  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

JUSTIFIED shot on EPIC

(snip) I hear about bugs in ACES and rendering artifacts. I don't like the sound of that. I also hear (and from what I've read this bit certainly sounds true) that it's hideously complex. When I hear good things about it, it sounds like I'm being sold, almost hard-sell.
Albert

A lot of processes seem complex at first, until you figure them out. Moreover, smooth integration of IIF/ACES into popular post tools will not happen overnight so that may require workarounds which will increase complexity in the short term. Of course, it's always easier to do things the same way you did them last week.

I have no reason to hard sell IIF/ACES, I don't make any money from it. I just believe that by creating a reference benchmark for color values you ultimately make things simpler. This is especially true in an age when the diversity of acquisition devices is more extreme than ever before, not to mention the radically different metrics for various deliverables. Would you master the same way for iPhone as for theatrical?

I do not have enough direct experience with it yet to comment on any "gotchas", but the idea of creating one master targeted to known values rather than tweaking for the hero deliverable and then modifying from there for secondary deliverables with all the inherent compromises strikes me as a much better plan - not to mention that as display technology evolves your master should have enough information to keep up without going back to the original elements.

Time will tell...

Cheers - #!9

Two thumbs up for Francis.

No way Jarred, a good friend of mine, Bonnie Root.... just booked top of show and is filming now and her final week is this next week.
She also directed a sick ass cool short ... shot on RED M-X called Sissy...

She said on Justice they shoot 5 Cameras so the actors are fully covered and can be fresh with 2 to 3 takes tops.
organic acting. thanks to Epic compact size... and peter green is method crazy good in that teaser

curious how they light 5 Epic cameras!? :)

Never 5 cameras

Never 5 cameras

On the show Justified we use 2 to 3 Epic Cameras if the scene involves stunts or shootouts. Possibly 2 cameras interior based on how comfortable the director is using 2 cameras. Enclosed photo of when 3 cameras would be used. Notice the tiny Epic near the door hinge of the car door. I would not know how to light a scene using 5 cameras. It would also break the rental and crew manpower budget.

A great looking show just got better.....congrats. Looks like you got a great camera team!

Entering week 6 of non stop shooting 4 Epic Cameras on the television show Justified. Every single frame perfect! Production has increased ten fold because of the size and weight of the Epic. Everyone is stunned at the beauty of the images coming from these tiny cameras. The entire production team feels as though we've set a new precedent of productivity and beauty. For half the cost. Truly a miracle in a little box.

So very excited to see the new season, Francis, and I am a HUGE fan of your work on the show. It's subtlety is easy to take for granted, which is an achievement of it's own. Keep up the great work on a great series!

Its great to hear of just how successfully this camera is performing at the highest levels of broadcast TV. Congratulations! I've loved Justified since the first episode...beautifully shot. I've just spent two months at the opposite side of the budget scale shooting a small-crew feature doco in the US and Europe. Found Epic's small size a huge boon given the quality, and HDRx transformed some of the exteriors, and interior shots with exterior window without having to do lighting summersaults. I'm curious if you make use of HDRx for highlight retention and if that is proving a time-saver for a production like yours?

Hey my buddy Jason shot that!

Hope the whole RED team gets to read this soon. :)

I'm particularly excited to hear about taking Justifiied's Epic footage through the ACES workflow that was flag-shipped on the show using Sony cameras last season. This info, plus Francis' high praise for the speed at which he can work with the Epic versus previous platforms could be a great influence on other shows shooting digitally. I for one don't feel EVERY damn show should be shooting on the Alexa. You certainly wouldn't want every show on television using just the same one film stock...

I have enjoyed this show from episode one! I am glad that Francis has the tools onboard that he wants to use now. Great story; great acting, now great acquisition of image! Honestly I have not missed one episode of this show, permanently on my DVR.

They dropped the ACES workflow during last season from what I have heard.

Watched the first episode of the new season last night. Looked great!

Hmm, I'm going to reserve judgement until after a few more episodes to see if they got the hang of the Epic. Otherwise I'd have to say I was disappointed. There sure seemed to be a lot of color noise in the darker areas of the image.

Curious. Where did you see it? I am assuming regular cable? I didn't see any noise myself, but I will revisit it.

One of my favorite shows - cast is awesome, story is original, the locations are authentic ... and its amazing how good S03E01 looks now that it is shot on EPICs! congrats to everyone involved in this project!
