  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Japan Quake 11th March 2011

Reading now that Fukushima nuclear plant is likely experiencing meltdown.

Serious business if that news is true.
 
The explosion was indeed one of the reactors outer building going kaboom and radiation is now leaking into the air. Fortunately Japanese are well aware of the threats earthquake pose, so they build the plants as safe as possible and almost exclusively on the coast with prevailing wind out to the sea - which is also this case. They have evacuated 10km radius around the plant where more reactors are still unstable. We are about 200 km from there...
 
Thought my apartment building was coming down for sure. Ottawa sounds real nice right about now :-)
 
Update on the reactor - the explosion was captured on camera and it is now shown on local TV. It was a massive blast followed by plum of smoke heading north along the coastline straight towards Sendai (the closest large city to the epicenter of the quake), which is less then 100 km away. Like they have not been through enough already...
 
I am ready to go and help right away if I have a chance or my government sends someone

I love this country so much.

Just heard about this. A real shocker! Especially as I was planning a trip to Japan this summer!!
All the best wishes to the people of Japan and all hopes on this tragedy getting a happy ending soon!

What kind of happy ending do you expect from a tragedy?

Makes you wonder if there is any connection between the earthquakes and those millions of sardines that suddenly crammed themselves into that Redondo Beach marina and suffocated themselves.

Do fish often do that sort of thing over there?
 
As many of you know, I was on the coast of Chile right by the epicenter on February 27, 2010 for the monster 8.8 quake and multiple tsunamis. That quake was basically as powerful as this Japan quake, and the first tsunami (estimated at 33' or 10 meters) got to the part of the coast where we were with 5 minutes of when the shaking stopped. We barely survived the quake and that first tsunami, just in time to nearly get killed by a huge landslide of boulders and trees as we scrambled into the coastal foothills. Seven more tsunamis followed - three of which were estimated by experts to be over 60' (20 meters) high. A whole week of strong aftershocks followed.

The greatest loss of life in Chile was in a small town just south of where we were sleeping on the beach. In that town several hundred people drowned in that first tsunami we just escaped by seconds. One other really freaky fact - the earthquake in Chile hit in the middle of the night (3:27am), and the first three giant tsunamis hit before daylight. Now that you've seen the terrifying images from Japan, where the disaster hit during afternoon daylight, imagine being right on the coast by the epicenter in Chile, then experiencing the same size earthquake and even bigger tsunamis in the pitch darkness of night! The sheer terror of that night is indescribable - and keep in mind I am a full tour (1 year) Viet Nam war veteran, so I have deep knowledge of what life-threatening terror feels like. You really don't want to know what experiencing a giant quake and running from huge tsunamis feels like...

When daylight arrived, the devastation was shocking and appalling. In short, it looked like what you've been seeing in the Japanese disaster photos and video. Its impossible to describe the annihilation...it was simply stunning.

Having barely survived the Chile earthquake basically as powerful as that in Japan, which shook for as long, and spawned tsunamis twice as large as Japan, I can fully empathize with the plight of the Japanese people in this disaster. My thoughts, best wishes, and prayers go out for them, and will continue to.

Last thoughts:
Nobody who lost their lives in the Chile or Japan disasters knew that day or night would be their last one alive. This adds a whole new dimension to the proverb "Live each day as if its your last - and someday you'll be right". My suggestion to all of you is to embrace each day with great thankfulness, respect, and personal commitment. Don't take anything or anyone for granted - you or they could very well be gone tomorrow. I know...

Where's the damn like button when you need it? :furious3:
Everything this man said times a thousand. Seeing this kind of furor released on a place which (in my mind) always has been considered 'safe' really puts things in perspective; nothing is ever sure, make sure to make something out of it. I just hope my friends and loved ones over there make it out and live to learn from it - as I hope for anyone that has people over there.
Can't imagine how it must feel to be in the middle of something like that (not even close!) but I sympathize nonetheless.

I can tell you Erik it rough!
I'm in the states at the moment working on some projects when I got the news of the quake. My Wife and I live in Japan and its been hell the last two days, thank goodness for Skype. Like Brent & Kelly we are expecting our first child in September so I have the extra added stress. One thing I can say about Reduser.com it's like a family not only did I get messages from fellow users in Japan I even got a call from Ron at Maxx Digital checking to see if my wife was okay and a few other RedUsers. I may not post much (like to keep the noise down) on the forum even though I been around forever it's always great to read threads like this. I was hoping to stay in the states till NAB and meet a lot of you fellow users but depending on what happens in the next few days/weeks I may have to head back to Japan. Anyway thanks for the kind words from everyone its helps my wife is safe and sound just a things like books and stuff fell of the shelfs but no serious damage.

But I did agree with Gibby tomorrow is not promise to anyone so enjoy life everyday.

Sort of global size of catastrophe is probably underway and more human casualties can even grow maybe with a higher numbers just right after this news:
