Excellent suggestion Gibby!

Evens so we will likely cut everything in 2k and output in 2k and 1080p I do think that shooting 3k i one cam will in deed give us a better intercutting with the 4k footage.

Especially as I like to make three different DVD out of the shoot this will add variation to the images we can edit.

Did I say that I'm absolutely trilled to have you on this project?:)

ciao

Thanks Ketch...we're very stoked about helping you out on this Vegas production! :gun:

On RED One, beyond the field of view advantages of 4k and 3k over the FOV of 2k, 3k is much more oversampled than 2k when you bring it down to a 1080P finish. 2k is just 6% larger in resolution than 1080p, but 3k is over twice the resolution of 1080p. So the oversampled look of 3k not only cuts better with 4k, but also looks much better than 2k brought down to 1080p.

Then again, if you want super slow motion on a 23.98 timeline, as you know, only 2k will get you above 60fps on RED.

C-ya in Vegas!

Yes Gibby,

totally agree with you on the 3k vs. 2k factor in viewing and res. but unfortunately we can't escape shooting 2k as I need the higher frame rate to create an extreme Ramping effect, I also know that we can over crank in post, but I still like to shoot one RED ONE at 2k 120fps 2:1, this way we make sure to have the FX in case we really see that the 60fps of the 3k footage does not provide with the desired FX.

Gibby - wouldn't a dedicated wide-angle ENG lens mounted on bayonet adapter give the ultimate wide angle at 120 FPS in 2K? What's the widest 2/3" You have seen people using? Does anyone coming have the bayonet adapter and some ENG lenses? I would love to see the combo in action...

Yes, I was one of the ones who beta-tested the RED B4 adaptor starting over a year ago, and I've owned a RED B4 adaptor since then. I've used it frequently with several high-end B4 HD EFP-ENG zooms - Fujinon 13x4.5, Fujinon 22x7.3, Fujinon 42x9.7, Canon 40x, and others.

Shooting B4 2/3" equipment has been one of my areas of concentration for decades. That being said, even with the very best B4 HD EFP/ENG zooms on the RED adaptor, the images are slightly softer than 2k images shot on RED using 35mm stills lenses or 35mm cine lenses. The B4 adaptor has excellent glass in it. It spreads the native 1080p image of a B4 lens the necessary 6% so the combination of the adaptor and lens covers 2k. In the process, the 2k image is slightly softened. Don't get me wrong, 2k images shot on RED One using a top-level B4 HD zoom and the RED adaptor look excellent - they just don't quite match the crispness of 2k images shot on RED using 35mm stills or 35mm cine lenses. I've shot a ton of 2k footage on RED in the last 14 months with all three of those lens types, and that is my opinion.

As for field of view in 3k on RED, a nice wide angle 35mm stills or cine lens, prime or zoom, gives you an excellent FOV - and the image is much more crisp than the best B4 2/3" HD zoom in 2k on RED. For the 2k/120 slo-mo camera on this shoot, a 35mm stills or cine lens would probably work out best because the extra crispness of those lenses should help get images which will cut better with the 4k and 3k images. As you know, the 4k and 3k images will necessarily be shot using those same kinds of lenses - 35mm still and cine.

Sounds like a plan...

I think that one of the slo-mo cameras in 2k/120 and another in 3k/60 will work out very good for you in post...

I made it to Vegas yesterday and joined the team for much of the shoot last night! That was quite the show! It was fun meeting everyone and hope to see you all again sometime. I'll write more later.. I am very busy back at my "day job". Hope the last show went as equally is easily and entertaining and that everyone has a safe trip home today and tomorrow.

*** Thank You ***

*** Thank You ***

*** THANK YOU ***

I like ti take a moment to THANK YOU, everyone that made it to Vegas for the shoot, it was a fantastic experience and an absolute pleasure to see again the fellow REDUSERS that I had already knew as well as meeting new ones.

I truly can't say THANK YOU, in off as you all went way out of your way to come and help, and I fill so blessed to have become a member of the RED community and been part of this fantastic community of people that come together with strangers and accept them as part of Family, and not only willing to help for free but even spending their own money in order to do so, WOW, what a community!

The show was a blast to film, great footage was captured by all six cameras, and the work ahed for POST is next and can't wait to post some results!

Again I like to THANK YOU, every one for coming, you all did a TERRIFIC job, and I wish I get to Direct any of you again ( Paid jobs next time, off course:) ).

ciao

Congratulations Ketch, sounds great!

Can you tell us anything about the challenges you faced? Low light, long focal lengths etc? Also, love to see any footage or stills you can show at some point.

I'm moving towards live concert capture and would like to know your experiences.

Cheers,

Jim

We had tons of fun on this production! Ketch is a great guy, with tons of energy, vision, and artistic insight. It was cool to meet the rest of the crew, most of them regular posters here on RED User.

Shooting a show like that is a challenge: constantly changing light (everything from sudden brightness to near darkness), alternately WS/MS/CU, hand held and on sticks, pyrotechnics, and lots of motion tracking. I haven't seen the footage yet (except my own), but from the post-crew comments I understand that everyone pretty much nailed it. I'm still in Vegas so today we'll stop by Ketch's studio and check out the footage.

It is a real positive statement about the RED community and RED User to see a bunch of RED owners and professionals step up to contribute their time, talents, and creative energy to make something like this happen. RED is much more than a camera system - it is also a close-knit community of networking professionals from diverse production genres. The production team was as diverse as you can get - with heritage from Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the USA. Very, very, very cool...

Me and my wife/production coordinator/photographer wife (Pamala) were way happy to step up and help Ketch out on this production. I think it is always good karma to help someone get to their creative dream...earlier in my career many people stepped up to help me get to my dreams...now its time to pass that favor on to others like Ketch.

BTW - Ketch has a great new studio in construction - very cool place!

great Shoot

great Shoot

It was definatly a great shoot. Amazing energy from all the red users and especially Ketch.

I felt left out not having a Red to shoot on! So I just used my Canon for some time lapse shots. Here's what I shot between sunset on the TI and the start of the first show. Cool thing about this shot is that it is loopable. *And now replacing the YouTube link with a QT one!

Indeed.. a good time I had and that was because of the terrific people I found on this shoot!

HI Jim,

the main challenge of the shoot was that we were shooting the show while it was viewed by the public, and it was not changed in its design as far as lighting and performances times, therefor you have extreme opposite in the lighting, going from Strobes to Fireballs, to Spot to complete darkness, making it very difficult to film.

This was obviously a test shoot so to give MGM/Mirage Executive of Entertainment and example of what can be done for their shows with a full RED production and how the images can be played with in post, next will have to be a fully controlled environment.

But it was a blast to shoot nonetheless!

Footage will be soon coming as well as Frame grabs and pics, and will be posted on the new Thread in "RED FOOTAGE" section in the link posted at the end of this post below, please visit!

Gibby,

Thank you again for coming to be part of this shoot, you were fantastic to work with and look forward to work with you on some serious shoot soon to come!

You generosity, both in your time and in your words here, is truly appreciated, and so is that of your sweeeet lady Pamala, of which will soon post many Pics, that She tucked of the show as one of the on Set Photographers, and what an eye She has, great to have you guys there.

You are absolutely correct when you say what a fantastic statement this community has made. yet once again , in this shoot the amount of positive energy was flowing every were, and the collaboration and the level of commitment in this shoot was a "WOW" factor as much as the RED camera it self, people can continue to argue the fact that RED ONE is in deed just a camera, yet an other tool of the trade, but what comes with it is with no argument the most amazing thing I have ever seen happening in any community.

Glad that you also get to see the Studio in progress and now you know that you have an other place to call home!

It was definatly a great shoot. Amazing energy from all the red users and especially Ketch.

Tuto, my friend, much appreciated you coming out and a true pleasure meeting you, you are a great guy, and look forward to see more of us working together.

Love to see some BTS pix or screen caps once everyone recovers!

You will Don, they will be coming very soon starting with the one below, and then will move to the new thread linked below.

Hey Ketch,

I've PM'd you several times now.. you still alive out there? :)

~Sarah

HI Sarah,

it was a great pleasure finally get to meet you, and I can't believe that you drove back the same day, it makes me appreciate you even more for your coming to the shoot, sorry we didn't have an extra cam for you, but the timelaps you captured are great!

BTW. Sorry about not been able to post and or respond to your PM's and those of every one else, but my computer was taken hostage by Peter, as HE has been installing up to 6TB internally with a 8TB external RAID, Formatting grading Rendering and loading Literally TONE of footage, coming from 6 cameras, plus hundreds and hundreds of pics.
