  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jannard...

Jim, with a very evil smirk, dared me to drive it home a few weeks ago. I did.

For sure the most insane vehicle I have ever driven.

Can't see shit.

Weighs 17000 pounds, plus 2000 more of mud and sand that Jim managed to cake on driving it through ocean quicksand ( another story ) .

2" thick bulletproof Doors weigh 1000 pounds each and are just waiting for you to not pay attention and chop of a finger. or arm. or leg.

Can't see shit.

Takes 2 blocks for the brakes to stop it.

Can't see shit.

Good thing that everyone that saw me coming pulled over... on both sides of the road.

that 8 minute drive felt like it took 2 hours :)
Jarred, I really, really, need to borrow that for my movie. Some of the scenes require a mode of transportation over Badlands type of terrain. I think this one would fill the audience's need for plausibility.

I'm not sure how it is done, but I would like to officially put forth a movement here for Jim Jannard for Technical Oscar for the RED ONE Camera system (And family of Cameras). This year, Mr. Jannard should be recognized by the industry. Whether or not he chooses to accept such an award is no important.

This is a great idea.. No idea how to make that happen. Maybe you guys out there can put in a good word :)

Hmm... my only contact is our Oscar Loser™ friend Ruairi - I think they prefer to hear from Oscar Winners™ instead. Plus he's still busy wiping the blood off of that robot...

Great post though, man! Yay!

And yes - I saw that crazy vehicle parked outside and wondered what the hell it was. Thank you for the amusing story about driving it home :)

I was going through some old articles in the office tonight and came across a Forbes article.. one of many that Jim has been in.. and it dawned on me.

There has only been one person in history who has started two separate world brands completely from scratch.

I'm not talking about buying companies ( like Jobs buying Pixar ) .. I am talking about starting from ground zero.

Think about that for a second.

It is pretty incredible... and I pinch myself how fortunate I am sitting beside this man everyday... learning his wisdom, witnessing his passion... sharing in his Vision.

O.K.. i gotta go hide now. Jim is gonna come kick my ass when he reads this..

Red is Jim's Nextstep, which was revolutionary in it's time.

"O.K.. i gotta go hide now. Jim is gonna come kick my ass when he reads this.."

Mr. J is indeed larger than life. We are all blessed by his vision and tenacity. But even he might need to stand on a chair to kick your ass.

This is a great idea.. No idea how to make that happen. Maybe you guys out there can put in a good word :)

Best way is to make a movie that wins an Oscar for best picture and best cinematography.

My favourite thread to date on Red User.......

What I want to know is whose idea was it to make the Oakley pouch/bag thingy, be the lens wipe too?

How about this for balls. Jim started both companies with his own money in his back pocket.

The 1st time was Oakley with his last $300 in his wallet, no job, and a pregnant wife at home.

The 2nd time was RED.. yes his wallet was a bit fatter.. but it was all his money. His retirement money. He put it all on the table to take an even bigger gamble on his vision.

And here we all are..

You know what the crazy thing is... and I can tell you from being so close to him.. it feels like he is just getting started.

These explains who and what he is today, a humble smart guy that everyone here would like to imitate.

Heh heh.., I only take the napkins and hot sauce home that we thought we would use!

Jarred... you are so dead.

Jim

They're great for picnics! Even billionaires like a picnic

Elon Musk

He, he. You could maybe find a few of revolutionary significance, and less so now days among cheap chineese manufacturers, but the simple truth is most people wrap new products and companies up under the existing company and brand, and their are many.

I'll take a stab, don't track these things so know very few possible examples, and some other great men I'll mention.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clive_Sinclair Nice fellow to communicate with.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nolan_Bushnell I lucked out on Nolan, chuck'e' cheese might not count as an international brand.

Others that could have or can:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Tramiel. Surprised to see Jack still going, strong I guess.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Moore. My favorite (and Sir Clive of course). We are in the same circle, he is the circle basically. Internationally renouned computer language and leading microprocessor designer. History has not been too kind, he invented then started Forth industries, a previously commonly used language for embedded computer programming, used on a number of Nasa probes, satellites,, the shuttle, the original Apple Macintosh (should talk about Apple cofounder Steve Wozinak who designed the computers , these are the types of real men that develop things that change the world humbly behind the scenes). He is now starting a second company based on his leading processing design that could be made to do all the processing of an Epic very cheaply and low powered (Forth also has some amazing programmers) in small space compared to fpga solution, in a fraction of the development time with the right team, as I I don't know, depends if somebody as good as him designed it). Hopefullythe company, greenarraychips will become an industry brand.

It is amazing that all these guys from the home computer etc industry narevstill around, I have been planning to do a new generation of home computers based on my third world computer platform. You know, if you had the money, you could gather them all up for one last hoorah on the board, with Allan there to chew on the competition , would be some truly great direction and wisdom from these guys. I originally was going to approach Clive when ready, but this is so interesting a prospect.

Even more legendary people like my friend Eric, ex special forces, was one of the cofounders of the Vietnam veterans association, social wirker that successfully fostered 26 kids, helped lots of people quietly behind the scenes, successful businessman and race car driver, I salute him, now passed. My freindHarold to a lesser degree, award body builder, helped a lot of people that did not help him much, ex-cancer survivor. And a few others. It is not about being liked, rich and famouse, successful in public, it is about helping others. Steve Jobs co-founded Apple, and left and started Next step, but he knew what to do, to have the right people behind him working for him doing what he could not , to make him a success. These people are the people that changed things, and for the better, humbly working behind the scenes for meager wages, as is so often in life. Jim also ascribes to this, he unhitches his horse and says to them "You want to go for a ride!" and gallops off like a mad man with them on the back into the distance.

It really struck me when Steve Jobs died. I loved the guy and everything he stood for. The good and the bad.
He had a big influence on me, on all of us wether we admit it or not.

Now I realize, that Jim and yes you Jarred too, have a far far bigger impact on my life than any thing else in this world till today (ok my parents and daughter are rockstars too).
You changed the way I shoot, the way I think a bit, you changed my whole business for the better. This is huge. No other Apple product ever did this to me, none.
As much as I love Steve and he is seen as one of the greatest minds ever, in my world Jim and the gang mean much more to me than all the other great leaders combined. This is huge. This is scary at the same time. This is remarkable for a team that didn't exist only a few years ago. This shows who you are.

It's an honor to hang out with you every single day. This is my life, this is why I love it.

Thanks
Tim

Jim doesn't get a lot of play in the mainstream media (and I assume he likes it that way) as say a Steve Jobs does, but I have noticed similar themes through what I have read on both.

Both very design focused, and not willing to let things out the door until they feel that they are ready. In the early days, they both had a drive to take the risk of being homeless to create an innovative product.

They didn't stop creating despite the fact that they had more money than they would ever need; both were still hungry to innovate. They both appear to have their willing partners in crime [design]. Jon Ive with Jobs, Tinker Hatfield at Nike, and Jarred (plus others I am sure) with Jim.

Jobs and Jannard are both pretty secretive dudes, but to each his own. If that means they are in the lab creating mad science well can't blame them for not wanting to be out in the public eye; it is a lot of work that would limit their tinkering time.

If you have an iphone and pair of Oakleys then you know how kick ass products these guys came up with. I have multiple pairs of Oakleys, will likely make my second Iphone purchase this year, and hope it is in the cards to add a Scarlet to my tool chest. I have yet to be disappointed with any of them.

Hopefully Jobs drive for perfection will live on in Apple's culture. Fortunately for us, Red seems to just be hitting its stride to the benefit of us all!

Jim if you are reading this, please think about cutting down on the cigars. The Red Army needs their General so you can all keep doing your thing.

Well, I think you could give Jobs credit for creating the Pixar brand, seeing that it had no meaning as a brand when he took it over :).

But never has a company loved and pampered its customers as much as RED has. And quite honestly I think that's what Jim is proudest of.

Oh, what is that giant military-style vehicle? Is it some other country's version of a Hummer?

D

I pinch myself how fortunate I am sitting beside this man everyday... learning his wisdom, witnessing his passion... sharing in his Vision.

maybe not the same scale...but I feel exactly the same way about all of you. the ringside seat to watching Jim and the rest of the RED team building this business has been an awesome privilege. truly, a life-altering experience in ways too numerous to describe.

heh, and the cameras aren't so bad, either!

Seriously a kick ass post. It is SUPER impressive and truly inspirational that you've been able to do this Jim.

Now...my turn ;)

Kegan

Heh heh.. great men.. but still don't beat Jim. One guy founded a great first company then a bunch of small companies ( not brands ) .

...and Alan Sugar was definitely more "used car salesman" than brand leader / developer.

This is a great idea.. No idea how to make that happen. Maybe you guys out there can put in a good word :)

Looked into it and the application process has closed for this year. Apparently it will open up at the end of May 2012 - so I guess we should all do this if that's the general consensus for. In the diary for followup!

:-)

I know it's still all one brand, but wildly diverse: Richard Branson. I loved his biography. To go from music to an airline is a pretty big jump. To me, from afar, Jim has always reminded me more of Branson than Job, Ted Turner or anyone else.

Can't wait to see what his 3rd company is. ;-) You have one more in you, Jim?
