  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jim Cameron buys...

Anthony is right on the money.

The fact that someone like James Cameron will shoot with Epic will hold a lot of weight with Ad Agency type people (as one example). They're notorious, in my experience, for insisting on technology simply because Mr XYZ uses it. This bodes well for any Epic owner as you will be able to charge more, particularly in the short term. I see it all the time.

Yup.
Even though it is hard to admit, Mr Cameron probably pulls a bit more weight and followers than me when he chooses his cameras...

Ok Ketch and Lorenzo,

then I misunderstood the post quiet a bit.

Just want to encourage Jim to do the best he can in a possible timeframe. I surely understand the situation.

I'm sure this is a big deal for all of us that these giant pictures get shot on Epic, I would'nt like to have seen it otherwise.
Not saying there are no other systems around, but Epic is the closest to my expectations on how it should be build.

So I'll try to be patient and keep my thumbs up for the Red team.

Just hope they will indeed continue the M line until production line is fully setup. with accesories and titanium mount, it's certainly the best deal around for long time.

Not only will RED continue to produce EPIC M cameras till the Production Lines for Epic X and S are done,
but I am sure they will continue to built EPIC M cameras as far as there is buyers for them, personally,
I already decided for our Studios, that we will buy all EPIC M cameras, with few EPIC S to give away together with the 8x Fixed SCARLET... ;)

Hello Tim,

My 2 cents.

- There is a line even in the M's. I doubt Mr Camron or associates have 50 Serial number under 7000...
- The battle test thing is about the Tattoo programm started 6 month ago with Spiderman and others features. We, longtime RED one USER, don't need anymore any beta tester for the Epic...
- M's where made because of housing manufacturing problems that as of today should allready have been sorted out, the Japan thing did not have any influence between M's and X's
- 50 epics also means 250 SSD 256, 50 Bomb EVF... this won't help supplain chain.

If Camron shoots with bought Epics before we (low numbers) recieve ours... RED, as a company, has a customer treatement problem.

Patrick

Still hoping to shoot on Epic-X 336 mid June. Also looking for alternatives (F3, 5D, AF-101...)

Hey Patrick

No I also don't believe that JC has an early serial number like us but that's not the point. Jim said from the beginning of the M line that RED will pick the ones that they think will bring some good stuff to the table. JC, Peter Jackson and Ridley Scott certainly will do that. Mark Toia would also :001_smile:

I know the Tattoo program, I'm here every day but still the Epics could use some more testing. All the features aren't even enabled yet and there are no existing Epic X. So more battletesting is never a bad thing. At the same time I'm right with you. Every time an M leaves the door I feel a bit like jumpshipped by the big guys that never waited in line like us.

If RED has the rest of the stuff (bombs, lcd, cables, SSD, etc) ready in line by now, then the June ramp up will catch up fast. That's what I'm hoping at least.

So hang in there. We are almost there.

Tim

and yeah, the f-3 s-log cam looks damn good.

He should shoot a live action film before or after Avatar 2. And use A, B, C and D 3D 5k-Cinerama units, 24 cameras total. The resting 26 can be loaned out to friends once he realizes he won't need any backups. Or use them only for the "big" days when they need 8 different angles in 3D 5k-Cinerama, you know, for big practicals and such, lol. 48fps? Sure! Go for it if you get the distribution channels. And he'd also able to do 250% slow-mo without a quality hit. Of course, it might be insanely-real, and not for everyone's taste. But ultra-real is what he is going for, right? So... If he managed to navigate that Cinerama 3D cinematographical maze successfully...

But I think he might have other uses for them. What they are, dunno. But can you imagine using all 50 in a decent size stage where your cameras are plugged into massive servers capable of calculating depth, so with enough of them you get complete coverage of everything inside, from every angle. Glass floor, why not... And that's without mentioning being able to interpolate all camera's angles of their faces into the final. Can you imagine the computing power necessary?

What is the advantage of getting all Epic-M cameras as opposed to Epic-X with the titanium mount?

Hand machined material wil be more durable then Production one.

I don't think so. I expect my EpicX to be just as durable in every conceivable way.

I understand paying a premium on an Epic-M in order to receive it today. I just don't understand why anyone would continue to pay that premium once Epic-X cameras are shipping in full numbers.

Not to mention our good friend immediacy!

I am guessing that this is a fairly new era in production where longer term productions are concerned it makes sense to buy these cameras outright as PJ and now Cameron has. It would however obviously not have been budget conscious in the past to buy this many cameras for an 18mth shoot, if one were shooting on other, more expensive gear, like film cameras. PJ didnt buy a dozen Arri 535s for Lord of the Rings did he?!

Having never been involved in films of this scope I wouldn't know but it was always my understanding people always rented. Obviously if you are working to develop a hybrid camera system like Cameron has in the past then you work directly with the manufacturer so that's different.

Because the Epic-Ms come with everything you need to use them, allowing you to skip the queue for the remaining parts. It's not much of a premium, price-wise, if you consider everything together, especially if you're Stage 4.

We've put in our inquiry because the Epic (or whatever we have access to) is being incorporated in a larger workflow. I really want the Epic, but realistically, we can't wait for it and put everything else on hold. And the longer it takes to ship, the more $$$ we have to spend on another camera because we start seriously costing money while other areas wait. Even the Alexa and the Phantom 65 are in range for us at this point.

We'd rent, but we literally are doing R&D and the camera is part of that signal chain. We need the camera 5-7 days a week on an ongoing basis, and whatever we choose we'll be stuck with for a few years. I really want to build that signal chain around the Epic and RED if at all possible. I've done everything I can do. (I'd buy a Red One MX in a heartbeat if it met our needs, but I have to have the realtime outputs the Epic has.)

RED, if you're listening, check my website: http://erichocean.com. I think I'm doing pretty sweet stuff and the Epic fits near perfectly. :)
