  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Ketch + Epic + Canon Mount

Here is a list of Canon lenses that have been programed into the mount/ Epic Brain. These still need to be characterized for fine-tuned autofocus as they all have different motor speeds etc., but they are and will be functional out of the gate when the Canon mount ships.

Image Stabilization is functional on the entire stabilized lens lineup.

Hmm...I'll have to look into that one. Not concerned about all manual, it's what I am used to anyway. Seems a little on the slow side, I've always tried to keep my lenses 2.8 or above. But as a lens that would probably make most of its use outdoors it should be ok. Like you said, I've covered with the 35mm if need be. Also with the 24-70mm.

Thanks!

Now back to the mount...

I know there's programmable rack focusing between selected points, similar to how the Birger Mount operates. Is there any type of focus tracking capability? Like Set it to someone's face and it keeps it in focus? Obviously it wouldn't work for fast action, but for slow push ins something like that would be a Godsend! I don't always work with an AC.

Jarek, I also shoot mostly f/2.8, but LOVE to go to f/1.2 and for third I have a set of Master Primes as my personal Glass for my personal Epic, T1.3 ROCKS... ;)

However, you will find out that in most situations, outdoor and for both Portrait, Architecture, and Landscape, & Cityscape alike, you don't want to go under f/5.6 f/4 at most in some cases,
as even so this glass is great wide open, it really shines at f/4 and behind, f/5.6 I have found to be the sweet spot in almost all Still lenses, this is a design thing, while Cine glass like the Master Primes,
can be taken al day long to T1.3 and shoot like that WO still getting the absolute best out of that glass, we are now talking of a 20k+ piece of glass, size and weight, this all accounts for what the glass can do.

So f/3.5 wil give you plenty of shallow DOF while ensuring more detail all around in the immediate BG of your intended subject, yet if the shot is designed to distance as much as possible the non important BG,
you will then have a nice separation with a beautiful Blur.

Also to understand that a Tilt Shift lens, gives you almost infinite control over the focus area, and that you will need to close up that glass in order to receive a good portion of your shot been in focus, and at f/3.5 it
will give you a super shallow DOF, as you T/S and rotate your gears.

All the AF functionality of the RED EPIC ELECTRONIC CANON MOUNT will come in do time, right now I am testing the integrity and strength of the Mount, and I am using NO SUPPORT on any of the glass used,
even on the heavy ones, and the EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS II, even so not too heavy at all, it is still a long lens, and should not be ever used with out support on any of the Canon cameras, yet I have used often without on my 1Ds II,
and I paid the consequences of damaging the mount, on EPIC I don't see this issue, so NO SUPPORT because I can, this RED Canon mount looks and fills like a Solid ROCK... ;)

thank you, Sanjin !

thank you, Sanjin !

A possible solution!!!

The adapter made by

Novoflex with the order code EOS/NIK NT

allows the use of Nikon lenses that do not come with a manual aperture control ring (Nikkor G series).

I feel comfortable with dumb mounts, and I love my old nikon glass...

That look so similar to the Optitek mount....but of course wont work since it needs to be built around the PL mount. unless it is a Cannon to Nikon Adapter? But if you're shooting Nikon lenses....your just best to get the Nikon prolok mount from Jacek.

Johnny, would you be comfortable using the Optitek Nikon mount as your primary mount for G lenses? Put another way, if you could buy this one or wait who-knows-how-long for the Red smart mount and could save xx$$ by going the Optitek route, would you personally feel comfortable using the Optitek mount for the foreseeable future? Or do you think the Red mount is worth waiting for?

All the above limited to being you can buy one or the other, but probably not both.

So Jarred, does that mean the canon mount is about a month away? (just planning ahead here with my $$$)

Yup. Might be a small batch that gets out sooner for the guys that really really need it.

Makes sense. I guess coming from the 35mm adapter mindset you'd rarely ever stop down that much cause the adapter would begin to fall apart and you'd begin to see the elements inside it. I'd generally need to control my exposure by opening up and using NDs. I guess I gotta rethink a lot of things going to RED!

Okay...

AUGUST in Italy and every one in VACATION he he, so I started looking at other options to make an insane EPIC CANON mount shoot...

How about the Canon EF 50/1.0L? I'm really looking forward to night shooting with this lens on EPIC.

We have iris control and focus confirm working on the 50mm 1.0L. That lens motors are so slow to focus because of the way them move the heavy elements Autofocus is almost painful. We won't be wrapping around to characterize that one for autofocus till the rest of the list is done. Manual focus with the 1.0L feels pretty good though with the mechanics, but at the end of the day.. it never really was technically a good lens, the 1.2 (it's replacement) is a bazillion times better.

What of lenses not on this list? I take it this list is about AF functionality and such and iris functionality will work on any Canon lens out the gate. Tokina 11-16mm is one of my favorite wides, hope it works with it.

a lot of lenses may work that are not on the list, just not be completely accurate till they are characterized. We are doing some 3rd party lenses in tandem to the Canon Branded lenses.

I know this is a Canon thread, but are you working on Nikon mount in parallel, or will it be addressed after the Canon mount is finished?

That is a great start Jarek,

however since you have the EF 35mm f/1.4L which is a fantastic and super sharp lens , and in fact Canon has not cared to make a version II as of yet as it is such an insane lens,
I would suggest to go for the TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L II which is sharper then the EF 24mm f/1.4L II, and also will give you some super fun perspective possibilities, but this is a MANUAL ONLY lens.

The 24-70 has been talked of a newer II version yet no signs of it, it too is a fantastic zoom, well known for its particular look.
Of course the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II is a zoom that you should absolutely get, as you will discover it offers some pretty fantastic looking images, especially at the long end,
when shooting at the closest focus with a long distance in the BG of your intended subject, its separation and its blurring effect on the BG is just so sweet, I love it, and after the EF 85mm f/1.2L II
it is my favorite glass for Portraiture work, and or extreme close ups with a Canon 500D Close Up lens on it.

I would respectfully disagree.

Many Canon primes are more than sharp enough to be flawlessly sharp wide open for 2K (in the sense that more sharpness would simply not be seen by that number of pixels).

These include the 24 1.4 II, the 35 1.4, the 50 1.2, 85 1.2 LII (LI less so) and 135 f2. All these lenses look GREAT wide open, with nice bokeh that is not crunchy.

I don't shoot everything wide open, I'll leave that to the DSLR guys, but sometimes shallow depth of field is what you want for the feel of a shot - and really, technical chart shooting and achieving perfect technical sharpness at 5K is in my opinion pointless - the point is does it look nice, does it pop, does it look sharp - all the lenses I mention can provide a solid "yes" as an answer to that question, wide-open. Some set-ups will look way nicer at 1.2, others are more interesting stopped down. The TS 3.6 while very useful for many things, is quite limiting as a general 24 lens. 3.6 is not much DOF separation on a lens this wide - in many cases almost none.

I would also not worry too much about whether you resolve more that 2K. 5K is great for reframing and a major feature release (which you would never shoot on Canon glass anyway). Day to day music videos, TV shows and ads and so on only need 1080p, will only ever be seen in 1080p, is the only thing the present-day client could ever care about, and to sacrifice a nice, thin DOF that looks great for a given shot for some concern about fully resolving 5K resolution is to let your client down.

We do art, in the end. Artistic concerns should trump all.
