Well, it's always good to at least have some news.

According to his predictions Epic will go on full scale production on April 2011.

Assuming RED still has Scarlet 2/3 fixed coming after Epic I think we can expect Scarlet S35 in mid-2012.

They'll probably be busy enough with Epic until September/October 2011.

I would also put my money on Scarlet 2/3 coming out only in 2012.

It sucks, but judging from RED's track record so far I think this is likely.

AF100 here I go. I thought I would have to sell it pretty quickly but it seems I'm gonna be stuck with it until late 2012...

Nice to see a well thought rational post about scarlet delivery. For a while there, I thought they would try and fast track the scarlets in front of Epics but that's not going to happen. Arri is the target. Not Panasonic. Not Sony.

Though last we herd Jim hoped the S35 would be shipping by April 2011, considering last we herd before that the fixed and interchangeable were to ship first we can assume he means they will be shipping by then as well(not necessarily just how I see it).

Now consider what Jim has said about epic to start shipping in feb, and that these new camera's will not effect the delivery of the rest of the camera's (who knows it might even be sped up).

Now this is all based on what Jim hopes can be done but I would trust his predictions over others, now how fast will they be able to ship to the regular population of non red owners who knows? we won't know until mass production starts so I say we just wait and see.

Honestly didn't even expect them anytime before summer, and there is more camera options out there every day I can wait for them to get everything right, but I can understand if some can't.

Either way all of this is good news to me, the new line of cameras will soon (hopefully) be in the hands of the public.

have a good one

...I would also put my money on Scarlet 2/3 coming out only in 2012....AF100 here I go....

My guess it that the Scarlet 2/3 is not exciting to Jim.

The AF100, with its 18mm sensor, will have about 2 stops shallower DOF than the Scarlet 2/3 (f/2.8 on the AF100 will look about like f/1.4 on the Scarlet 2/3). In my limited experience, this is about where OOF blur really starts (I have a Lumix L3 with an 8mm sensor and an f/2-2.8 lens, and background blur does not become really pronounced until a FOV of about 2 ft.)

Cramming over 6MP into a 10.1 mm sensor does not sound like fun. The dynamic range and low light performance might be good, but could not be great. How could it compete with the RED ONE (5K Mysterium-X), which has photosites with two times the area?

It's understandable, but it's a shame for the $5K-$10K market. The Scarlet 2/3 Fixed, with a codec better than ProRes, and affordable SSD storage media, would have forced Panasonic to give even the HMC-150 an upgrade to AVC-Intra and the option to use affordable, non propitiatory flash media. If the 2/3 were released 2 years from summer 2008 (that is, last summer), the AF100 would have used AVC-Intra and an option to record to something like CF cards.

I wonder where the competition will be in 1212, and if the Scarlet 2/3 will be a must have, pushing the market forward, or will be just another option.

If it is not something really special for the times, I don't think it will be released.

While there will always be "more"... EPIC is a game changer.

You will likely not ever need more. You will get it because we will make it. But EPIC is the ONE that changed everything. I have seen a lot. I own over 1000 cameras. EPIC is the one that will change history. It is the one that covers everything. Size, price, performance. If I died and went (somewhere)... I will be content. EPIC will get to market.

I'm starting to sell myself on S35 and forget about the 2/3rds system entirely. Just seems more future proofed.

It’s fascinating to me that the closer to release we actually get, the farther the estimates of random speculation move out.

Pure speculation... but I think those that were building their S35 system around a $7k brain ($8k with HDRx) might be in for a big shock with Epic Light. I can see a considerable price hike coming up.

I will be interested to see the final spec/feature list for these cameras. Right now, based on what we know there isn't a lot left between Epic Light and Epic*.

Maybe 60 fps instead of 120?
Maybe HD-SDI and HMDI on the brain?
Maybe...what else is there?

*That's not to say that small differences in specs/features can't make a big difference in the end product. I'm just saying this isn't like we are moving from a 1080p 2/3" chip up to a 5K S35 chip now that it is Epic Light. Of course, maybe we are. It sounds like Jim is keeping some of the features of Epic under tight wraps.

to the original poster:
I doubt it'll take ALL OF 2011 to get a scarlet out the door.
It will be in 2011, not 2012. think about it, 15 more months before someone can get a scarlet? Seriously doubt it..

I don't mean to be premature, but it seems that the dream is over.

The dream of an affordable S35 camera with resolution comparable to film.

It was good while it lasted guys.

See you on DVXuser.

Not being flippant Thomas but have you taken a good look at the Sony F3? To me that seems like an affordable s35 system. I'm seriously considering pulling my AF100 deposit and going with the Sony instead.

You are talking about scarlet S35, that was a scarlet that would follow epic. Epic program than scarlet program. Now the s35 IS an EPIC. Might be here sooner than we think.

Aww c'mon gents.
You're going to have Scarlet options. Unless I missed something, the fixed lens and 2/3 interchangeable are still chugging along. I own Sony and Panasonic cameras, and have operated Varicam's, Cine Alta's and very high end EFP hard cams and handhelds. (Love to talk to Gibby sometime) I'm tired of folks under-bidding projects with an xl-1 (or DSLR) and a Lowell light kit. No, I can't afford Epic either, but I strongly believe that you're going to better off with a Red than ANY other camera out there. Call me a fan-boy, I don't care. What limited exposure I've had working next to a R1, I can assure you that the end results are far better than very expensive Panasonic, Ikegami and Sony cameras. Factor in costs and it's really a no brainer.

No I haven't used a prototype F100 or FK-3. Call me old fashioned, or just old, I don't like handy-cam-like prosumer gear. I'm guessing that form factor is only a small part of the reason Mr. Jannard made his dream cameras more like his passion for still cams.

It seems to me that a lot of folks on this forum are just itching to spend money. Why? I wish I had a wad burning a hole in my pocket. I've read maybe one or two posts where someone NEEDS to at least get a receipt by Dec 31 for budgets or tax reasons. Fair enough. Unless you have a tight shooting deadline for Q1 why be in such a hurry? Sit tight and let the cameras roll out. I'm guessing we'll all be happier in the long run.

Now that I think about it. Forget everything I just said. Go ahead and buy your camera now. It'll be easier for a small business like mine to explain to un-educated clients why using Red cameras is better for them in the long run. But don't worry, my sound, and Kino Flo package will still be here when you shoot in the Southeast and it works with any camera.

you guys are jumping to some big conclusions with very little to go on, and you have based your being priced out on your assumptions, why don't we wait a little guys until this is officially announced with prices and specs before jumping to conclusions.

This time I'm so excited. I'll get a bit more time to earn, till I get my Scarlet/Epic light, I think I'll sell my last cam and work as a friend did: Canon xf + 5DmkII with 100mm L IS USM for macro shoot. Seems to be great gear waiting for my SuperRedcam.
