(snip) I hear about bugs in ACES and rendering artifacts. I don't like the sound of that. I also hear (and from what I've read this bit certainly sounds true) that it's hideously complex. When I hear good things about it, it sounds like I'm being sold, almost hard-sell.

A lot of processes seem complex at first, until you figure them out. Moreover, smooth integration of IIF/ACES into popular post tools will not happen overnight so that may require workarounds which will increase complexity in the short term. Of course, it's always easier to do things the same way you did them last week.
I have no reason to hard sell IIF/ACES, I don't make any money from it. I just believe that by creating a reference benchmark for color values you ultimately make things simpler. This is especially true in an age when the diversity of acquisition devices is more extreme than ever before, not to mention the radically different metrics for various deliverables. Would you master the same way for iPhone as for theatrical?
I do not have enough direct experience with it yet to comment on any "gotchas", but the idea of creating one master targeted to known values rather than tweaking for the hero deliverable and then modifying from there for secondary deliverables with all the inherent compromises strikes me as a much better plan - not to mention that as display technology evolves your master should have enough information to keep up without going back to the original elements.
Time will tell...
