JUSTIFIED shot on EPIC

I'll avoid stating what system we used last year. They were big and heavy. I want everyone to know that my crew consists of Richard Crudo, ASC who is on the Board of the ASC. Richard is a past president of the ASC and was recently elected as a Governor of the Motion Picture Academy. Another cameraman is Eric Roizman. His father Owen Roizman, ASC has five Academy Award nominations. Stefan Von Bjorn, who is also an amazing DP and recently shot Man on a Train with Donald Sutherland, is also one of Justified's cinematographers. I surround myself with great people and great equipment. I can honestly say that these cameras have made a major difference in the fatigue factor because of the speed in which television is shot. One day last year I watched my camera crew push very heavy cameras up a hill. I watched a steadicam operator struggle with weight beyond anyone's endurance. I told myself that if I got the chance to do it again things were going to be different. The producers are blown away with the images. The show is a good show and is going to be better. Graham Yost and Michael Dinner are great writers. Half the writing team are Harvard Grads. More importantly my crew might get some more sleep. Francis Kenny, ASC

Stoked to hear it is going so great, Francis. Always a pleasure to help out in any small way we can.

Here's to a little sleep for you and the crew... :)

YAY! Francis! Was just thinking while I was driving back from my set today - when can I share this wonderful news - and BAM! There it was!!!

Can't wait for this season! Great work Justified Crew!

This is one of the best shows on television. Margo Martindale was phenomenal last season and her Emmy proves there is some justice in this world.

Very pleased to hear the show is going Epic.

What I'm curious to know - is the show still pursuing an IIF/ACES workflow?

Amazing news!

let me quote a movie for you guys at RED.....

"if you build tHEy will come..."

oh yes....

keep on rocking

Still trying to get my head around talking _Sony_ into letting them use The Competition!? I assume if it's called "Sony Pictures" 'cause it's owned by the same Sony that makes CineAlta...?
Would love to been a fly-on-wall at the meeting where Sony Pictures was going to try and justify (pun unintended) this to the Head Office!
Talk about penetrating enemy territory...

Thanks for the window into the show, Francis! My philosophy is that the cast aren't the only ones on set who must give a performance. A more rested crew will deliver a better performance, so I can't wait to see the benefits next season!

On a personal note, my girlfriend and I have a standing date night to watch each new episode of Justified. She calls the show "Magical Pants" because of a certain scene in season one when Timothy Olyphant's jeans seem suspended by little more than the will of TV censorship boards.

The most important thing to remember

The most important thing to remember

Justified is a televison show that is one of the best. It has great writers and actors. I am surrounded by a great crew. Regardless, the most important thing to remember is that one man had a vision and followed his dreams. Our good luck was he was brilliant and had the fortitude to withstand all the mudslinging, slings and arrows. I am only a cinematographer and not a visionary. I am defined by my own limitations. My advice is to use this camera because it rocks. It will allow all of you to make better pictures and you'll have an easier time achieving those visual metaphors. Indeed, the conference calls and opposition to using the camera were tough. But when you know something is right it gives you the courage to follow your dreams. Goodnight everyone. Early call and I have a ten year old to tuck in. Thank you for your kind thoughts. Francis

Michael Watkins, ASC "this camera replaces film. They finally got it right!" I asked Michael if he had any words for the Red Team. These were his exact words. Today we worked an 8 hour day. An 8 hour day is unheard of in television. You get a director that knows how to shoot and you use cameras that perform. Cameras are set up ready to go within minutes. This camera is changing the face of how television is going to be shot.

Francis Kenny, ASC

The actors are in their trailers twiddling their thumbs far less often, I imagine.

Great on ya Francis... Even though you went Sony for a bit you were a friend who helped me with my first RED feature with advice.....

I guess your workflow may be a little different now? How about using ACES? We will talk about that my friend....

Peter

I suppose that 1080P is the new standard for proxies then, hahahahahahahahahahahaha:hand:

4K IIF/ACES episodic YES!

4K IIF/ACES episodic YES!

Props to Francis Kenny for his commitment to excellence.

First, by going IIF/ACES last year which made Justified one of the best looking shows on TV. I am assuming that will continue with the Epic as the acquisition device which, hopefully, will blaze a trail others will follow.

While budgets are tight everywhere, I REALLY hope they master at 4KHD (3840 x 2160) so that a time/cost metric can be established for a 4K post path on an episodic drama. In the first 2 seasons Justified didn't use a lot of VFX so the cost increase should be moderate.

Cheers - #19

I'm sure the excellent look will continue, likely improve with Epic in such good hands! But I'm concerned about ACES - I've heard a lot and asked a lot about it to many in the industry. I hear about bugs in ACES and rendering artifacts. I don't like the sound of that. I also hear (and from what I've read this bit certainly sounds true) that it's hideously complex. When I hear good things about it, it sounds like I'm being sold, almost hard-sell.
