  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jarred's pet dog... Izzy

I'm patient... somewhat, lol. Although I really do want a high quality type of feature-film digital camera by sometime in early 2010. That being said as soon as the S35 and the fixed lens scarlet are available, I'll be making the purchases.

Looks terrific. I feel like a carrot is being dangled over my head. Please release this camera soon, so I don't have to settle for a HVX with DOF adaptor. I will make a purchase soon; I'm trying to hold off.

Is there going to be a lot of carry over from MysteriumX to Monstro or does this whole process have to start again almost from scratch?

excellent question, but I fear it may tip their hand to competitors if they answer... but I trust they had the "aha moment" quite a while ago and it all fits together...

ASICS are a bitch and in someways they contradict "obsolescence obsolete" as much as they enable it.

Perhaps therein lies both the problem and the solution.

" All Delays are Divine" seems an apropos mantra, especially in this sucky market.

EDIT: EBLEIN, TEDENSTAV if you guys have been checking/trolling this site as often as it seems, did you miss the REAL NAMES section?

IF you havent been updated, just add your name in the signature line like everyone else. Or prepare to get abused.

No one wants to release the new cameras more than I do. Please consider the following:

1. It is very difficult what we are attempting to pull off. If you don't believe that, look at any other program by the biggest camera companies on the planet.

2. The market sucks. It is a terrible time to release anything.

3. We are not going to release a prototype again. When we get it right, we'll release it.

4. The new releases are based on ASICs. Very complicated ASICs. Keep your fingers crossed that they actually work. We should know pretty soon.

5. We will put the new cameras through a ton of testing before release and do most of the firmware updates with a small group before releasing production cameras.

6. If you think this is easy and we should already be shipping, dust off your checkbook and try this yourself. Just be prepared to shoot yourself in the back of the head for making that decision.

They certainly do bake things in to some degree, but I'd suggest that the finite compute power/gate count avaialbe in FPGA's do as well. As do sensor specifications. And I/O thruput. Etc...

There is no sensor/electronics package ALONE that will be upgradable so as to never be obslete ad infinitum...

Rather, RED is pushing to render "obsolescence obsolete" as an overall philosophy:

-Upgradable sensors on RED One
-Updated firmware/features for free
-Full value trade-ins for new cameras
-New designs with modular "brains" that can be swapped out for newer capability
-Previous accessories forward comaptable on new cameras for the most part
-etc...

As I see it, it's about as much as you can do given the fact that the state of the art ain't sittin still. And MORE than any other manufacturer will think about giving you...

Though ASICSs' uses are more specific, there's nothing in the performance specs of the Epic or Scarlet lineup that I'd want to change.
As long as they can hit those specs, I'll be perfectly happy and my guess is that this R&D into ASICSs now is designed to cut costs and save RED money on production in the long run, which I'm all for.

My one hope would be that each brain would allow users an option to record at a compression ratio that's below REDCODE36. Like the option of a REDCODE50 equivalent across all cameras, if we want to shoot at higher data rates.
If I had the option to shoot 4K at 50MBps, I definitely would. Hard drive space is cheap.

Is there a special "build" for the RED ONE that could "duplicate" the ASICs to test various features in the field by all those RED ONE volunteers?

How do we turn in our applications to be a part of the small group? How much money does it cost for us to be a part?

I'd rather wait for a complete product instead of a rushed release but I really hope that the market situation won't be a real consideration.

I actually think the current market is a good thing for companies with better products that are priced lower. sure, over all there will be less potential customers but I think the bottom line could still be better.

I assume that we are looking at 2010 for release then? Is it safe to say that the summer 2009 release of the s35 is out of the question?

I really hope it doesn't mean that we have to wait until 2010. Mainly because I'm worried that since RED One owners get first dibs, that would mean those of us without a RED One, who let's face it need a camera the most, lol, are not going to get one for much longer than that. I am certainly hoping to have an S35 by early 2010, anything before that would be a bonus but I'm not sure it'd be necessary for me. I will not be ready on my projects with scripts and funding until early 2010 anyway...

It'd be nice for the fixed lens camera to be out this year sometime, though, and available.

Agreed. I would like to have some sort of an idea so that I could figure out what makes the most sense for me.

I don't want to buy anything else because nothing else makes sense, financially, there just aren't any other competitive products out there. It's nice when the doubters go on about whatever else, but come on, seriously? Buy a great still camera (Canon 5D) and use it to film movies in 1080p? lol, yeah... right. Sorry but that's kind of a joke. Anyway I'm a Nikon guy, got my D90 and happy with that for my still photo needs.

So that means really only three options: 1) Buy a RED One, 2) Rent a RED One, or 3) Wait for Scarlet.

As I don't see myself having the script and financing together for the next short I want to shoot until maybe February 2010, I'm not in a huge rush here. If I shoot a short before then it will be a very simplistic one, probably another comedy but even smaller than my last, HVX200s will be fine. But my final short, I want to be an ultimate short, and it will be both expensive and technically sophisticated, I'd like it to be a test-run for the Scarlet before I think about shooting a feature with it. I wish the gap between what I have and what I want wasn't so great, because if the HVX200 shot 1080p I'd probably think it was fine for anything but a feature, but as it is I'm not really wanting to use that camera for a short I consider something that will be my calling card until the feature is done. It's very important. I'm not satisfied with HVX200 quality for that, when it's such a leap up to a Scarlet of any type. And it's nice that some people shoot features with the HVX200, but ick! The minimum I'd shoot a feature with would be the Sony F950, which by this point is a fairly old camera yet it's still too expensive, by far, about 3 times overpriced on a daily rental, so you may as well just buy or rent a RED One.

It would be sweet to have some sort of an idea when the release window might be. If they miss their original projections by three months, that isn't a big deal to me, but if it's six months late it starts to get close. Any later than that and I'd probably figure on going with a RED One.

looking at Jim's post, all of the points that he made seem to indicate that scarlet isn't coming out anytime soon. they all seem to be legitimate hurdles/issues that represent significant obstacles to the projected release dates as currently posted on Red.com.

the cameras will come out eventually. based on this post though, i certainly wouldn't be planning projects for scarlet just yet.

Damn...have to give my money to Canon now for a 5Dm2 for my trip

I'm waiting no matter what, but kind of sounds more like toward end of 2010 to me, or early 2011, hope I'm wrong tho.

I don't think RED themselves know for sure if they will be able to get Scarlet out before 2010. It sounds like they have just finished designing the ASICs and will get to test them soon. If the ASICs work as expected and don't need major redesign they may be able to hit the fall '09 target.

4. The new releases are based on ASICs. Very complicated ASICs. Keep your fingers crossed that they actually work. We should know pretty soon.
