  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

June Update

Ahh, so that might be the answer to the mystery of the 8K WPN Mag from the Vantage booth at Cinegear... The VVA.

This could be interpreted a number of ways...

1. You can't buy one until orders open up.

2. You can't buy one because they aren't yet available.

3. You can't buy one because they are going to be rental only.
or
4. YOU can't buy one because you are on a secret No Buy list.

I wouldnt of thought they ship scarlet w in country batches? I presume when you get allocated in the queue no matter where you come from they would ship the camera to you. Iv never heard of waiting to ship a batch to a country before.

The official dealers of Red in Australia, which there is ONLY ONE in Australia. It is the place I placed my order with, and they placed batch orders with Red (I guess). Right now, the dealer only received ONE and ONLY one SW. :-(

Man . . . would love to have access to a RED 8K cam in 2016. Not looking real good. Wonder why they don't change wafer suppliers. Current one doesn't seem to be a very good chef and there has to be other options out there

It's because the tech is on the bleeding edge. This has been addressed several times already. The other big players are still on 4K sensors and haven't really tackled the mass-production and implementation of 6K sensors yet. It's way harder than just sliding a disk through a line of printers and slicing out some cubes. It'll be worth the wait as we've already seen from sample shots.

Now do you get it Zeb? '-)

Red isn't really tackling mass production for those sensors, either. While they're pushing the tech farther than most, their production is still relatively small volume, since no matter how you look at it, they're serving a specialist niche. Even the top end dSLRs sell in volumes that would dwarf Scarlet and Raven volumes.

If they WERE being mass produced, Red would have been able to meet the demance for Scarlet-W and Raven in March... I wouldn't be surprised if Red's entire Scarlet-W + Raven order quantity matched a week or two of production for a Sony a7sII... but I don't think that there's any need to go into the differences, since anyone who's reading this thread already knows.

And the a7sII costs a little less, also... and let's see you swap out the display on THAT. :)

8K sensor production is bleeding edge? Not sure about that. There's a couple stills photog 8K sensors out there currently. Sony's A7r is 42MP. Getting the entire 8K RAW data pipeline recorded yes, that is a major challenge. But basic wafer fab . . . seems like the current vendor is not up to the task if they can't get yields beyond a couple percent after a year+

You have never heard of that because we don't do it. Time stamp is everything.

No comparison. The difference of difficulty between making a 5fps low bit-depth Sony A7r sensor and our 8K 75fps is of a magnitude of at least a 100x.

Agreed. But RED is 101x Sony ;-)

I hear Sony is planning on using that 7r sensor on their 8K cine cam. Any truth to that? If so, nice RED has a free look at the competition to make Weapon 8K even more bettah

All this wafer talk is making me hungry.

Oh come on, you very well know the A7r sensor is capable of more than 5FPS at full res. It's only limited by the electronics around it. I'm not completely sure how bit depth affects sensor yield 100x either.

Sony's 100MP 16bit 645 sensors is appearantly cheaper and easier to make than 8K VV....

I'd have compared your sensors more to Sony's medium format sensors in terms of complexity.

Which is probably why there are about as many 100 megapixel sensors out there as there will be 8K sensors by this time next year... not exactly a volume biz.
