  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

John Marchant's " Kindling " shot on DRAGON MONOCHROME

Hello John remarkable work. Thankfully films like this will again bring B&W cinema closer to mainstream.

Can you tell us what music was used at the beginning of your film. I looked in the credits buy could not find it.

Thank you and keep producing works like this.

The only thing I wish was easier in my Mono workflow is the application of highpass for sharpening, which is my favourite method, but rather under-represented outside of stills-land. IMHO much kinder than unsharp mask etc.
If your a nuke user, i am doing a bunch of b&w gizmo's for things like that (i.e. stuff that the stills guys have), just send me a IM (i would need to clean them up a bit - i.e. one gizmo example is a high pass sharpening node with a bleach bypass chrome feel & with black noise reduction).

The image-aesthetic (overall) pulls me already into a different world, the acting is great and combined with the "micro-jump-cuts" I'm not certain where I am anymore. In other words, great idea and quality. Thanks for sharing.

(... do I need to mention that I certainly would love to have a B&W camera with this kind of quality? ;o)

John:

Insane composition of your images, regardless of the Camera! (But of course, DRAGON MonoChrome captures it the best.)

Jarred:

Thank you for the continued release of REDRAY files. Everyday, we are blowing people away with 4K .red movies on our REDRAY!

Thanks :)

Redray is a very portable format with typical broadband bandwidth. Great to have a truly representative way of sharing and displaying our work .

How is the lack of 25p working out for you John, are your projects 24p? or do you make a 24p version of your 25p projects?

I shoot 25p for web delivery- better sync with PC screen refresh, and with UK mains frequency flicker in lighting. Retiming to 23.98 is trivial when exporting for Redray. I export my sequence to TIFF which is inherently frame rate agnostic, and just stretch/pitch my audio track to match. Nobody notices the 4% difference and it adds one 30 second job to the process.

Ok, for commercials 4% makes a big difference in my world. Especially fast cut 40 second or 60 second ones.

Thanks

That's true, but currently Redray is only a factor when I'm in charge of playback. For any medium where run time is that strictly controlled the playback mechanism is out of my jurisdiction too :)

I was trying to get my hands on a Dragon Monochrome this past weekend...looks like you beat me to it ;)

Great visuals. Loved the "roll over snorricam" shot.

John:

regarding the reversed pov rig, what material did you use? Any reason why not use circular tubing instead? Anything you would improve if you starter over?

Martin it is indeed a Glidecam vest :) A little used and abused, but a very useful tough piece of gear.

Marcos, the vest has a number of threaded holes which I 'borrowed' for my temporary rig. Very simple, and non-destructive.

Yep, I'd agree - I just happen to be a bit of a metalworker / maker / fixer :)

It's a nice rig... was there a lot of shakeycam in the footage you had to take out in post? (the result looks amazingly smooth considering how far out the camera is hanging.).
