  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Its official - Black Magic 4k Cinema Camera

It could be an A cam on indie productions where buying gear at this price point outweighs rental. Other than that I don´t see anyone put up with the ergonomics of this camera.

How you heard of the movi

So When is RED is suing Black Magic for compressed 4K super 35mm global shutter camera?

LOL.

Where does this leave Red lawsuit at F5, F55 and F65?

Cinema DNG is freeware and existed on Si2k long B4 Red was born. Besides by the Lawsuit Red has just increased Sony's sales by a really high Margin. Same way it did for Arri. Consumers see value in argumentative acknowledgment. As much as there was buzz about the F5 and F55, no true professionals really payed it much attention beyond the occasional glimpse. Why do you think Sony boldly published the lawsuit on their site? Now you can look everywhere on the webosphere everybody is talking about F5, F55. Adobe, FCPX etc are opening the files natively.
Suing Blackmagic will be a complete waste of time. Look at what happened to light panels, Now everyone orders their lights directly from China.

EDIT: After discussing the issue a bit, I realized Red does have the right to sue them, even though compressed 4k existed B4 RED. Simply put Red has the patent. It is no wonder that Arri has stayed off the 4k reservation. Rumors are they have an Arri 8k camera in the field with insane DR, I wonder if they'll release it as a 3.5K Arri Raw cam leaving users to do the upscaling themselves, like with the current Alexa. These are rumors.

Glad my early info didn't bite me in the ass ;)

Very cool we could get a visual confirmation too! I tried getting my buddy to sneak a photograph but they were super strict about it...so how did the photos surface? :)

trust in me next time, you should (yoda voice)

Well, if it is the cmosis, it will be between 90 and 150FPS at full rez.

Additionally, its base dynamica range is at 13 stops, with extended dynamic range much higher. I have no idea how extended dynamic range works and at what cost, but fow what its worth...

The old BMCC used a Fairchild sensor. The 4K one looks like the new CMOSIS sensor.

So yes, completely different sensor provider.

CMOSIS did a new sensor for Leica so they hopefully know what they are doing. This CMOSIS sensor is also going into a whole bunch of machine vision cams as well (some with very high frame rates). They do cost more - like $7000 though.

I wonder what the dynamic range, fps and color will be like? Apertus is also talking about making a camera using that sensor and it has good DR specs... but we'll see what it's like in practice!

If you jumped in a time machine and delivered it to George Lucas he'd have shot Star Wars I on it, I'd bet.

And now available (well, cross fingers) at a 'prosumer' cost.

Depends on which sensor, high speed one is 10 bit ADC 60dB, 30p sensor is 12 bit ADC 66 dB.

I just preordered the Pocket Cinema Camera. Not sure how many years until I hold it in my hands though...

Hrvoje - perhaps you can explain to us what this means in terms of dynamic range in stops! I have been trying to work this out.

EDIT: Also, wht does cmosis mean by extended dynamic range mode?

Reality

Reality

Guys,

Take a deep breath and step back a bit.

Until we know what any of the new cameras actually produce it's nonsense to talk about dramatic changes.

Lets test the shit out of all the new cameras, look at the results and then get excited.

It's also part of the reality that the cost of the camera body is a tiny part of the total cost of ownership.

How's the backup? will you need to own multiple cameras to allow for slow repairs?

There's a saying in the north of England that seems appropriate "you don't get owt for nowt"

Or for those of you 60's SF freaks TANSTAAFL....
