  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

June Update

O and I know some of you Epic MX folks are patiently awaiting for your DSCM2 upgrade path... We still need a bit more time. It will be very special in a small but big way.

An upgrade path from my Epic MX to SW would be unreal. Looking forward to these updates as I would gladly upgrade my Epic MX to a DSMC2 body

It is a blind guess when the sensors come out of the oven, and when you are behind that pretty much dictates how many cameras you can make the following week.

When the next group of Bomb Squad folks join Red, any chance you can ditch the film making day, and substitute it for documentary making day? I really fancy seeing a 'How it works' style video of the sensor and production line process! Ta :cheers2:

Ok, would EXPECT all of Dec 10 to be allocated in July. But like Jarred said, we just don’t know exact units until they are in hand. These are “current expectations”, not “guarantees.”

Early February timestamp to be allocated in late August is too optimistic (Scarlet-W)? :)

HAHAHA WTF!?

Don't worry Andrei you are not alone. And for all of those that wonder why we can't give you proper estimates that you are all asking for, this is one of the top reasons why. One week we will have very few upgrades and get a ton of new cameras out. The next week, suddenly just like you, we get a ton of upgraders or switchers finally call in and say they are ready and it takes over the lines. It's a yo-yo... which makes it just impossible to predict. And before you say " fuck those guys " just remember anyone already in the RED camp going through the upgrade thing has earned priority... it's not just a loyalty thing, it's a family thing. You'll appreciate it when you part of it :)

Jarred, what you are offering through RED and the upgrade program is unique and awesome in so so many ways.

So I think that the simple fact that when I got the e-mail allocation I knew I can send the camera whenever is best for me and not when is best for you, is incredible. It's so obvious there is no way to plan any production lines when you decide to give that much power to each and everyone's individual needs as a customer. But I think that is part of the DNA of RED and the modular and customizable system :)

I just wanted to go on your hunch for when is the least busy time for you, so I can send the camera and get minimum time without it while making the upgrade.

So I see that I have 2 equally good options: I can send it now and prepare to wait for 3 weeks, or send it later and keep on shooting in the meantime :)

I'll try to notify my bomb-squad to let me know when upgrade lines are freer and I will send it then.

*Meanwhile I will let RED UK fix the burned HDMI port due to accidental reverse polarity on a D-TAP (the LCD that was connected in reverse polarity got some smoke out of it, but survived, the port on the Epic to which it was connected unfortunately quit :D ) - I know you guys love these stories :D

Just in case it was lost in the translation, you can still shoot ANA even with the full width "spherical" 8K VV sensor - you'd just window a center cut, and not use the "outside" photo sites.

Yeah, it seems this is just a way to still use a sensor with bad portions on the outside, as someone suggested. I was hoping it had more pixels vertical.

But with a lower price tag... still a win/win.

It also helps to reduce costs all around, since it means fewer wafers for a given total number of sensors, so better amortization across wafers.

Industrial Spy like your post :)

and Black Magic can´t wait the documentary :biggrinjester:

Saw the RED truck driving around in Pittsburgh this afternoon. Thought about stalking you but decided against it ;)

So happy to hear that orders are still coming in. Honestly, fall is not that far away!

So I guess the dream of my 3/3 - Scarlet-W Arriving on my birthday on Sunday 6/12 are shattered.....what will I ever do, I guess ill continue waiting :). But in all seriousness, been loving seeing the footage from all the lucky folks who ordered way earlier than me and have gotten their cameras, and just makes me even more excited to eventually receive my first RED and join the party, hoping before Summer is out, but no rush really.
If anyone in the NYC area has an EF mount RED, I have a set of Canon CN_E primes that I would be happy to lend out for a low low price, while I wait :)

To be clear, those who plopped down 10k a year ago (I count myself among them) for VV 8K are in line for the full spherical sensor, correct? Can we get a bit of clarification on this ANA and spherical 8K distinction?

I totally get that. The 8k Ana option sparked my interest because I thought it might allow a slightly wider field of view when using spherical lenses than does the 6k dragon sensor - and if the Ana option is made from sensors that cannot go into the regular CF 8k weapon spherical, maybe there could come an option for the Ana sensors to be available at a lower price point in CF- or even in weapon Mg if somehow the lower 6.7k resolution could get by with the boards in the Mg weapons. I don't really know but it's an exciting prospect.

Yes.. All the 8k spherical orders remain the same. You can't buy the ana 8k, so you dont need to really worry about it.

WOW - is the 8K anamorphic sensor 4:3?!

I don't get the impression it's something they care to go into at the moment. FWIW, if the 6.7K width is correct, it might do 'scope (2.4:1) with a 1.5X Anamorphic lens... maybe a small crop. In any case, until such a thing is reality, this is a rabbit hole.
