The dictatorship state of this forum. Who and why had the right to close the thread on Scientology by Yannick Hagman? Who is so ignorant enough, to not permit people the basic right of freedom of speech? I walk down my aria every day and listen to the muslim community preachers, preaching about their Allah, but I don't close them...They talk about things I don't agreee, but I don't just close them. Who are you, people to think, you can close Freedom of speech?! I feel sorry for you, whoever you are. And you'd better come up and confront me.

I insist the thread by Yannick Hagman to be opened for discussion!

I haven't even seen the thread you are referring to so I won't comment on whether its closing was justified, but as to your comments on free speech and demanding a confrontation...

No one is stopping your free speech. People always like to talk about free speech on the internet. However, this is a privately owned forum and the owner of a privately owned website is free to excercise THEIR right to operate it how they see fit.

Just as you are free to start up your own forum or website and run it however you see fit, and talk about whatever you want on it. Or, to go to a website that discusses Scientology, or whatever and talk all day long about. You have plenty of options and no one is stopping you from where you click your mouse.

So, the whole argument about free speech being stifled just doesn't really wash.

That said. This website is meant to be a professional filmmaking forum, and meeting place for folks who use a common tool first and foremost. Yes, we all want it to be fun and loose and everyone have a good time while learning and communing. However, there is a primary focus, and as I would hope you can appreciate, keeping a good signal to noise ratio is in everyone's best interest.

Plenty of places to talk about x,y,z or whatever random topic or political or religious debate, etc, etc.

Not too many places to network, commune, learn, etc with others who share a common profession/interest and use a common tool. So, the goal is ultimately to make that place as valuable and beneficial at it's purpose as possible. Not to accommodate anyone and everyone with a keyboard.

EDITED TO ADD: Coming into someone else's house and demanding that they run it a certain way is most definitely within your right. But, don't forget... it's also in the household's right to kick you out on the curb.

later,
Jason

First, you should do your research before speaking.

Second, ask yourself the reasons somebody would mind any subject being discussed here.

Being a filmmakers' forum, I think It's very impotant to be free to keep the flow of inspiration going, instead of closing things for reasons so pathetic.

Thank you.

And that said.. Coco... thanks for coming into my house and peeing on my carpet. Jason.. feel free to show him the door.

I can hear Bocephus in the background, "It was an attitude adjustment, now he sees everything just fine"...

Nicely done, nicely done.

While I was someone who participated in said thread, I don't agree, Coco. If Ma and Pa don't like what's being discussed at the dinner table, then it's their call and their call only to delegate what's appropriate and what's not. Gotta show some respect for what they do man.

Freedom of speech is great... but this is not a public space, it's a private forum that is moderated. When you registered, you had to read and agree to this:

The owners of REDUSER.net reserve the right to remove, edit, move or close any thread for any reason.

Religion and politics are two of the most deadly topics known to man... and I can see no reason whatsoever to bring them up here. This one is an easy call.

BTW... this is a dictatorship here. A benevolent dictatorship. :-)

Jeez, the internet seems to spawn these people. I think they're called - TROLLS.

If you have a legit complaint, fine. Calling people ignorant is just, well, ignorant.

And now I'm done feeding the trolls.

Amen to that.

The funny thing is I too felt the thread was unjustly closed. What was the big deal? The off topic section is litered with all kinds of non cinematography threads...in fact today someone asked about which power tool set to buy (porter cable or craftsman: i myself would go porter cable). Regardless Coco went a little cuckoo with his "fatwa"...

Haha...Jarred, you always have the best lines. :dita:

IIRC, Coco brought up a couple of interesting topics over on Scarletuser. Then this?... If there's anything to be passionate about on this forum, that certainly wasn't it...

PMSing probably...

This is reason enough to get yourself banned...

Second, ask yourself the reasons somebody would mind any subject being discussed here.

Uh, Because I come here for specific intel... This isn't religioususer.net is it?

Thank you.

You successfully disrupted that flow with your OP... :nopity:

I liked the carpet...

I must say to have read and seen many political or religion discussions before in the off topic section. Some with a much higher alert level. :)

However, Scientology actually hasn't been called a religion but science by the founder Hubbard, till the very late 80's in order to get tax exempt status granted by the IRS by pretending being "charitable" and "non-profit" - the IRS doesn't judge on the basis of religions. The United States constitution actually prohibits the congress defining religions (which is no wonder given that Jefferson wrote it and the disentanglement of the english religious boundaries was part of the job). However, Scientology isn't considered a religion in most places of the world but either a profit oriented cult, totalitarian sect or even racketeering organisation... I haven't come to a single objective analyzis from an outsider so far that would differ from just that.

But yeah, you guys can keep up doing pure formalism in the off topic section if that is what pleases. I don't bother.

you bring up a good point...what does "off topic" mean. is there an officially endorsed list of recognized "off-topic" topics? The name is somewhat deceiving. I admit english isn't my first language (not even my second for that matter) but off topic sort of sounds like, well, OFF TOPIC. I very much enjoy the section but I just don't want to find myself "off off topic", if you know what I mean?

I have a headache now.
