  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Ketch + Epic + Canon Mount

+1 tim.

Come to ITALY. Its fun here.

You've left the T Dot?
When I was a bicycle racer, I dreamed of riding the Giro D'Italia...20 years and 40 pounds ago.

Looking forward to seeing Italy through your eyes Ketch...especially the ladies. "In bocca al lupo"!

Thanks, and I'll make sure to give you a good view of them JD... ;)

I am on holidays.
Ketch, Epic and Canon Mount to see in action would be a great reason to go to italy right now :-)

It's fantastic to have so much flexibility with so much Canon L lenses.

...but i can't figure how someone will be able to do a smooth follow focus.

Do you think it will work ?

...or Will the Ls work properly with manual follow focus ?

Antoine

Antoine,

there sure is LOTS of room to be surprise of what it can be achieved here, this are new times and new technologies, and the hold should not be forgotten,
but the new should be embraced... ;)

Hi Ketch,

Yeah, i mean, i would be very happy to hear that you can do very smooth focus transitions with electronic FF.

If you can test this...would be awesome!

Thanks!

Antoine

We'll do my best to test all that I can Antoine, but also to be understood is that my needs from this mount might differ form those of others, I have been a Hand Focus puller on
this glass for over 20 years despite of the Autofocus future, but we know, with age some times and with fast moving subject, autofocus and especially tracking autofocus becomes a huge help,
how am I going to make great use of the Epic Electronic Canon mount I have to experience for my self, just hope to give it affair review and give you guys as much as you want out of this tests shoots in the field,
just remember that this are a One Man operations... ;)

That's already possible with the Birger mount on Red One using the Impero controller. Therefore in my ears such a question is already water under the bridge. With no doubt RedMote Pro will enable the same smooth control of focus.

Hey...you're younger than me Ketch :)

so...TEST!!!!!!!

:) :) :)

Antoine

He he Test is what I do a lot this days, always testing new gear, which is great, but I also at times just like to use the gear and see were it takes me,
I forget it is a Prototype and use it to his maximum, see if it is well built and if it does what it is supposed to, well, and if it does I should soon forget it is a Prototype or preproduction unit,
as I did with EPIC M, and move on in to Business... ;)

Well...ya know...being half italian myself, i'm a bit jealous thinking you're testing equipment in Florence :)

The world is unfair :) ...until my next trip to Italy :)

Ketch, it would be great to get your thoughts and results on how it works with focus tracking - little video / tutorial???

:-)

I have to be honest Steve,

I want to, but unfortunately here in Italy as some of you might know August is a time were every one is at the Beach, all store closed, and every one in vacation,
so finding some one to do a BTS video will not be easy, however I do have my brother which will shoot some BTS pics, so we know we can at list give you guys that,
but still looking to see if we can find a videographer... ;)

Also, do to some of the shots containing partial nudity, but the girls been fully nude, they prefer pics, which they can then approve of before been posted,
instead of a videographer taking footage of them while moving about naked.

But as a consolation, I have been planning a step by step video tutorial for the EPIC and a list of accessories, were I go in to detail explaining what is I am mounting on the Epic and why,
then go to use it, then take the footage in to post and give it a quick Edit (I'm not an editor, but this days is becoming easier and easier to get some footage out) and also take the workflow I do
with Frame grabbing in to a quick Photoshop settings and out to print all in real time, they should be some good videos, I hope... ;)

All you have to do is ask Ketch, and we'll be happy to help you get the word, and some videos out to the hungry community.

My offer to help stands. Whatever you need buddy!

David.

If you are serious about coming to Italy you should check out the event being planned for later this year.

...Sounds awesome! Might be tricky though. My wife and I are pregnant and "due" mid November.
Tough time to leave with all the "nest building" going on here!

If I can find a way....(Time/money/"permission" !)

Wireless focus will come with the normal REDMOTE, you just need to use the little scroll wheel, vs. the proper sized focus knob of the REDMOTE PRO.

Jarred, a thought and a question:

REDMOTE just throws data backwards and forwards between the REDMOTE and the camera. This opens up a whole host of possibilities. As you say, with the REDMOTE PRO, you'll have a traditional FF-type knob action.

It seems to me that this is an area ripe for customization, inventiveness, and third party accessories.

For instance, I admire the clean simplicity of the RED menu design; you quickly learn where things are and how to navigate it. But for me nothing beats nice big old-fashioned analogue-style dedicated buttons and knobs for the big items, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this. I'd like to see a camera controller with separate knobs & displays for shutter, iris, ISO, each channel of audio etc - for those times when you can't or don't want to mess around with menus to make a quick tweak, perhaps mid-shot. I keep my EVF on the camera even when I'm mostly using the LCD, just for access to that little knob - that's as close I come to the functionality I want on the RED ONE. Hell, if someone made the knob without the EVF attached, I'd buy one! I'm sorry you dropped that feature on the BOMB - but I digress.

What's your take on this? Have RED taken a view on 3rd party accessories that access the REDMOTE data channel? Has the protocol been published? Will be published? Decided on case by case basis under NDA? I think it's something you should consider seriously. You make the coolest toys/tools on the planet, but you can't make everything everyone wants :-)

Oh, and anyone taking bets on how long until the first REDMOTE iPad app hits the app store...? ;-)
