Japan RED ONE service center

So does Hong Kong and Asian Camera get service from Japan instead of shipment to US
Will they sell RED's parts?

Wow Great that Red have picked their Service place in Toronto. Just would like to add that no research been done by red, looks like.
Cause there are other Rental and Service houses which have invested in their techs, education and introducing Red Digital System while not too many film makers and other video houses had no believes in it. Companies like PS have worked with various industry people, they opened doors to research and education of Red Digital System, RedLab, DJ Woods have also invested in the technology. Well business is business.

I like Sim too. But just so its not forgotten, P.S. has embraced the independent RED owner operators in Toronto. They have an amazing open door policy and have been quick to lend a hand. I just taught someone should say it.

I have to support what Rion is saying in this post. SIM has been great and PS has been VERY proactive in the community and the Camera department went to great lengths to have an open door policy and really go out of their way to introduce RED to the community.

I know others did this too, but it is important to acknowledge PS's contribution to the RED community here in Toronto. They did everything to educate anyone (from Production companies to insurance companies, techs, union, non-union, indy, schools) about the system and sell it to the community here. I know they are protecting their investments, but they offered up all of this for free for months on end.

I'm surprised they are not also a certified service center because they have so many talented techs (ARRI, etc.) and they have been all about FILM for a, long, long time.

I Love what PS is doing.. but you guys gotta realize I only met them at NAB a month ago.. Sim has been coming down to Red HQ since before we started shipping cameras, and they have locations in China, Canada and the US, their techs came down to RED for training more than 6 months ago to fix their own cameras, so they were the obvious choice for us to start out with.

No matter who we chose for the first company in each territory ( and yes we can only handle one pilot company per territory ) someone was bound to be upset... that's just the way it works unfortunately.

Good thing is although I have always known of PS, Now I really know them.. Penny is a sweetheart and the company seems like a great place to add to the list as soon as we work out the kinks.

Jarred, just so everyone knows I am not upset and I doubt that David is as well. I for one just wanted to give a shout out to the incredible service and help that P.S. has offered to the independent community an I hope they continue to do so. Sim Video is a fine choice for service and they are less than 20 min away and right around the corner from indoor climbing at Joe's.

I am looking forward to building a relationship with Sim.

Like I said "shipping is a bitch". :hippie:

Jarred,

Rion is right and I am not upset at all either. Thanks for the post it makes a lot of sense. I think I just wanted to point out what PS is doing and it's good to know you are forming a relationship with them too.

SIM is a logical choice for all the reasons you stated. They are very close to my place and I even own some of their gear.

I know rob sim and john deboor will take care of the red customers here in t-dot.

Hopefully PS will also be on board soon.

Hello, Red Team.

I am one of the user in Japan since there is no company that have contracted with Red company directly.
So, I have imported my red #2619 by myself with out having help by SEIKA on charge.

Now I believe SEIKA have become real Red ONE service Center in JAPAN.

It mean We, all User in Japan import there RED body by ourself also can have same service without disadvantage,is it right?

I would like to make sure that point for having happily future.

Cameras are only sold by Red, the service center in Japan is to service those cameras. If you bought your camera from Red, you should have no worries.

Thank you for reply digitalfx.

But it is not easy in our country.
We can buy RED body via SEIKA with paid Extra charge.

Jarred says,

Starting in early July they will start providing the following services to all RED ONE customers in their territory. If you have purchased your camera through Seika, you will have access to repairs early June.

1. Full Red One Camera Diagnosis and repair
2. Red One Internal Board Swaps
3. All LCD Repairs
4. In warranty and out of warranty Red One/LCD repairs

But now JULY, SEIKA will not accept my Red audio upgrade by themselves.
Because I bought from Red web store, I must send it back by myself.
I can not understand service center means...

Is there any specific deal RED and Seika had agreed for Seika to take care of RED's direct customers?

I would think this is pretty cut and dried - if Seika DI has been contracted by Red to provide service centre facilities for all Red cameras in Asia, then they would have to honour that commitment per Red's warranty terms without charge. Otherwise, what would be the point?

Kenji, I'd talk to Seika again about the upgrade since if your camera is in warranty, they should not be allowed to refuse you the upgrade locally.

And having dealt with stupid double-dipping customs rules here one too many times, this would be infinitely preferable to shipping back to the US....

Let me know how it goes. If you still have problems maybe I can help you talk to the right people to get it solved.

Cheers,

Paul

To clear up any confusion, the upgrade program is only offered in the US and UK RED facilities. Third party service centers do not offer the upgrade program. The upgrade program is a completely animal then general repair and service. It needs to go through a RED facility.

Thanks ALL

OK, I understand for about where we can do Audio upgrade.
But Why I can not send it back my body via SEIKA?
If They become one of Red service center ,I think it would be very helpful service for User in Japan.

Brent ,do you know we must pay US$800-1000 import tax every time if we send back RED Body to US. That is what Paul said stupid double-dipping customs rules in Japan.
I hope you Red company would think for our convenience.

But How about other service?
I mean Is there no difference for having service between RED's direct customers and Seika's customers in future also?

Hi,

If anyone has any questions about the services that Seika will be offering, please feel free to contact me directly (bfair-at-red-dot-com). I am more than happy to straighten out any questions you may have.

Kenji,

I do not fully understand your question. Can you please email me directly?

Thanks,
Brian

Brian and Brent, thanks both for your answers.

Brian, I think what Kenji is asking is whether he can hand his camera to Seika to send back to you for the audio board upgrade, since Seika has been doing this for cameras bought through them privately before they became an official service center. In essence, since Seika qualifies as the importer/exporter they are likely to have the right procedures in place to avoid having to pay two lots of import/consumption tax when dealing with international repairs.

For info, this is a major problem for us here in Japan thanks to stupid bureaucracy. On the first importation of a product, we pay 5% consumption tax (VAT/GST equivalent). This is fine and in line with everything bought and sold here. The problem arises when we have to send the cameras (or other items) back to the US for repairs or upgrade. As I found out the hard way via Fedex, to send something out of the country which has to come back in again, we face two choices: one is to send it via Fedex (which is Red's policy) and pay another round of 5% consumption tax all over again, because they automatically pay it as if it was a newly imported product (even though WARRANTY FOR REPAIR is stamped all over the box and documentation). The second option is to go to a customs broker who charges an exorbitant fee (around $800-1000) to clear the item for export/reimport, essentially the same amount it will cost us to ship it in as if it were new. Fedex says this special reimportation is a special clearance which they don't handle, yet they take the items to ship back to Red along with a form we have filled out stating origin and destination as being the same (Japan).

In short, it's a clusterf#$k, with no hope of changing it that I can see. The government is essentially double-dipping (or triple-dipping etc) on consumption tax. In plain English, it's government sanctioned theft/fraud, but we have no way to fight it.

That's why Kenji (and myself I guess along with many other Red owners here) is asking to hand the camera off to a Red authorised service center, in this case Seika, since they will have a special dispensation to ship these things back and forth without needing to pay the consumption tax over and over again. Since Red is no doubt footing the Fedex bill anyway, it would seem that the best policy for us here in Japan is to feed all service items that require sending back to the US through the official local service center whose job it is to deal with this at a wholesaler/licenced agent level.

So if we could be allowed to hand our Red equipment to Seika to send back (when needed, for example this audio upgrade program) that would be a major win for all of us here in Japan.

With thanks,

Paul
