  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jarred's pet dog... Izzy

Since I've been reading these forums every day for the last few months I can repeat what has been said numerous times: the fixed lens can't be replaced with any lens mount because the whole fixed 2/3" brain is different - the brain is "deeper" than other scarlet brains to accommodate the fly-by-wire systems, autofocus and such. Also to keep the size normal the sensor is deeper in the brain relative to the "mount" than on the other 2/3" brain to accommodate the rear elements of the fixed lens - so if you took the lens off, put a b4 or c mount there the lens wouldn't work anyway because the sensor would be in a totally wrong place for the lens.

I'm more than happy with what RED will be offering to us - the only limitations will be your budget and imagination. It's great to see that even when they scrapped their whole original EPIC and SCARLET plans they're still going out of their way to provide products similar to what they were planning before the whole DSMC concept(I'm thinking about the fixed scarlet and the epic-x upgrade for current red one owners) so the people who were wetting their pants about the 3k for 3k idea could still get that, but now it's just turned into so much more for you.

For me the choice is easy - I'm looking to shoot snowboarding, biketrials and no-budget indie short films with the upcoming systems so for me the 8x fixed scarlet is the obvious choice - it's like a point and shoot camera that's been training(and taking the good old roids) with the Eastern-German Olympic weightlifting team. If you're planning on doing cinema and don't have the budget for the ff systems and ff lens the obvious choice is the 2/3" brain and the mini primes. You can never have all the good things in one package. There was an interesting topic with the request for fewer features ( http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=26822 ) that had very interesting links, and I'm not the maximiser type of guy. I'm the good enough type of guy who is gonna enjoy making films with the 8x scarlet no matter what it's gonna be like.

Juhan Malmstein (I also sent the PM to have my name changed, but I guess it's just easier to put our real names in the signatures so nobody would come poking with the ban stick)

I love posting here... don't consider it a "job".

I'm mostly a lurker here, but I just wanted to say that I find it absolutely incredible how in-touch with your customer base you are. Considering that you're a multi-billionaire who certainly has plenty of other things to do, I think I can speak for everyone when I say that we consider ourselves very lucky to have you involved here on the message boards.

I am more than just excited for the Scarlet - I expect that it will blow me away.

Hey Jim,

I noticed the motion clip of Izzy is on a site called redgrabs.com. I think you should use shotonred.com.

I know I can't use the name so maybe you could use it?

P.S. Thanks for the bitchin camera!

yeah, don't expect to find Sony CEO's talking to their customers.

Something I noticed, izzy's boddy is twitching in the out of focused area on the left about half way through the video. His body is dilating from breathing then it starts twitching. Any one got an answer for why. Certainly its not izzy doing it.

Perhaps its because it's a prototype?

Cheers

It looks like the clip has a stutter to it. It seems to stop and jump a few frames. Looks like it does it twice.

You may have a playback issue because the clip is as smooth as glass...

"Let it load through once then play again." As stated by Jarred.
And you will see the motion without any stutter...

I've been lurking here for a while, but I really want to get involved and actually start posting and feel like a member of the community.

For a long time now, I've been looking to upgrade my current camera. (HV20 that I bought when I got out of college. It has nice image quality, but a lot of times I feel like it's nothing more than a fun little toy.) I've researched a lot, looked at a lot of video cameras, but they all just seemed like more expensive toys. It was just something about the way they all approached being a video camera.

That's why I love Scarlet. At it's foundation, it's not a video camera... it's a cinema camera. It's so simple, yet so amazing. It just blows me away.

So, anyhoo. That's kind of an intro spiel. On to the subject at hand. This Izzy footage is amazing. Simply breath taking. I've been tweeting on the subject of Scarlet nonstop since I first saw it. Truly breathtaking. It makes Scarlet feel more tangible and I personally cannot wait for the chance to have my own. Great work to all of you guys. I'm just so excited.

Cheers,

Steve

Don't you think you can get a similar quality using your HVX when shooting a decently lit lizzard? I think you can.

Yes, the posted footage looks very good, no question. And it is great to be able to get a peek into the R&D kitchen, but I have seen similar quality using pro/pro-sumer cams like the HVX.

There's a rumor going about that this is actually Daniel Day Lewis playing Jarred's pet dog, Izzy. Awesome job guys.

Pxion, are you joking ?

Steve is talking about a canon HV20. This stuff is shooting on tapes with MPEG 2 compression. This codec is awful. If you shake your camera too much pixels are blowing like ketchup on a table.

See this music video : shot with Sony FX1+ Letus adpter so it can support still camera lenses. Watch the music video and make pause on it : you will see square forms over the pixels (a lot more in the hightlights). This is not because of the color grading or even because of the H264 codec for internet. Those awful things were right on our tape after the shooting. This is what you get when shooting MPG2.

The Sony FX1 is 3 or 4 time more expensive than the HV20, which should be used to record hollydays.

You're talking about the HVX200, which shoot on P2 cards... That's much better, I agree with you. I've seen some great footages from it...

But serioulsy, there's nothing to compare with REDCODE. I'm actually grading RED footage this week. It's like I have to re-learn how to do it. There is so much detail in black or with area.

I'm just talking about REDCODE here, not even the size of the sensor or the one of the image you get at the end (3K!).

The Scarlet 2/3 Cinema shlould be around 4000€ for a complet kit, I guess... The HVX2000 is around the same price (a little bit more).

The HVX200 is a great video camera for now... But I guess in few month, it will be just a cool toy, as Steve points it out.

Just my personal opinion Pxion, no offence.

You know, after watching it again a few times, I think it is just the way Izzy is breathing. His face moves smooth but his body stops moving then moves again.

Thank you. I was actually about to make that correction, but you beat me to it.

Julien,

Oops, I thought it was HVX, not an HV20. Your'e right, an HV20 wouldn't been able to shoot like that.

Also note that I agree that Redcode maybe leading the pack right now in many aspects and that this is an astonishing accomplishment just on its own.

My only point on the posted 'Lizzy' footage is that it is down-rezzed, compressed and displayed on a 100$ computer display (in my case at least...). This is not an ideal, nor fair way to technically judge the picture quality of a cam.

Don't you think you can get a similar quality using your HVX when shooting a decently lit lizzard? I think you can.

I think you could get close in a controlled situation like this. But i seriously doubt you could get the same image as you've seen with the dog and the bone. But again, great detail on the lizard. And as been stated, this is a heavily compressed image/clip.

Sure, you're right. We'll need to make our own tests to figure out.

But again, I rent a RED ONE for my last music video. Well, this is not a 4K$ scarlet camera, okay, but Redcode is just amazing compared to HDV compression.

That's why I'm projecting so much hope in Scarlet.
