  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

John Marchant's " Kindling " shot on DRAGON MONOCHROME

Really beautiful, love it.

Yeah, i admit a monochrome is on my wishlist for some time. ;)

Profound work! Thanks John.

John:

Loved every second of it. Just so I understand the reverse POV rig- I imagine the girl was moving it by herself? If so, how heavy was that setup? Could you post more BTS pics of this particular setup? I'm really interested in doing something similar for an upcoming shoot. Thanks!

The reverse POV rig for the girl was a steadicam style vest, which we knew would hide under wardrobe, with a custom mount made from a few 1" square tubes. With a hacksaw, a welder and a stack of inch tubing I can make anything hehe.

Thanks John, very cool. I also like that the dragon has the same "feel" as the epic monochrome, dragon is a evolutionary step up. Also what would you think of intercutting between dragon monochrome and epic monochrome (i.e. i'm in the middle of my film, there would be a lot of benefits to cutting over to dragon monochrome ... i might need both though - dragon monochrome and a epic monochrome?).

Another shot of the body mount aka the uber-selfie rig ;)

Really not too heavy to work with - looks worse than it is. The weight is less than a steadicam, but obviously with a less ergonomic centre of gravity. Our actor was about 5'6" and slim but managed just fine. Crew obviously took the strain wherever possible, and we had extra hands on the rig for a few shots.

I honestly feel Dragon Mono is a bigger step onwards from its MX heritage than was taken with the colour camera. I find Dragon Mono a much easier camera to shoot than the regular Mono - a generally more pleasing result straight out of camera. You could match them within reason of course, but the Dragon sensor brings the monochrome concept to life and makes it simple.

With the MX mono I lean on the curves heavily, and I sometimes find it tough to pick the right way of exposing from the options open to me. With Dragon mono I'm home free at such a wide range of ISO its just crazy - and no more 800ISO bottom limit.

The only thing I wish was easier in my Mono workflow is the application of highpass for sharpening, which is my favourite method, but rather under-represented outside of stills-land. IMHO much kinder than unsharp mask etc.

Agreed. Plus proper skin tones are a cinch!

John, that looks like one of my Glidecam Vests......? As in, one of my companies vests.

Glad to see you putting it to such good and varied use.

:)

John:

great idea. How did you attach the tubing to the vest?

Martin it is indeed a Glidecam vest :) A little used and abused, but a very useful tough piece of gear.

Marcos, the vest has a number of threaded holes which I 'borrowed' for my temporary rig. Very simple, and non-destructive.

Hehe. It is indeed one way to dodge the bullet. In fact one of my favourite things in mono-land is figuring out how different light, filtration etc behaves - you end up with some crazy combinations at times to get what you need.

Great to hear, John.

Best of luck with all of your cinematic art!

now that's some gorgeous black and white.
