice image at a low price point. Cooling seems to be the main issue keeping Blackmagic cameras at the size that they are, but I'm surprised other indie manufacturers don't try Fairchild sensors.

--------------

The DJI x7 is a new super35mm camera with 6K resolution and 14 stops of DR. It's the sensor that's likely in the new Mavo 6K as well and it's a very good sensor. Surprisingly good for just a sensor that Sony hasn't used in one of their own cameras.
