  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jannard...

Well I have to say I liked the posted article!...

The Business model is very similar to our own in terms of thinking but at a much smaller scale (of course). So for some of the paragraphs you could replace the word “cars” with the word RED cameras.

It could even be a mission statement for RED (read it…)

So the first paragraph would read…

…Premium “RED cameras” have a higher re-sale value, stronger brand loyalty and bigger profit margins than mass produced “cameras”. This in turn enables the premium (RED camera) maker to spend more on research and development to make better, more advanced “RED cameras” with a powerful [RED] brand image.
…
One paragraph would condense to basically say the RED business model actually fosters greater expenditure on R&D than a larger company like General motors (read Canon) with a zillion broad (not very distinguished products) (proportionally).

It’s a clear case that praise will be well taken from Jarred by Jim as there is of course a high degree of mutual respect.... The picture that you paint (is) imporant it seems (thank you...)

The fact that Jarred says Jim is incredibly humble… has real meaning…and is believable.

I sense a new “red-culture” seems to want to emerge…(perhaps).

All good,

Eric

I know it's still all one brand, but wildly diverse: Richard Branson. I loved his biography. To go from music to an airline is a pretty big jump. To me, from afar, Jim has always reminded me more of Branson than Job, Ted Turner or anyone else.

Can't wait to see what his 3rd company is. ;-) You have one more in you, Jim?

Now, I greatly admire Richard Branson as well. But his business model is entirely different from Jim. He hatches an idea, hires good people to make it work, and leaves them mainly alone. He is not involved in the detailed operation of his hundreds (!) of companies. He can't be, by definition. So he does not sweat the details of product design like Jim. Jim's strength is that he cares deeply about his creations, and they are his creations. That's totally different from Branson.

I think Jim really, really, really loves cameras, so I have a feeling there's no third company and we're stuck with him. I hope this is true, anyway :).

D

Jim, with a very evil smirk, dared me to drive it home a few weeks ago. I did.

For sure the most insane vehicle I have ever driven.

As awesome as it is, it still needs a machine-gun turret on top. I would also want rocket launchers, you know, because sometimes people don't pull over...

It really struck me when Steve Jobs died. I loved the guy and everything he stood for. The good and the bad.
He had a big influence on me, on all of us wether we admit it or not

Thanks
Tim

same with me, I love the fact he wanted to spend the last cent of apple to destroy android, I love how bad he treated his colleagues, how he ripped off friends and all the other bad things...

[sarcasm off]

I was going through some old articles in the office tonight and came across a Forbes article.. one of many that Jim has been in.. and it dawned on me.

There has only been one person in history who has started two separate world brands completely from scratch.

I'm not talking about buying companies ( like Jobs buying Pixar ) .. I am talking about starting from ground zero.

Think about that for a second.

It is pretty incredible... and I pinch myself how fortunate I am sitting beside this man everyday... learning his wisdom, witnessing his passion... sharing in his Vision.

O.K.. i gotta go hide now. Jim is gonna come kick my ass when he reads this..

I hate looking like a fanboy....
but you are so right Jarred...

I was looking at a Forbes list of billionaires the other day....and there is a lot of guys that made empires from one thing....or inherited money....
Very few that pulled off hugely successful ventures in totally different fields....MULTIPLE TIMES.....

Kinda reminds me of Howard Hughes.....minus the insanity...

oh btw....love how Forbes list's his education as "drop out"......not sure how many other billionaires have that on there CV

What's the secret to Jim's success? I've known him since 1983, and my answers to that question would be:

1) Uncanny foresight that reaches across any industry he decides to tackle - he observes what is, but sees clearly beyond that to all possibilities.
2) A deep seated sense of fairness - he creates win/win situations for everyone he associates with.
3) Great team building (and team maintaining) skills - critical qualities for a chief executive.
4) A huge amount of passion for whatever he does.
5) A giant heart - he helps anyone he can whenever he can.
6) A brilliant mind that just never seems to stop.
7) Amid all his busy schedules he regularly takes time out for family and friends.
8) He teaches people how to help themselves (gives them opportunities), rather than just hand them things.
9) He has deep reserves of tenacity and perseverance.
10) Lastly, and most important, Jim is a really good person through and through - and that governs both his personal life and his business life.

I hope this insight from someone who has known Jim all these years will help each of you understand what a unique man Jim is. He is truly one of a kind - and my life has been greatly enhanced by knowing him.

Haha. Badass Jarred, if that's what I think it is - I visited their facilities in Toronto 2 years ago: http://conquestvehicles.com/knight-xv.html

from inside the newest addition to Stage 4 at the studio... and probably where I am going to sleep tonight :)

The 2nd time was RED.. yes his wallet was a bit fatter.. but it was all his money. His retirement money. He put it all on the table to take an even bigger gamble on his vision.

And here we all are..

In 2006 I saw this project and one guy behind it choosing this path because it was his dream.
While some choose spending $ on custom made fleet of ocean liners for a summer vacation.

Never once it seemed as gamble and never once there was one worry about the deposit.

Well, I think you could give Jobs credit for creating the Pixar brand, seeing that it had no meaning as a brand when he took it over :).

But never has a company loved and pampered its customers as much as RED has. And quite honestly I think that's what Jim is proudest of.

Oh, what is that giant military-style vehicle? Is it some other country's version of a Hummer?

D

Don't know, but +1 from me to, it is rather impressive.
Jim, or Steve, are great in their own right despite the others involved. We are what we are.

Thanks for this thread Jarred, nice to see Jim get some recognition from those closest to him.

One thing that also strikes me, having just read Steve Jobs' bio (who I'm a huge, huge fan of as well), is also that Jim seems to get the best out of people on his team without berating them and generally being positive and encouraging.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Jim can and does kick some ass when necessary and has fired his share of people, but overall I get the impression he's awesome to work with/for and you guys are having a blast, even while working your ass off. When someone is that brilliant, that successful and that driven ... AND they're a joy to work with, that counts for a lot in my book.

Sometimes you are just overcome with the urge to create and share something special. Jim is one of those people, and everyone at Red who shares that same inspiration has touched thousands of lives, and left them better for it. In my opinion there's no better thing you can do. I tip my hat to you gentlemen, as I march boldly in the same direction, in my own ways.

(snip) He is now starting a second company based on his leading processing design that could be made to do all the processing of an Epic very cheaply and low powered.

I've actually been doing some embedded development work with Chuck's new chips, and one of the first things I thought of was "gee, Red should talk to these guys". They've got some serious outside the box mojo to crank massive data through with miniscule power use. I'm working on some nifty devices for Red equipment using this tech...

Gosgh you guys seem on fire :) I have been lurking here on these forums since the very very beginning and I have never seen such a high spirit even with the RED One release or the Epic announcement - whatever you will announce it seems to put a big smile in your face. I guess it will put a smile in the face of lots of other too then :) - gosh now I sound like the fanboy I don´t want to be - but this good mood is really addictive...

Jarred, is that a Land Rover Defender base or something completely custom? You guys may have to improve your eco image after posting that.

Land Rover Defender? LOL.
You can park a Land Rover Defender on the back seat of this vehicle!
If you have a size comparison between a Hummer and a Land Rover Defender in your mind, then take a look how the Hummer looks versus that "Matchbox car":

Good thread, and sooo off-topic. The best preparation before November 3rd, focussing on other toys :)

Cheers,
Axel

I saw this great inspirational video today and it made me think of Jim and Jarred and their habits... If you have 5 minutes, I highly recommend watching this great video.
